Mrs. Lioness, Atlanta Age and Occupation: 25, Physical Therapist Fiance's Age and Occupation: 25, Attorney Engagement Date: August 29, 2009 Wedding Date: April 2011 Venue: Anthony’s Fine Dining About Me: I’m a Southern girl with New England roots. I say "wicked" and "y’all" in the same sentence and I like to drink sweet tea with my lobster. Mr. Lion and I are both former Floridians now living in Atlanta, which fortunately is still SEC country...Go Gators! We both love baseball, coffee, traveling, cooking, and playing Words with Friends with each other on our iPhones all day long. I’m very passionate about the things and the people I love, and I tend to plan things with all of my heart...our wedding, of course, is no different! Oh, and also Mr. Lion is a first generation American of Cuban descent. I may look more like Lucy than Ricky, but I’m doing my best to incorporate some Latin elements into our vintage-garden-Southern wedding!

OOT Scoot Boogie

October 20th, 2010 @ 12:33 pm by Mrs. Lioness

Every time I see “OOT,” I start singing “Boot Scoot Boogie.” Maybe that’s not normal. But that’s just what happens.

Of course, I’m talking about OOT bags, or out-of-town bags! Approximately 84% of our guest list will be coming into Atlanta from elsewhere. Most are from Florida, we have several from Massachusetts, and even a few from overseas! Many of these loved ones have already expressed that they plan to attend our wedding. Mr. Lion and I are just so humbled by the fact that these people would inconvenience themselves just for us; the least we can do is give them a little somethin’ extra to make their stay more comfortable.

Though I’ve never actually received an OOT bag as a wedding guest, I’ve run into quite a few in the wedding blogosphere. My personal favorites are the ones with a theme:

A Baseball Basket by Kate Parker Weddings

I like the idea of building a basket around the couples’ interests (like the baseball one above), but what better theme for an OOT bag than a local theme? As an OOT guest, I would appreciate some exposure to local fare and flair; I’m sure some others would feel the same way. Most city-specific OOT bags that I encountered included a map, a list of fun local places, and some local delicacies, not unlike this Miami bag:

I found all kinds of inspiration for cities across the Northeast and the West Coast, but it was slim pickins for little old Atlanta. Then, I found some inspiration where I least expected it:

A light bulb went off over my head during one of my cherished weekly trips to TJ’s. What if we bought groceries for our OOT guests?! And not just groceries…Georgia-themed groceries! So naturally, I bought as many of these babies as I could get my paws on. (Get it? Lioness?)

Trader Joe’s makes these reusable grocery bags for every major city (Sister Lioness has a really cute NYC one with a fun spin on Lady Liberty’s “Give Me Your Tired”). They’re only $1 and they’re fabulous. We decided to fill our Atlanta bags with:

  • A glass bottle of Coca Cola
  • Peaches
  • Pecans
  • Peanuts

Aaaand that’s about all I’ve got so far. ”Cotton” balls? Maybe some Vidalia onion jelly? Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Could you include a bottle of Sweetwater beer for the adults? I miss the ATL! You could round out the GA specific stuff with standard OOT goodies like alleve, maps, recommendations for places to visit and eat, water, mints, etc…

I heard that The Varsity is now making canned Chili sold in grocery stores, so that might be a fun Atlanta item to include.

You might want to see what brand name items are from/ made in Georgia, like Mayfield. And then you could include a little insert with a list of items that your guests may not know come from GA.

Just be cognizant of airline rules if people are going to be flying in. Some people may not be checking their bags… FI and I recently got a OOT bag at a wedding in Chicago and we had to leave several thoughtful things in our hotel room (a bottle of wine!) and other things got taken from our carry ons in the security line at the airport (including a jar of jam). Things that will be consumed during your wedding weekend are fine (peaches, a bottle of coke), but who finishes a bottle of wine or a jar of jam in one weekend when you’re staying a t a hotel?! Just something to think about…

What an awesome idea! I didn’t know they made city-specific bags. Gotta love TJ’s!

That’s so great! I went to a wedding in Vermont and we loved all of the Vermont-themed gifts we got! It was awesome! One thing we really liked in our OOT bags was getting coupons or free admission tickets to surrounding areas on interest. They knew that everyone who was making the trip would be up there for longer than a day, so giving us affordable options for excursions was great! Also, a local map is always a plus :)

I was looking around for you and I found a link for some great Georgia-themed gifts for under a dollar…thought you might like some of their ideas! http://www.georgiagiftsforless.com/dollarstore.html

I’m also doing OOT bags for our guests. We’ll be featuring beach-themed items (for our Florida Keys wedding), but here are a couple of ideas that you can adapt:

1 - local tourist guide and/or entertainment magazine/newspaper (assuming they may have some free time)

2 - a city map, or maybe a MARTA map & a couple of tokens?

3 - local postcards with stamps

I love TJs! I didn’t know that they had them in the east. We definitely have an Arizona version of that bag.

I was born and raised in Atlanta!

You could include Varsity hats. You know the classic paper ones you can grab a handful or two of for free.

Pralines! (pecan, of course)
Or mini-torte style pecan pies.

So cute so cute so cute so cute… I have been trying to think of more things to put in the bag.. alas. Gone with the Wind Cliffs Notes? Some southern flowers, like Lilac or Wisteria? Plastic Civil War soldiers? Union ones, duh. As you can see, I’m out.

But I LOVE THE SWEETWATER IDEA.
