About Ms. Sloth

Allergic Reaction

October 18th, 2010 @ 10:33 am by Ms. Sloth

A few months ago, right after we’d booked our venue, I was talking to one of my coworkers while heating up my Lean Cuisine in the kitchen. He asked the details of the wedding, and I told him that it was going to be at a botanical garden in May. He replied, “Sounds nice, but I hope that neither one of you has allergies.”

Well, crap.

We totally hadn’t thought of that, but it’s a major issue. The boy has terrible allergies in the spring. My allergies are much worse in the fall, but spring is no picnic for me, either. I can think of two outdoor weddings I’ve attended in the past few years—one in April, one in September—where I was a sniffling, miserable mess.

But that cannot happen on our wedding day. I won’t allow it.

Over the past few years, I’ve learned some ways to stop my allergies from getting too insane. So here are some of my tips:

1. Try every medication you can until you find the right one. I’ve been on Claritin, Clarinex, and Allegra. I took each one for several months at a time, and none of them did anything. Then I tried Zyrtec, and, miracle of miracles, after a month or so it actually worked! Everyone is different, so I doubt that Zyrtec will be the miracle product for everyone else. But if you try everything you can, something is bound to work better than the rest. A tip: if your allergies are seasonal, don’t wait until you start sneezing to take the meds. My allergies flare up in April and again in September, so I start taking my pills in February and August to build them up in my system.

2. Try nasal spray. Mr S’s doctor is awesome and loves to give out free samples. Last spring, the boy came home with a year’s worth of Nasonex. The year before, he got Flonase. A quick spray up each nostril every morning worked wonders for both of us.

3. Use a neti pot. I was really reluctant to try a neti pot because I was totally freaked out by photos like this:

But I gave it a shot anyway, and I’m so glad that I did. It takes a few times to get used to the feeling of water going in one nostril and out the other, but you’ll be amazed at how much stuff comes out of your nose. I’m gross, so I totally get a sick satisfaction out of seeing what was once up my nose. But more importantly, it’ll make your whole head feel clear.

So, allergies, are you reading this? You will not ruin our wedding day! We will not allow it!

Do you suffer from seasonal allergies? Are you worried that they might affect your wedding?

Love the Neti Pot, I also use it when everyone around me is sick or when I start feeling a cold come on!

Sounds like perhaps the location is not the best, can you change it? Being both full of medication does not sound like much fun either on your wedding day!
Then again the sniffles will probably be mistaken for tears of joy!

My FI’s grandfather uses that pot thing, he gets terrible headaches and he says ever since he started using that he hasn’t had any. So I imagine it works pretty good, though that picture totally freaks me out, haha.

I suffer from allergies but the pollen level and mold level have to be high.

I don’t suffer from seasonal allergies, but I did read recently that eating locally made honey is a great allergy fighter. It’s important to be local because the bees gather the pollen from the same plants that are giving you allergies. I forget how it works, but I read an article about this and then met a local honey gatherer (?) and he said the same thing. You may have already tried this, but if not, it might be worth trying.

I use a neti pot and it has helped a lot. Another thing that helped (although I didn’t want it to!) is cutting gluten. Someone suggested avoiding gluten for three days and seeing how I felt - unfortunately, A LOT better. I don’t have to avoid it all the time, but during allergy season? No bagel for me.

(But, hey, between that and the neti pot - no allergy meds either!)

After we booked our venue, I realized our wedding was taking place during the time of the year when my allergies are the worst. I visited my allergist, and he prescribed me a low-dose steroid to take the week of the wedding. He said it would get rid of absolutely all symptoms, and it did. I’d definitely visit an allergist and try to go that route. He said he prescribes them as short-term solutions all the time.

Haha! I get a sick satisfaction out of using the neti pot too… especially when I’m good and stuffed up. It’s gross and yet supremely fascinating.

Great tips! My family has such terrible allergies, it is one of the reasons we are getting married in the dead winter. Nothing is growing then! Tears will not be induced by pollen or ragweed.

yeeaaahhh, please don’t ever post a photo like that again. haha! I love those things though, we have the regular one, not the pot, it’s such a bizarre sensation! And I won’t hold it against you that you secretly get a kick out of the stuff that comes out. That’s how I feel about flossing, nettipotting, and popping zits… heehee

This is exactly why mid April to May is off season for me! Regardless of all the remedies listed, I still have a terrible time.

Definitely the most tasty remedy is having a spoonful of local honey every day, but start now so your body has time to build a tolerance towards the pollen.

Also, I used to get acupuncture on a regular basis and that really helps too.

I have horrible year Round allergies. I take xyzol (the new prescription altv to zyrtec) and singular every day. Yes everynight for the last 20+ years I’ve been taking allergy Meds. (i also had several years worht of allergy shots) it’s the only allergy pills that work for me. And ive tried them all. And as much as nose sprays are better- can’t do them. They don’t work for me for one reason or another.

If you’re desperate come wedding (sometimes allergies r so bad there’s nothing u can do) try a course of prednisone. It’s perscription. Essentially is a steroid. It’s safe to take 1-2x/ year. It really is a miracle worker. I’ve dine it a couple of times throughout the years. It’s amazing what it does for ur allergies. But like i said- it’s a last resort when nothing else helps.

Local honey! It has to be from the area where your wedding is (not just generic grocery store honey), but if you start eating a tablespoon a day a month or so before your wedding, it will really help. I just put mine in a cup of tea.

I never thought about taking local honey. I will have to try it thanks to all the postings and I really need to try the netti pot. My head feels so cloudy.

Haha I was going to recommend Zyrtec since it’s been my miracle in a pill. :)

That neti pot thing freaks me out.

I totally recommend Xyzal! It’s the only allergy medicine I’ve ever used that actually gets rid of the itchy, scratchy ickiness. I still have to take a separate decongestant, but Xyzal totally gets me through the seasonal allergy months.

The neti pot makes me feel worse. I must be doing it wrong. Zyrtec also has a horrible side effect for a small percentage of people where you can’t wake up in the morning & are in a fog half the day. Sadly I fall into that group - as an allergy medicine, it actually helps, but I can’t deal with the drowsiness.

I take Nasalcrom starting a month before the season. The doctors all claim it doesn’t do anything but last spring was the 1st time I could actually breathe, so I’m doing that (plus allegra) from now on.

I’ve been hearing about the local honey thing a lot recently. Sounds like it’s worth a try.

Make sure to carry some antihistamines with you. At a wedding I photographed, the poor groom had puffy, teary eyes and was sniffling the whole time. Thankfully I had some Claritine with me, and it cleared things up for him before his ceremony!

Doubling up on the second generation antihistamine (like Claritin or Zyrtec) and using nasal spray (like Flonase) is key! The really important part about the Flonase is taking it every day during your allergy season, not just when you are having symptoms. Whether you use the neti pot or not, using some saline in the nostrils tends to be very helpful too by keeping the nasal passages moist.
