Mrs. Giraffe's Picture
Mrs. Giraffe, Chicago Age and Occupation: 23, Graphic Designer Fiance's Age and Occupation: 24, Music Student Teacher Engagement Date: October 23, 2008 Wedding Date: May 2011 Venue: Trinity Lutheran Church & Idlewild Country Club About Me: Coming from the suburbs of the Windy City, you'll often find me with my foot in my mouth while laughing for no reason or telling bad knock knock jokes. I've been crafty for as long as I can remember, and will DIY something twice over before I have someone do it for me. I'm a semi-awkward, typeface obsessed, design junkie and have been know to break out my dance moves for no reason as well as try my best to be ridiculous at all times. My love of pop culture, wordplay, and graph paper almost rivals my love of Mr. Giraffe (who is just the bee's knees). After a 2.5 year engagement, we're planning a modern-in-disguise traditional wedding, and cannot wait!

The Shoes that Broke My Heart…

October 15th, 2010 @ 9:15 am by Mrs. Giraffe

If any GIRAFFE GROOMSMEN are reading this, roll out, please! This is not for you!

The Shoes that Broke My Heart... : wedding chicago menswear shoes Goodbye

So after reading this post from Mrs. Cloud, I approached Mr. Giraffe with an idea.

The Shoes that Broke My Heart... : wedding chicago menswear shoes 007

I had always loved the idea of the groom and groomsmen wearing Chuck Taylors at the wedding. It may seem a little trendy right now, but I don’t mind. In fact, the trendiness just proves how good Chuck Ts can look with tuxes because you can find quite a few images popping up all over the web if you Google “wedding Chucks.” This idea has been in my head for a while, and I’d thought about it quite a few times. The trouble? I loooove Chucks—I have quite a few pairs in quite a few designs/colors—but Mr. G does not love Chucks. He does not like/own Chucks. He says they fit his feet weird. (I don’t believe him, of course.)

A while ago, I sent him the above photo from the Weddingbee gallery. My email to him was aptly titled “Your Dream Wedding.” Why, you ask? Because the groom in the photo was wearing Adidas Sambas. That would be Mr. G’s favorite shoe. He loves Sambas; lives in them, in fact. I remember a time when we first started dating when his Sambas were getting a little shifty. He’d clearly worn them out. And what is there to do when your Sambas have seen better days? Well…Mr. G went out and bought the same exact pair—because he loves them just that much. I thought it was a little silly to keep buying the same pair of shoes, but what can I say? I’ve watched him buy the exact same pair of Sambas over and over for five years. (Sambas come in white with black stripes, and he won’t even switch to those; he keeps on with the black ones.)

So I had played with the idea of the guys wearing Sambas (similar to the Chuck Taylor trend), but that was it. I had just thought about it. I mean, let’s be honest—black gym shoes with brown tuxes? Those shoes would single handedly (footedly?) take down my perfectly concocted color scheme. I think not.

Anyway, after reading that post on Weddingbee, I revisited the idea. For the heck of it, I logged onto the Adidas website. And what did I find?! Let me just say, I think my heart stopped for a minute.

That’s right!! Adidas Sambas in our exact wedding colors. OMG! I think I wet my pants! I happened to be hanging out with Mr.G at the time, and he even paused his new Final Fantasy video game to see why I was so excited. That’s got to mean something! Anyway, he loved the idea. I loved the idea. The shoes were on sale for $45. Life was good.

Or so I thought…

Those Sambas were on sale because it was the end of the road for them. They were old news in the shoe world. I had emailed Adidas and scoured the Internet and could only find a few pairs, mostly in kids’ sizes. Despite the fact that I told Mr. Giraffe I wouldn’t be disappointed if we couldn’t find them, I was pretty near heartbroken.

What could we do? Just wait and find out!

Please tell me there are other Samba wedding parties out there?

I assume from your post that you have already made other plans, but there are other brown Sambas available.

This is such a cute idea!!!!!!! I wish you the best of luck to get them in all the right sizes….would Mr. G be willing to wear a different type of adidas sneaker other than the Samba if it doesn’t work out? They make so many types of sneakers that are similar…possible the Gazelle? It’s worth a try.

My guy is a Puma guy, so he will most likely be in some form of Pumas rather than Chucks.

Our guys arent wearing sambas but we are customizing nikes (through nikeid.com) for them to wear for our wedding. They will also be their groomsman gift.

The sneaks are pretty rad actually. We can even personalize them with the guys names.

I’m all for the guys wearing sneakers. This has been one of the details of our wedding that I have been obsessed with since day one!

Good Morning Miss Giraffe,

I tried to send you a PM - however, I got a response saying she was not you. LOL

I think I may be able to help you obtain those shoes. Or at least get you connected with the right individual who may be able to help?

Please send me a PM soon and I’ll point you in the right direction.

Mr Coffee

My FI also loves the Sambas! I just showed him the picture of the groom wearing them and he smiled and said, “nice shoes!” So we just might end up having a Samba wedding (or at least a Samba reception).

@Bubbles: Mr. G wear the Gazelle? Haha - he won’t stand for it ;-).
@eloquence08: I would loooooove to see a groom in Pumas!
@CaitMarae: How cool is that? That Nike Id thing is pretty much the coolest ever! You’ve gotta share pics of your guys’ shoes!

Cute idea!

And we all know that boys are so much happier when they’re comfortable. :)
