Avoiding a Breakout

October 19th, 2010 @ 10:27 am by Mrs. Elephant

I have a love hate relationship with my face. Most of the time I love it, but there are several moments when I hate it, and those moments always stem from a break out.

I’ve tried different products to prevent breakouts including the ever so popular Proactive system, and they all seem to work for a little bit and then it’s breakout city.

Now, I must take some of the blame (or all of it, but I like to go easy on myself) because I start off great with the daily regimen and then slowly start forgetting at night and sometimes skipping over a couple steps when getting ready in the morning.

I got tired of the high cost of Proactive (I was never a fan of the automatic deduction, especially when I would be sent another set before I was even half way done with the current set of products) and started to see the commercials for a new 3 step Clean and Clear product and thought I should give it a try.

I tend to not have one major big breakout, but more of a smaller almost rash type of breakout. The clean and clear didn’t seem to do very much for me either.

When we got my make up for our first set of engagement pictures done at the Clinique counter, I decided to buy some of their acne solutions as well as their dark spot corrector.

And here are a couple before and now shots. I’ve been using it for 5 months now and feel like it’s really making a difference.

I hope to see more improvement by the time April rolls around.

Did you switch to any new beauty products in preparation for your wedding? How did they work for you?

have you tried using the clarisonic??? the system itself is a little pricey, but it makes your face products work up to their FULL potential, and does wonders!!!!!

cetaphil daily face cleanser is an awesome drug store brand product. i’m glad clinque works for you, because i HATE them lol.

First of all, brave of you to have this post! I have to say, I’m so sick of adult acne. I have had one heck of a stressful year. What worked for me was actually switching to a stripped down natural brand called Evanhealy. I use the Tea Tree Gel Cleanser + one of the toners + a balancing lotion from Lush (Imperialis) and right now I love my skin.

I think what happened to me on some of the more intense stuff is that my face would lose moisture, overcompensate, and then I would break out.
I see the difference with Clinique! Yay! I think they are a great brand.

Yay! I’m so glad the Clinique worked for you. It’s the only thing that worked for me too, and believe me–I’ve tried them all: Proactiv, Clean & Clear, AcneFree, etc. It’s pricier than anything you can get at the drug store, but if you stick with it, it is well worth it!

Wow, it looks really good!! I stick to cetaphil and my clarisonic. It’s been a good combo for me.

Mr. M.’s sister loves the Clinique stuff. She has been using it for a couple months now and it has really made a difference!

I haven’t used the clinique dark spot corrector myself but I use Black and White Bleach Cream (bought on amazon) for $5. I just dab a bit on each “spot” I need to lighten and it definitely works.

I love the clinique skin care line! I was in China for a month in heavily polluted cities, and I never broke out once and I think it is because I had a sample (that I managed to get daily use out of for six weeks!) of the even better moisturizer. I also used their bacne spray, which is a great steal for $20 and my bacne has completely gone away, even though I don’t use it anymore.

<3 Clinique!!

I swear by Clinique for my acne, too. I tried everything else and finally tried it - and it worked! Love it!

I have the same issues! I have tried so many products (but I am lax, too, sometimes). I am seriously considering just going to a dermatologist and having her create a regimen for me and doing a few chemical peels or something.

The clinique line is literally the only thing that works for me. I tried everything, just like you. I still get breakouts with the clinique, especially around period time. However, they also have an emergency gel lotion- if you don’t have it, get it asap. It helps cut breakout time WAY down.

I’ve been contemplating the dark spot corrector. Good to know someone’s seeing results with it.

@IlsaLund: That I have not heard of, but I need to go pick up some travel sized items so I’ll be on the look out for the gel lotion! Thanks!

ive never had acne ever…and now that im 26 my face started to break out….i had been using MAC makeup for years and I can no longer wear it. So i switched over to using sephoras makeup, but i still get a lil pimple here and there. I tried pro-active and it seemed to work but, stupid me went back to using MAC and i broke out again and Proactive didnt work anymore =/ so now i make sure to wash my face at night, I try not to use too many things on my face. On weekend, i try not to wear makeup so my face gets a break. It seems to be working.

I’ve been using prescription face wash & cream since high school. I stopped for a while to try the Ance Free System (a rip of of Pro ACtiv, I think) and majorly broke out again. So back to the other stuff!

Wow, I think it’s working really well on your skin. I also have a love hate relationship with my skin because of break outs. I’m in the process of finding a great product. Proactiv didn’t work for me and expensive facial products are kind of out of my league. Keep us posted on how well Clinique keeps working for you. I use the face toner. It’s the best one out there. Even after I wash my face, it gets so much dirt out of my pores.
All the talk about Clarisonic makes me feel the need to save up for one though. lol ;)

I’ve been having issues with breakouts/scarring and have been looking for a new product to use, especially with my engagement and all the pictures that will be coming in the next year or so! The Clarisonic system sounds fantastic, but are you limited to using only their cleansers?

I use the clean & clear stuff and actually like it. Along with it, I use St. Ives exfoliating apricot stuff. I’ve had acne for many years, and it’s finally under control

I used to break out all the time and have tried everything. As a woman of color I know how annoying it is to first get a breakout and then have to deal with the dark spots they sometimes leave behind. I’ve always used oil of olay products and about 5 months ago began using their ProX line. It is amazing. No breakouts!! No lie!! I also use Ambie face cream, and it evened out those dark spots quick. I used to be a Clinique user, but after a while it stopped working on me. Same thing for Proactiv and Clean and Clear. Good Luck!!
