Growing up, I thought a lot about the type of man I wanted to marry. About the type of life we would have together and the family we would one day raise. Thankfully, Burger is everything I ever dreamed of and more.
What I didn’t spend a lot of time thinking about was the type of family and friends that man would have. I don’t think many people do. You fall in love with someone, and their family and friends come along for the ride, like them or not.
I know that this is not the case for everyone, and I hope that this post isn’t taken the wrong way if you happen to find yourself in a different situation… but I like to think that I hit the In-law Jackpot.
Burger’s family and friends have always just felt like home to me—they welcomed me with open arms, and I am so, so lucky to have them in my life. Along the same lines, my family and friends love Burger as their own, as they have since the very beginning, which warms my heart beyond measure.
I guess what I am trying to say in this ramble is that, while I’ve been talking a lot about details lately, to me, family and friends are what weddings are really about.
The people who make the trip to witness your marriage are what make it real, meaningful, and incredibly special. I feel so indebted to all of our people who were able to share in our celebration - who witnessed this major milestone in our lives.

This post is to honor them and thank them, and to remind the planning brides out there (I was you not so long ago!) that while linens and flowers and cakes and song choices seem ever-important during planning, it’s the people you love and that love you that make your wedding day amazing.

I definitely hit the “in-law jackpot” as well and am so thankful that we are surrounded by such amazing friends and family… thanks for the reminder about what is important!
what a great post!! And so true. I also feel like I have hit the in-law jackpot. I have also been thinking more about what a wedding is really about, and it almost makes me cry every time I think about how incredibly lucky I am. Hopefully I can get all of the sappiness out before the actual big day, or I may be a blubbering baby. I hope not!
This, I say to every wedding-hater out there. This.
When else in your life can you gather everyone who is important to you from every corner of your life and every corner of the globe in one place, other than your funeral, than a wedding?
I would love an in law jackpot ;-). Your families look so happy!
I agree with you completely that “family and friends are what weddings are all about.” In fact, I said those exact words countless times throughout our engagement. My husband’s parents had both passed away before I met him. It is nice to read your post and see how much you appreciate and love your in laws.
Ditto, @MrsBurger! I’m with you - my future in laws are amazing people, and both of our families love spending time together! Our engagement party was a blast, all thanks to our lovely families.
I’m glad so many of you have a similar sentiment. I feel so sad for people with horrible in laws (like our own Mrs. Socks… I can’t believe these posts ran on the same day
