Mrs. Earrings's Picture
Mrs. Earrings, Fresno, CA/ Nelson, New Zealand Age and Occupation: 20, Student, Wannabe Writer Fiance's Age and Occupation: 19, Photography Student Engagement Date: February 14, 2010 Wedding Date: January 2011 Venue: Gardens of the World About Me: I'm a girl from down under who grew up in Indonesia and I'm marrying a California boy. I'm addicted to all things sweet, have never met a chocolate silk pie than can get the better of me, and have dreams of one day being a fulltime novelist. I go weak in the knees for lace, tea cups, and a beautifully crafted sentence. When I get excited about something (whether it is historical linguistics or the Beatles) I tend to go overboard in research, and planning this wedding is no different. Mr. Earrings is my high school sweetheart, my best friend, and somehow we combine all our quirks into one big happy mess.
About Mrs. Earrings

Hold on to your hats people, these two kids have joined the grown-ups’ table because we have just signed our first tenancy agreement together! Now, this post isn’t strictly wedding-related…but I’m pretending it is because marriage = making a home together, and home usually involves some sort of house to live in.

The title of this post is what my mother used to always say to console us kids whenever we had to pack up and move house/town/country when we were growing up (which was a LOT). “Home is where your heart is” didn’t really do it for us because we always said our hearts were back where we just came from, so our suitcases had to be the alternative.

My family (minus Mum) and I in the Denpasar airport 2007. Doing our typical “make jokes” routine so we don’t think about what we are leaving behind

One of the things Mr E and I have talked about over and over is our wish to have a proper “home” together and leave the itinerant lifestyle of our childhoods behind.

Well…that lifestyle probably isn’t quite over yet, what with our future travel and study plans. But as of now we finally have somewhere “permanent” to live for the next 2 years before moving back stateside. Which is huge for us, because I can’t even remember when I last lived in the same house for longer than 12 months.

Wanna have a squiz at our new home? Here she is: The ugliest house on the street!

Aww, she isn’t that bad actually. She just needs a TON of paint and TLC, plus re-wiring, re-carpeting, drains fixed, the garage demolished, windows rehinged, the list goes on… She was built in the 1940s and for the last 12 years has been very neglected. Friends of ours bought her last week as an investment property and offered it to us to rent for a very reasonable price, in exchange for our help renovating it. We said yes of course because 1) We really need somewhere to live after the wedding (who would have thought?), 2) We will gain some valuable house-fixing skills, and 3) The house has a big fence so we are hoping we can get a dog! Yes…I like our priorities.

We will move in right after the honeymoon and I can’t wait to get started on making her “home” for our new family unit. She certainly isn’t the Ritz….but she’ll have my suitcase, and, seeing as Mr E will be there, it looks like she’ll have my heart too. *sappy moment*

How did you feel when you got your first place (renting or buying) with your SO? Anyone else going to be doing extensive renovations during their first year of marriage?

Congratulations! I’m so excited for you two! My sweetie and I got our first place together about two and a half years ago. We began by renting an apartment together. Best of luck!

Hahaha today’s strange new word is squiz. I seriously stopped and had to read the sentence three times to understand. At first I thought it was some sort of game night or potluck that you were inviting the hive to…

Congrats! I absolutely love home renovations, although I’m not wild about paying for them :) My fiance was mentioning the other day how strange it is to be moving twice within 4 years (I’m being hopeful here, we’ve lived in the condo we’re trying to sell for about 3.5 years now), since we both grew up living in one place for about 18 years.

FI and I have lived together in this apartment for a year and a half - when he moved out here from CA, we moved into this place together so it was a fresh start for both of us. We had no furniture, so it’s been slow going building a home from scratch, but I wouldn’t change it for the world!

Awww, Miss E, this post makes me nostalgic. Mr. O and I have moved from Pittsburgh to Las Vegas to Boston together in the last five years, and although the big moves were sometimes scary, we often told each other, “I’m home as long as I’m with you.” You and Mr. E will love living together.

I totally know what you mean. I moved around a lot in college, and then went to Japan where I moved 4 times in 3 years, knowing that it was never “home”, now we are with my ‘rents which is definitely not gonna be permanent, we are moving up to San Francisco in a couple of weeks and hopefully will have a “home” for at least the next 2-5 years. Finally, a break from moving and a place where I can really let my creativity shine and put down some roots! It’s just an apartment though, and I am totally envious of the space your house provides and the endless possibilities you have for renovating. Congratulations and I hope your new home brings you and Mr. E endless happiness!

We just got married in June and we immediately jumped into renovating DH’s house. It has been hard, but it’s also really exciting to do a big project together and to make an “us” house! I think you’ll think so too, once you get into it. (I started a blog to chronicle our progress, http://www.newlifeoldhouse.blogspot.com if you want to see.)
