Ms Seahorse's Picture
Ms Seahorse, Boston Age and Occupation: 25, Veterinary Jane-of-all-trades Fiancee's Age and Occupation: 36, former non-profit fundraiser in search of something better Engagement Date: October 17, 2009 Wedding Date: September 2010 Venue: Fort Pond Lodge About Me: By day I'm a cat-wrangler, vet tech assistant, pet-sitter, receptionist, and pre-vet student, but the rest of the time, I'm a former-roller-derby girl turned dedicated-wedding planner. I love reading, writing, bicycles, animals, roller skating, and antique-y things of all sorts. I'm a vegetarian who likes spicy foods, while Fiancee Seahorse is a meat eater who does not like spices. We live outside Boston with our menagerie: a fifty pound dog, a one-eyed, seventeen-toed, toothless cat, and a perfectly put together cat who has a penchant for pooping near rather than in her litter box. In addition to planning our small lake-side wedding, we enjoy running around with the puppy, playing board games (Scrabble, anyone?), having little adventures, talking about how we should really clean the house more, and maintaining our little garden of vegetables and wedding flowers.
About Ms Seahorse

A lot of the time, Fancee and I really collaborated on this whole wedding thing. We took details and discussed them together and then figured out which one of us would  be in charge of really carrying the whole thing out. Other times, it was really one of us that was thinking we’d do just that, and instead the conversation went like this:

Me: Do you want to get ready separately so we can have a first look?

Fancee: Sure.

Me: “Sure”? That’s it?

Fancee: Sure.

The decision about which wine to use for 1. champagne toasts and 2. mimosa was definitely collaborative.

I’ve already talked about the awesomeness of our flowers, but have I raved enough about the rest of our vendors? Oh, yes, we loved all of them. Like whoa. Vendor of the day to rave about: our champagne providers—our local wine & beer shop. Our town was a dry town until just a few years ago, and we have one wine & beer store that we love (still no hard liquor for sale here). They have a free beer tasting every Friday and free wine tasting every Saturday, so we spend a bit of time there every week. When we asked about getting champagne from them, they offered us 20% off, and the opportunity to return whatever we didn’t use.

So we bought some samples and headed home to test them out.

I’m pretty sure that Miss Octopus referred to us as “elfin” at one point, and that should give you an idea of how well we can handle our liquor. So… things got pretty fun, pretty fast.

we started with three innocent-looking bottles of champagne

I poured a bit into each cup and labeled the bottoms so we could find out which was which at the end…

we got a little crazy with our palate-cleansing crackers

Wedding wine should make you feel sexy. And bridal. Which is obviously how I’m feeling here.

In the end, we agreed on which one we didn’t like, but her number 2 was my number 1, and my number 1 was her number 2… so we ended up buying half and half of both of what we liked! Interestingly, this was the same evening that we finally worked on our budget together… a few glasses of champagne made us both a little more willing to tackle the hard things. All in all, a success.

How did you and your partner figure out which decisions to make together? Did one of you tend to lead the way, and was that what you expected? Do you like how I’m out of interesting things to say about marriage so instead you get pictures of us getting tipsy on ridiculously small amounts of wine?

A dry town?!? I would die (because I drink like a fish)! This looks like a lot of fun, me and Mr. G need to do this for our wine and champagne because I keep going “Can’t we have the pink Franzia in a box?” and Mr. G keeps shouting “NO!” I’m just a boxed wine type of gal! So, what did you wind up going with? Perhaps we can just steal your idea!

@Miss Glasses: We had boxed wine at our wedding. But no one knew about it because we provided clear cups for the bartender to pour into :)

Seahorse, did you wind up doing the first look? If so do you think it was any less thrilling since you’d alread seen each others’ wedding duds?

@kandaceandjason: We did do a first look, and it was perfect… neither of us had seen each other all gussied up (you know, we’d seen the dress here and the hair flower there…but none of it all together) and I admit I was pretty teary/thrilled!

The night FH and I got engaged we went back to the cottage we were staying at and broke out the champagne. Combining that with the rush of being engaged gave us our best wedding planning conversation/decision making time. A little early? Maybe. But it’s one of my favorite memories. Him slightly intoxicated giving his best answers to questions about things like flowers, locations, groomsmen, and dancing. So yes, a little bubbly helped us have some good wedding covo.

P.S. Ask him now without the bubbly and the answers are more along the lines of “sure” :-)
