My Latest Dress Obsession

October 14th, 2010 @ 11:33 am by Ms. Sloth

I’d narrowed it down to two. It was between the Aria…

My Latest Dress Obsession : wedding philadelphia wedding dress Aria 1 aria_1

…and the Jenny Yoo.

My Latest Dress Obsession : wedding philadelphia wedding dress Margaux Bridal Xl Margaux-bridal-xl

And then I found two more dresses and fell in love. Introducing the Watters Austin…

My Latest Dress Obsession : wedding philadelphia wedding dress Austin austin

…and the Amsale Tyler.

My Latest Dress Obsession : wedding philadelphia wedding dress Amsale amsale

I think either one would work on me. The sweetheart bustline is by far the most flattering I’ve tried on. And I love the sash and flowers. (I think I’d like a matching sash like the Watters and smaller flowers like the Tyler.)

The problem is, though, they are both way out of my budget. I don’t want to spend more than $1000. The Watters dress is double that, and the Amsale dress is about four times that! No can do. Sob.

But then I had an idea: I could commission a custom dress, inspired by the Watters and Amsale dresses. I could find a local dressmaker, or maybe go with an Etsy seller with high feedback. The idea of it scares me—what if I get it and it’s not well made? Or what if it is well made but just doesn’t look good on my body? But the price might be right, so I might go for it.

Would you consider getting a custom dress made?

I think the aria is perfect for you! after following you on the blogs and the forums, I could totally see you in that dress and punching it up with your accessories (or a sash if you feel like it) but just that dress and statement necklace on you and you would kill it IMO

I think the Aria is gorgeous! You could always get a fabulous flower sash from Etsy and that would bring down some of the cost.

I was going to have an Etsy seller make a dress similiar to my dream dress too! I wound up findind a dress at ROTB so I didn’t need to in the end but I was ready to do it. There are quite a few dress makers that have good reviews from bees who have used them. I think it’s a great idea!

I got a dress from an Etsy seller and wouldn’t recommend it. The dress was nothing like what I wanted. I think it had a lot do do with the girl who made my dress but she had all good feedback and the dresses she had for sale were amazing. I also didn’t leave negative feedback I just didn’t leave feedback at all.

I would however get a dress made from someone locally. Or go with someone who would actually go in person and look at the dress.

I am getting a custom dress made. One of my best friends from college is a textile artist and clothing designer, and she is designing and making it for me. I’m paying her $1000, including materials. I expect it will be AMAZING. But it is a little nervewracking, since there won’t really be anything to try on until she does the muslin mock-up. But I know her level of talent and skill, and she made a stunning wedding dress for another mutual friend. That dress was not only beautiful, it perfectly suited the bride - both her figure and her personality. I’m hoping mine will do the same! We’ve designed the front and now I’m waiting for sketches of possibilities for the back of the dress.

Aria. I wish I’d known about them before I picked my dress - it’s classic, customizable, and perfect. Go with the Aria!

oooooooh! Watters Austin is like, my dream dress! I love it. I was so sad when I realized I couldn’t afford it.

My sister had her dress custom made when she got married, she loved how it turned out. I don’t know if I could do it though. I would worry constantly that it wasn’t going to look good.

I tried that Amsale dress on two weeks ago, and at least in my opinion, it isn’t nearly as magical as it seems (or should be for the price!). I think the Aria and Jenny Yoo dresses are both beautiful - I don’t think you need to seek out a dressmaker. I’d have some qualms about having something custom-made like that. Go with the dress that makes you feel the most like the woman you dream about feeling like on your wedding day. If I may throw in my two cents, I think since you seem drawn to the sash look, I’d lean toward the Jenny Yoo - it seems like the more photogenic choice as well, like you’d have more angles and lightness to play with. It’s the more “fashion” choice. But the Aria is also cut really beautifully and seems like it would flatter in all the right ways… I guess I’m not helping. Just follow your heart, fellow bride. Looking forward to hearing more about your dress decision!

I’m also OBSESSED with the Watters Austin dress - but can’t afford it. Keep your eye out for re-sales or sample sales though!

I’d be afraid to buy a dress I hadn’t tried on, personally.
I can’t wait to see what dress you end up with!

I like all Watters dresses. The Austin is a great dress. Awesome material. I would not get a dress made. You might not like it and then you are out that money! Pick out the perfect dress then google it. You may find it on a website that you didn’t know about. Have it on your body then decide what to do about the flowers. They may not be a big deal once you see the dress on. Some alterations personal can cut down flowers if you really want it done. I would not worry about the flowers, just hte quality and material of the dress! You will look great!

How about adding a sash to the Aria dress? Mrs. Cowboy Boot had a realy pretty flowered J. Crew I think sash.

Did you consider this dress? http://www.davidsbridal.com/Product_Ball-Gown-Featuring-3D-Floral-Details-CWG322_Bridal-Gowns-Features-Designer-Gowns-Oleg-Cassini

It’s similar shape and style, and maybe you can take some of the blingy things off. Also you get to try it on and it’s well under your budget.

I love the Aria dress! I never really considered custom dresses because I just accepted the fact that the more couture dresses I liked were out of my price range. Also I don’t know if I could handle the stress of wondering how it will all turn out.

@SoupyCat: I actually tried that dress on - unfortunately, it didn’t really work for my bod.

I’m pretty sure that’s the dress Mrs. Thimble wore, though!
