I like reading wedding blogs, Photoshopping wedding design mock ups, making lists, and planning, planning, planning! I’m a bit of an anomaly, on one side I’m a very girlie girl, I collect shoes, I lay out my outfits 4-6 weeks in advance, and I’d never leave the house without my hair curled and makeup on. But on the other side, I’m a total tomboy, I love to go camping and hiking, play drinking games (hey, I’m Irish!) and most of my closest friends are guys. My fiancé and I are planning a DIY-focused wedding with a balance between easygoing (what he wants) and chic and stylish (what I want), and are tying it all together with elements in lavender, sage, butter cream and chocolate.
About Mrs. Cola

An Unwanted Post Wedding Chop

October 19th, 2010 @ 2:48 pm by Mrs. Cola

Guys, I was butchered.

I ranted about this several times last week on my post-wedding blog, but now that it’s officially a PWC, I thought I’d share with the hive. Brides, don’t try anything new with your hair before your wedding. Thank god I waited until after our wedding, even though I was itching to do something before. After the hair drama of last week, my stylist even said “Isn’t it a good thing this didn’t happen before your wedding?” Um, yeah.

But let me start at the beginning.

Last Saturday I went in for a cut and a color with my stylist of over 6 years. All I wanted was for my long layers to be cut up higher. You all have seen my curled wedding hairstyle, but this is what it looks like when it’s not all curled the other half of the time, with just the bottom of the layers curled under.

I told my stylist that I wanted chunky layers cascading down my back.

I also specifically said to her that by now, after the wedding, I thought I would be ready to go shorter, but I wasn’t. I told her that if I did go shorter now I knew I would be unhappy and regret it, so I just wanted to keep my length, but add more layering. Perhaps part of the blame should land on me because I didn’t bring a picture with me, but I didn’t think it was necessary when my stylist has been working with my hair for over half a decade, and I wasn’t asking for a big change.

And this is somehow what I ended up with. This is my freakin’ mangled post-cut hair, freshly washed and dried, but not curled (I have to curl my hair at least a little everyday because of the really coarse texture.)

Wait, are you having difficulty seeing why I was pissed? Here, let me clarify:

An Unwanted Post Wedding Chop : wedding hair mountain view Copyof

There was no way in hell I could wear my hair like in the first picture in this post, with just the ends curled under. I looked like an idiot! I was so unhappy and just got angry every time I looked in the mirror. My hair has always been my favorite feature, so this was a low blow. I totally get why the girls on America’s Next Top Model cry when they get their hair chopped off!

And so I tried spending 45 minutes spiral curling my hair for a couple of days to hide the bad cut, but I just couldn’t live with it like this. My bottom layer that was now exposed just doesn’t hold curl as well, as you can see in this picture I took at the end of the day. And this was after being terrified all day to lean back or bump my hair, and make the curls fall out!

An Unwanted Post Wedding Chop : wedding hair mountain view Img 1041

Plus the fact that the top layer was way too thick made it stick out way too much from the side view. My hair is just too thick to be reduced to two layers!

So after a really depressing few days, I called my stylist and told her that I just couldn’t live like this. She offered to have me come in and try to fix it for free. But as I suspected, there was no salvaging my long hair that I’d worked so hard on growing for years. The only solution was to cut it, so there wasn’t such a gap between the top layer and bottom layer.

So this is my unwanted and unintended post wedding chop, about 6 inches shorter than it was before. It’s just ok. At least I don’t feel depressed and upset when I look in the mirror, but I’m only just “alright” with my hair for now. It’s just hard when my hair is (was?) my favorite feature, and so much of my identity and look is tied to it. Maybe in 8 to 10 months when it grows out I’ll be happy again. But for now, this is as good as it is going to get.

With only the ends curled under, which is how I’ll wear it about half the time:

And with it more curled, how I’ll wear it the other half of the time:

Did anyone else get a post wedding chop that they weren’t happy with?

(All photos in this post were obviously taken by me. And sorry about my messy bathroom, I don’t have to share it with anyone so I don’t clean it as often as I should!)

This exact same thing happened to me in college! I wanted long layers, and came out with what I can only describe as a mullet! Super short “layers”, no medium layers, and some staggly hair left long! I had to cut it off, and it was the shortest hair I’ve ever had, and never wanted (think shirley temple!).

So I can totally relate. But lucky for you your hair is still long and gorgeous!

Have to say…I prefer it shorter too! You look great! I can totally understand why you were so horrified the first time around! What was she thinking?! You poor thing! :(

I think it looks better at is new length too so please don’t be so unhappy with it. It still looks “long” and your layers look great at the new length! Now you look like you have “Pantene” hair rather than just really long hair, it really looks great:-)

OH MY GOD WTF WAS SHE THINKING? I can’t believe she did that to your hair! Who does something like that?

Anyway, your hair still looks great, I actually prefer it shorter too :)

However, I can’t believe you went back to her to get it fixed..I don’t think I could have done that, no matter how long I had gone to someone!

i think your hair was pretty before, but i really like it better now.

but obviously, since you didn’t want it 6 inches shorter, i don’t blame you for being pissed.

I honestly think it looks great! I got an inverted bob that reached my shoulders after the wedding, but got bored with it. I went to only get layers put in it, and now its way too short. I hate it 99% of the time. I want my long hair back!!! Lesson learned, for sure. But luckily my hair grows pretty fast, so my Christmas it should be more to my liking. But I can’t even wear it up its so short, and I am just miserable with it. Ugh, the things we women go through with our hair!!

Oh, girl, you’re totally overreacting. It looks amazing! And I bet people won’t even notice that you got it cut!

Wow, that really was a terrible styling job! But the silver lining is that it really looks fantastic now! The bottom layer looks the way its supposed to look and I think it still looks long and luxurious but a little fluffier now that some of the weight is gone!

I definitely understand you being pissed- having your hair go shorter than expected is definitely a shock when you haven’t mentally prepared for it. Especially when there’s YEARS of growth in question.
That being said- I agree with pp’s– I actually like the “shorter” hair way better. It looks like you actually have some style to it rather than just a mass of really really long hair. (Which, is a look unto itself, but I prefer something with a real cut to it.)

Wow. It looks great now but I can’t believe your stylist let you leave the salon with the first cut. I have really long hair too, and I recommend finding a stylist who specializes or has a lot of experience in long hair. I finally found one after years and while it is an expensive and time consuming cut, I think I end up with exactly what you were describing. Do a google image search for pictures of Gisele from the older VS catalogs. Actually a lot of the VS models wear long cascading layers. I carried around my crumpled Gisele pic in my wallet until I found my current stylist, lol. Your hair ooks beautiful now though!

I have long hair too, and I know that people look at your hair and think “It’s still long, what is she crying about?” but I recently cut a few inches off of mine and I miss the length. My hair is still long but I miss the way it used to cover my nipples when I was naked — like a mermaid. Ha!

I think your hair looks gorgeous and healthy in the pictures of you in the yellow shirt! You’re a hottie :)

It looks AWESOME now! So bouncy and healthy! But I covet very long hair so I can imagine how you feel having to unwillingly give up 6 inches of length. And seriously… how can that woman call herself a hairdresser giving that kind of cut? I think I could do better if I took a pair of scissors to my own hair without a mirror.

Wow, your hair is sooooo long, even in the “after” picture! I’m so jealous, I’ve been growing my hair since July of 2007 and it just refuses to get long, so annoying!

I’ll admit I was shocked when I saw the first cut. I just don’t understand what your stylist was thinking! But the final product looks great and it’s still REALLY long, so in my opinion it’s a great result!

I had a stylist chop my hair off 4 months before my wedding. I wanted to keep it healthy so was gonig in for regular trims, but I made the stupid mistake of going to a new salon and he literally cut about 4 inches off my hiar. AFter I told him not tl take any length off. So I totally feel your pain!

@Mrs. Avocado: I am cracking up about the mermaid nipple coverage. I have always thought the exact same thing! I

I was totally expecting it to be a LOT shorter in the final pictures. I can’t believe she did that to your hair in the first place though! Holy Cow!!! The final product looks AMAZING though, your hair is still crazy long by most standards.

I think it looks great. But I feel your pain - its awful to hate your haircut. A friend of mine once grew her hair really long and decided to do Locks of Love. A fancy salon would cut your hair for free if you were donating it. I went with her, and she got a straight up mullet. Why would the universe repay her that way for her kindness? It was pretty sad, she cried, and there was no consoling her. Fortunately, hair grows back!

Oh cola! I’m so sorry! I think it looks really good with the fixed cut, but I definitely understand why you were upset!
