Mrs. Earrings's Picture
Mrs. Earrings, Fresno, CA/ Nelson, New Zealand Age and Occupation: 20, Student, Wannabe Writer Fiance's Age and Occupation: 19, Photography Student Engagement Date: February 14, 2010 Wedding Date: January 2011 Venue: Gardens of the World About Me: I'm a girl from down under who grew up in Indonesia and I'm marrying a California boy. I'm addicted to all things sweet, have never met a chocolate silk pie than can get the better of me, and have dreams of one day being a fulltime novelist. I go weak in the knees for lace, tea cups, and a beautifully crafted sentence. When I get excited about something (whether it is historical linguistics or the Beatles) I tend to go overboard in research, and planning this wedding is no different. Mr. Earrings is my high school sweetheart, my best friend, and somehow we combine all our quirks into one big happy mess.
About Mrs. Earrings

Sometimes it can mean “green” and “convenient.”

Let’s rewind a little: A couple months back we were trying to work out all the items we need to hire for our reception. That’s the real downside of a venue like ours—almost nothing is provided (except a few tables, a hot water contraption, and one tiny canopy) so we have to bring everything in ourselves. And dealing with hire companies is pretty much my least favourite part of wedding planning. Anyway, long story short, the hireage list was expanding, the cost of it all was ballooning out of control (um, how much for a tiny dessert fork???), we were having to go to more than one hire company to get what we wanted, and all of that combined was turning something that should be simple into too much complicated business.

So we re-thought what we actually did need and whether there were some things we could beg, borrow or steal (just kidding…not much stealing…).

This way we managed to pare what we needed to hire from outside sources to just the 100 chairs for the reception from one single company. So much better.

One way that helped us achieve this was deciding to go the disposable route for utensils and dinner plates. After talking with our caterers, they agreed to provide compostable plates for no extra charge. Yay! All that was left for us to figure out were the eating utensils. I hated the idea of plastic, but wasn’t sure what our other options were.

Until I saw these pics:

And these

Cute, right? Perfect for a picnic wedding. :) After a little searching, I managed to find a source for these wooden utensils and a whole bunch of biodegradable napkins here in NZ. So now we just need a basket, some twine and maybe a stamp or two and we’ll see what magic we can work with these babies.

Did you go disposable for some elements of your wedding?

For my “recovery dinner” (or day-AFTER dinner, since we’re having a destination wedding and getting married on Friday), we are using disposable bamboo plates and utensils. I was so excited to hear about them from my caterer!

I totally considered this: http://www.weddingbee.com/2010/08/05/disposable-plates/. We are using disposable plates and forks for dessert time because we’ve already got so many china plates going for starters, salads, main course.. I figure why fuss. This is the perfect look for a picnic too! Although, as many girls pointed out to me on my post, buying disposable plates is usually not as cheap as renting them (who would have thought?). I did the research and it turns out it IS more expensive to buy disposable, unless you are buying the really cheap-o bad for the environment kind.

@Miss Glasses: that sucks that it didnt work out cheaper for you :( Thankfully for us, coz our caterer is providing the plates, it has worked out cheaper for us (and also coz we will be using vintage china for dessert). Otherwise i would have had to face my hire company fears!

I love this idea! An old college friend of mine actually started a company with the very same premise - check it out: http://sustainableparty.com/
It’s not as fancy as the ones you showed above but they have cool event guides and signage you can use to show how environmentally-friendly your party is!

We too want to do something more disposable…our wedding will be very casual and we dont see the need for fancy dinnerware. Thank you for the source!

I think bamboo can never look tacky…it is plastic that I am a bit wary of. Can’t wait to see how you package your utensils.
