Mrs. Ostrich's Picture
Mrs. Ostrich, San Francisco/Hawaii Age and Occupation: 30, Fashion Buyer Fiance's Age and Occupation: 38, Copywriter Engagement Date: October 4, 2009 Wedding Date: April 2011 Venue: Sweet ceremony by the sea and sunset celebration on the North Shore of Hawaii About Me: Born in the city of angels and residing in the city by the bay, I’m a fearless fashion buyer by day, a passionate blog author by night and a dreamy bride-to-be in between. I thank my lucky stars to live in such a stunning city that gives me gifts like organic honey lavender ice cream, movie nights in the park, tucked away beaches, legendary record stores, '80s dance parties, awesome sports teams, stellar flea markets, and vintage bookshops. Oh, and I love to dance! We always find every excuse to escape to the beach, and decided a little seaside wedding in Hawaii is our idea of bliss. Full of our favorite people, music, food and sparkly lights, this is one sunset celebration we will always remember.

With all of the big stuff booked and bought, Mr. Ostrich and I are now working on the little bits…which to us, mean just as much as the big ones. :)

What are we starting with first?

The favors!

I had mentioned that Mr. O and I are major music fans, right?

Our entire life, including the 10 years we’ve had together, has not only a sea of memories, but also an endless soundtrack to accompany each major moment in our lives. Mr. Ostrich stole my heart with the first mix tape {CD} - an ’80s new wave+Motown serenade - he made me many moons ago. For every road trip, adventure and new season, I whip up a new playlist. Because for us, a little music makes everything better!

So when the topic of wedding favors came around, we knew, without a doubt, we wanted to make a little “soundtrack” of our weekend in paradise. :)

Now came the trickier part—searching for design inspiration. We wanted the CD to look like a cool record store album, not a wedding favor. And after a little browsing, here are a few of the awesome ideas we came across:

Who new CD favors could look so cool? As we speak, with too many photos, fonts and colors to consider, we’re narrowing down our “album cover” and CD label designs, created by the Ostrich duo, down to the final picks. Then we’ll edit down our soundtrack down to our favorite 11 tunes. And once those are ready to go….it’s time to put these beauties together!

And while the final design is yet to be revealed, today I thought I’d share with you how to make a CD wedding soundtrack of your own…Ostrich style. :)

Ostrich DIY CD Favors:

The Stuff:

  • An awesome song list
  • Your favorite CD cover design, sized to the dimensions of your CD sleeve {5″ x 5″}
  • Your favorite CD song list design, sized to the dimensions of your CD sleeve {5″ x 5″}

The steps:

  1. Burn your wedding soundtrack onto your CD. Be sure to obtain your music legally! See how Mrs. Tiramisu did it here.
  2. Print out your CD cover design onto your fancy inkjet paper, cut to size
  3. Print out your CD song list design onto your fancy inkjet paper, cut to size
  4. Apply spray mount to the back of the CD cover design
  5. Gently place the CD cover design to the front side of the CD sleeve. Press firmly to secure adhesive.
  6. Apply spray mount to the back of the CD song list design
  7. Gently place the CD song list design to the back side of the CD sleeve. Press firmly to secure adhesive.
  8. Print out your CD cover design onto your CD label
  9. Peel and apply the printed CD label onto your wedding soundtrack CD
  10. Slip CD into CD sleeve
  11. Cut approx 2 inches of Washi tape. Apply the tape at the top center of the CD sleeve to keep CD in place.

{for ribbon & twine fans, you can use this instead of washi tape to keep your CD secure}

The end!

How are your favors personal to you as a couple?

We’re doing the same thing! Except I’m going to make a full on booklet insert to go with the CD. I kept trying to figure out how/where to use all of the extra engagement pics and quotes/lyrics/poems/etc. that I have that we won’t be using for readings and finally figured I’d combine them all into a little booklet that will go with our mix CD! :)
