Just Dance…?

October 22nd, 2010 @ 4:41 pm by Mrs. Giraffe

Despite the fact that I’ve actually never once felt like P. Diddy when I’ve just woken up in the morning, I haven’t discovered yet if I’m flossy or not, and—to this day—I cannot tell you what a Hollaback Girl is, I’d like to think I’m pretty up to date with the music scene these days. I used to be an indie-music girl, but the hour-long car ride to and from work for the last six months has had me listening to the radio and keeping up with the music that’s popular now.

And truthfully? Sure, I love indie and folk music with all my heart, but I’m a closet Lady Gaga addict. It’s true—I love her in all her Kermit the Frog and meat-suit-wearing goodness.

On the upside, most people know pop music because I assume most people, like me, hear it on the radio. We all know those songs you hear, and you can’t help but bob your head to them (e.g., Lady Gaga). This sounds like good news for this reception/party/awesome explosion we’re holding less than seven months from now.

The downside? Well, Mr. Giraffe, being a classically trained musician and all, doesn’t have the same affinity for current pop music as I do. He doesn’t quite feel the same way about Ms. Gaga as I do, and it’s been hard to agree on the type of music to play at said reception.

After a while, though, we did realize that what we want is a big party, and there’s a chance that guests won’t feel like rocking out as much if they don’t recognize the music. (And, chances are, if Mr. Giraffe and I stick to our normal indie/folk selection, people won’t recognize it.)

So the plan? Well, how nice of you to ask; we’re going to make sure to put our favorite songs on our “do play” list and then let the DJ take control and play whatever gets the people partying. This way the songs that are important to us, and that we love, will be around for everyone to enjoy in between maybe a little Gaga, Ke$ha, or anyone else out right now. (Oh, and we also have plans for our “do not play” list…take that, “Chicken Dance”!)

The best thing about the plan? How eaaaassssssy it is to execute. Naturally, being the crazy planner I am, I had started to make our playlists like a year out, but that was all before we booked our DJ.

We’re going with Spinnin’ Discswho were totally cool about us meeting them, and who totally swayed me with their online planning tools. All we do is search through a database of a bajillion (approximately) songs, and with one click we can add them to the “do play,” “do not play,” or “suggested play” lists.

Just Dance...? : wedding chicago music Screen

See? Look at the screen shot of awesomeness! It’s the most convenient thing in the world. Even though we don’t live together, and we don’t see each other every day, we can do this together by logging on to the website. I can’t get over how easy it is to do and how nicely it works for us.

We didn’t meet with our DJ specifically, but we met with Laura, the owner, who was super helpful and sweet. I am completely confident Spinnin’ Discs will do an amazing job, and no doubt that confidence comes from knowing that any song change I make at any time goes right to the source. No worries about being annoying (i.e., updating and resending playlists) to our vendor. Woohoo!

Going into the meeting, we weren’t planning on hiring them, just because they were $300 more than the other DJ we met with. But it turns out they were offering $200 off, which put them right into our budget! That was a nice surprise, seeing as how I was already getting mighty tempted at the idea of online planning tools.

Oh man, I cannot wait to dance!

Just Dance...? : wedding chicago music Dance D OK…not that kind of dancing ;-)

Anyone else planning online? Which vendors are you doing it for?

We’re doing our own music (ipod + friend who likes to DJ), but we’re definitely dealing with the debate between songs people know and our favorite songs.

Mostly because my fiance is a total music snob, one of those “i liked them before they got popular” people. Whereas while I like some of his stuff, I don’t like music snobbery, and I think it will be a lot more fun if people know more of the songs.

That is an awesome tool! Whoever came up with that idea is a genius!

My 85 year old gramma made it mandatory that I play Lady Gaga at my wedding. That’s her girl.

We’re going to hand the DJ a list of “dinner songs” (which will be more personal), “dance songs” (the fun stuff that more people will know), and “don’t play that crap” (the chicken dance).

Love Gaga as well.. and unfortunately (i really did not want the stupid chicken dance either) my fiance loves it. His only two requests were - a catholic priest and the damn chicken dance. Ugh! so I guess I have to give him what he wants… even though it pains me to do so. What can I say, I love the man.

That’s so awesome!! I’m super nervous about my reception music.. This sounds like a great way to customize your playlist!

My fiance and I pretty much had this conversation in the car today. He hates pop music, but I told him our playlist had to have stuff people could dance to. People don’t dance to Simon and Garfunkel. I told him he could make the dinner playlist.

Your music people have an excellent system. My friend had to give her DJ a “must play” CD and he forgot about it and played about 2 of the songs… Not good.

@Entangled: I totally agree! I would love to play just songs we love, but then not nearly enough people would enjoy it!
@kirabee: It’s amazing! It’s so easy!
@finlandfairy: Oh no! That makes me so sad - what an awful thing!
@Susie Q: Oh, the thing we do for love ;-).
@ccd0: Coolest. G-Ma. Ever.
@missDNA: For serious!

I know this is really old but I had to comment because I searched for “lady gaga”. Just saw her in concert a few days ago and I am still in my concert high. I just wanted to tell you that I think we are twins. My hour commute to and from work from this job that I’ve had for six months ‘made’ me listen to the radio. I used to listen to NPR every morning. That wore off after a few months. And now all I listen to is the fun dance music, because, let’s be honest. You just can’t help it! You have to play Gaga! She’s awesome!
