I'm addicted to all things sweet, have never met a chocolate silk pie than can get the better of me, and have dreams of one day being a fulltime novelist. I go weak in the knees for lace, tea cups, and a beautifully crafted sentence. About Mrs. Earrings

Daddy’s Girl, Mama’s Boy

October 18th, 2010 @ 6:26 pm by Mrs. Earrings

Here are Mr. E’s top 3 “must haves” for our wedding (other than marrying me before the end of the day :) ) :

  1. That the ceremony will be outside (unless it is raining, of course)
  2. That we will have good photography
  3. That I get a dance with my dad, and that he gets a dance with his mum.

Father-daughter and mother-son dances aren’t so common in NZ as they are in the States, but because they are so important to Mr E (and because the idea of them has been growing on me) we are going to have them. We are both quite close to our parents. Like all kids and their parents, we have had our ups and downs, but no matter what, even if we felt they didn’t quite understand us, we always knew they loved us.

I know that Dad is very happy for me to be marrying Mr E, but as I am his eldest child and “little girl” I know that there will be a bittersweet element to the day as well. So it is important to me that Dad knows that he is always going to be very important in my life, and I hope that our father-daughter dance helps with that. Dad and I are definitely not the best dancers and we will probably feel a bit awkward out there in front of everyone, but we will have fun together anyway. :) Dad listens to Steven Curtis Chapman a lot, so this is the song we have picked to dance to:

It makes me tear up a little every time I listen to it. :P To save us from being the centre of attention for too long, this song will blend into “I Believe in You,” another Steven Curtis Chapman song, and Mr E and his mum will join us on the dance floor.

This song is not only special to Mr E and his mother, but also my father and me as it played at my high school graduation. I used to listen to it during my first year at university, when I desperately wanted to run away and go home. And the words “I believe in you” are the most important words Mr E has ever wanted to hear from his parents.

Will you have a father-daughter and/or mother-son dance at your wedding? What songs have you and your SO picked?

Thank you for sharing your father/daughter song. I have been searching high and low for a song to dance with my father to and the song you posted is perfect! It made my eyes water the first time I heard it and I knew that this song was “the one”. :)

This is the song my dad and I are dancing to, too! I used to make him play dress-up with me, so the first verse is perfect. We’re both shy about having all eyes on just us, however, so I think I’m going to take out the prom verse somehow to make it shorter. Great pick!

Hands down, the most beautiful, tear jerking father/daughter dance I have ever witnessed was my best friend’s. She danced to “Cinderella” with her dad, but she didn’t know until the song started playing that her dad had done a professional recording of himself singing the song. There wasn’t a dry eye in the place.

My daughter and husband danced to “I loved her first” by Heartland…and because they like many of you are on the shy side…half way through the song had the DJ invite other father and daughters to join them on the dance floor….I thought this was a great idea…
