DIY: Magazine Bowl

October 14th, 2010 @ 8:36 am by Mrs. Giraffe

So this is not (really) wedding related (NWR), but I’m sure some crafty, kitschy bride out there could make this wedding related somehow. And if she can’t? Well, it’s still really frigging cool. Withour futher ado, the magazine bowl! It’s easy—just time consuming!

Gather your materials! Some old magazines, glue, Mod Podge (or other decoupage glue), a foam brush for decoupaging (not pictured), clear spray sealer (optional), and a bone folder (optional).

DIY: Magazine Bowl : wedding chicago decor diy Dsc005005 Step 1: Tear out all the pages from your magazine. Hello, reduce, reuse, recycle!

Step 2: Fold the pages diagonally.

I find that it works easier if I use my bone folder after I fold to make the creases better. It flattens out the magazine quite nicely!

DIY: Magazine Bowl : wedding chicago decor diy Dsc005008 Do this over and over and over again until you have a whole lot of little magazine folds!

DIY: Magazine Bowl : wedding chicago decor diy Dsc005009 Step 4: Glue your magazine folds together, end to end. (I did this a little bit as I went because it’s easier to deal with a few glued together than a whole bunch.

Step 5: Starting with one end, start rolling the magazine folds around each other. I found it helps to use a rubber band to hold your roll together while you’re busy folding more magazine folds!

Then keep adding on more folds and keep rolling them around themselves. Keep going until you have a “magazine roll up” that is the desired diameter of the bowl you want.

Step 7: Using a foam brush, coat the inside, outside, and bottom of your bowl with Mod Podge!

Step 8: - Optional - Spray with a coat of acrylic sealer. I chose “gloss” sealer to match the glossy Mod Podge.

And surprise! Now you have your very own magazine bowl! (I promise it looks better in real life than it does in this photo.)

The best part about magazine bowls, you ask? Looking down at the inside. Fantastic!

How would you use something like this in your wedding?

That looks like fun!!! I might put mints or bubble sticks in them. Maybe small flowers, I wouldn’t want anything covering up that hard work!!!

That could totally work as wedding decor! I’m using a bunch of de-constructed books, and if I was going for a more modern vibe it could work. Black and white text bowl with a pop of color, maybe fill it with citrus? (ok, I’ve had a lot of coffee…)

I suppose you could paint the outside, too, if you wanted it to match other decor. I would still leave the inside untouched, though. I love the look!

Make them as favors and clear out all the wedding magazines you have lying around the house! cleaning, recycling, and favor making all in one.

I like Ms. Moonlight’s idea of painting the outside and RobynB’s idea of putting mints or candies in it. I had been thinking about using baskets…but now, I could get rid of my magazine pile and get containers. Thank you, Miss Giraffe!

I wonder if you could either use newspaper of control the color of the pages you use to get a black and white bowl. Our colors are black and white with pops of green. I think that’d be super cute to have sitting around with random things or in the bathrooms with cologne/ perfume, hand lotions, tampons ect for the guests with emergencies.

How thick of a magazine should I use? Like Vogue thick or will Entertainment Weekly (my mag) work? I bought a couple little ones in Bangladesh for hair clips, but now that I can make them, I’m going to use them for bigger things, and hope they will appear at our wedding.

@Mrs. Stripes: I wanted to make a giant one too, but it was taking way too long so it ended up medium sized hehe.
@Mrs. Furry: I haven’t tried newspaper, but I bet it would look awesome! I love newsprint!
@Queen2bee: I’ve used both kinds of magazines, but found that my Entertainment weeklys were easier to use because the thinner paper would lay more flat when folded.

A big light bulb just lit above my head. I’m thinking of using aviation magazines to make a little wedding present for my hubby-to-be.

OMG the inside of that bowl is a trip. When I have more time on my hands I’ll definitely give this a try!
