I dream of becoming a best selling novelist like Elizabeth Gilbert or Julie Powell (a girl can dream, right?), and love long road trips, a beautiful countryside, music, blogs, books, and all things vintage/thrift/antique/or homemade. I’m a Virgo, i.e. overly sensitive, emotional, and critical, and there’s no such thing as short and sweet in my world. I want to say and do it all. Mr. Brooch grounds me. I point where to go and he figures out the way. He’s a pragmatic fancy-pants who enjoys video games and movies. We both adore our mutt, Rocky, and spending time with our amazingly supportive family and friends. We’re planning a garden wedding with a formal reception with lots of whimsy and unique, Southern-inspired details.

The Girl Who Cried Dress: Part 2

The Girl Who Cried Dress: Part 2 : wedding arlington wedding dress Untitle01 Untitle01

So, after my first run in with David’s Bridal and before my second one, I spent a lot of time at other bridal salons; almost every other bridal salon in Virginia, actually!

No, seriously.

I had a two-week hiatus from work and I made it a point to go shopping for a wedding dress during that time. I felt bad that I didn’t go to Running of the Brides event at Filene’s Basement in Washington, DC, which I had wanted to do, but decided I wasn’t cut out for such an event. My girls were gung-ho and wanted to do it (quite a few of them even took off work), but I figured since I have such a hard time making decisions [any decisions], there was no way I was going to be able to find a wedding dress in such a rushed fashion. I booked an appointment at Leesburg Bridal and Tuxedo instead and geared up for a week of wedding dress shopping.

Leesburg Bridal and Tuxedo

  • Loved the variety of dresses!
  • Loved the attentive staff (they even sent me a thank you note)!
  • Loved having the store to myself!

I liked this shop so much that I went twice! Once with my stepmom and then again with my BMs and my MOH. Even though the store is really, really small, they have a ton of dresses! They carry a wide variety of designers and the staff are super nice and attentive.

My girls and I had a fabulous time. We tried on a bunch of gowns! We had the entire store to ourselves, because apparently it’s really slow during the week and that made it a lot of fun. We were there for 3 hours! That’s a long time, I know, but it was fun times! Nobody complained.

Here are two dresses I tried on and liked:

After two trips to Leesburg Bridal and still no feelings of finding “the one,” we headed out a little further to Manasas to a place with an excellent reputation:

Jeanette’s Bridal ’N Tux Boutique

  • Loved the store. It’s big and beautiful!
  • Didn’t love the limited number of dresses
  • Didn’t love the size of the samples

Jeanette’s Bridal ’N Tux Boutique is a top-rated seller of bridal gowns in this area. My stepmom purchased her gown from Jeanette’s and lots (I mean lots) of her friends, their daughters, even coworkers found their dress there as well.

I absolutely loved the store. If you want the real bridal experience (something kind of like Kleinfeld), head to Jeanette’s Bridal! Just the appearance of the store is enough to catch your attention. The staff was fabulous and they really go out of their way to make dress shopping a memorable experience. We worked with a woman named Maria and she was very funny and attentive. She was determined to “make us cry”! She said, “that’s when you know!”

Unfortunately, I didn’t feel the dress selection was as wide as I would have liked. There were a lot of nice gowns, but Leesburg Bridal and Tuxedo had a lot more of a selection. I also felt that most all of the dresses at Jeannette’s were small. None of the samples were fitting and that was pretty discouraging.

Here is the one we really liked:

Even after hitting these two very prominent dress shops, I still wasn’t sure I had found the one. I had definitely started to accumulate favorites, but there was nothing I was ready to commit to 100 percent. Was I just afraid to say yes to another dress or had I just not found the right one yet?

I like the 2nd dress–because it looks similar to mine as in it is classic and elegant. I have a history of not committing to dresses myself! First wedding…I bought THREE dresses! And no I did not wear all three or even two, I wore just one on the day. Now I’m headed down the isle for the 2nd time and guess what?! I have been engaged less than 6 months and have already purchased TWO dresses! So…I don’t blame you for trying on a million if you need to! Do NOT do what I did and jump on the first one you love–because you may regret it…
HOWEVER. That being said…if you watch “say yes to the dress” on TLC (one of the best best best shows EVER!) then you will hear them repeat the same advice over and over “stop looking after you find one you love!!!”
My advice is to do what I did (this time, when I bought the SECOND dress!) which is go with a simple, elegant dress. I have decided if I start to panic or change my mind again, I can always switch up the jewelry or the sash or the shoes and it can go so many ways being such a clean classic style!

…..Not that I am one who should be dolling out advice on this matter!

I love that last dress…the sweetheart neckline looks great on you. And I can understand your fear of committing to just one, especially when we are bombarded with images of so many gorgeous dresses! It can just feel like a lot of pressure. In that way, I am thankful that I only had one chance to go dress shopping (i wouldnt have been able to afford what i wanted in NZ so i had one chance to shop in the States). That way, I didnt have any chance to change my mind!

I second Earrings, I only had one chance and it really helped with the whole commitment thing. I bet I’d go to a million stores if I had the chance. I’m hooked on your dress story!

I tried on the last dress too! and was thinking about purchasing it until I found one that I loved more! Don’t worry, you’ll find your gown no matter how many you have to try on! :)

Number 3 is gorgeous, but I’m going to have to say number 2 since I can’t see the rest of 3…they’re all beautiful though!!
