Mrs. Glasses, Tokyo/Los Angeles, CA Age and Occupation: 24, English teacher Fiance's Age and Occupation: 27, English teacher Engagement Date: September 2008 Wedding Date: October 2010 Venue: Parents' backyard About Me: I’m an expat living in Tokyo. I’ve been in Japan for almost three years now, where I met my fantastic English fiance. It’s time to leave Japan, so we are planning a fun, intimate, backyard ceremony back home in the suburbs of L.A. in October. Our wedding will be a mix of my love for food, beer, my Japanese culture, and Mr. G’s Englishness. We are on a tiny budget and DIYing almost everything!
About Mrs. Glasses

Since we aren’t having dancing, I thought we’d need something fun to do at our backyard wedding. We absolutely did not have a budget for a photobooth but we did have money for a fauxtobooth! We’re not builders but luckily for us, Mrs. Pin Cushion is! We ordered one from her Etsy store!

We work with what we’ve got in the Glasses household, and what we’ve got is Photobooth on my MacBook. We set it up on a table with a basket of props from the 100 yen dollar store; right now is a great time to buy, as there are tons of cheap “costumes”. We bought a clown wig, a pirate hook and eye patch, fun sunglasses—things like that!

We also put together an 8 foot arch, which will be decorated with pink and white David Austin roses and lit up at night. We used a coupon…and seriously? It was $25 at Michaels! Score!

While we were putting up stuff, we noticed something watching us. Mr. G is great at befriending wild animals (he once told a turtle to get off the road and it listened!) and this little guy got closer and closer until…

We’re calling him Buddy and hoping he shows up at the wedding. He obviously isn’t shy!

We had another productive day but you guys, I CRIED! I am NOT a crier. I went on an insane rampage in the garden, deciding that the back corner was hideous and started pulling out weeds left and right. I got so frustrated and so worried about the state of the garden that I started crying. I never, ever thought I’d cry but I’ve been in a glass box of emotion this whole week. The lawn still looks…well, fug, but I’ve thought of the perfect solution! You’ll see soon!

Have you had emotional moments that have surprised you while you’ve been planning?

I so feel you on that last paragraph! I remember having so many doubts about having a backyard wedding and getting so worked up about the extra stresses getting married in a backyard presents. But ours somehow turned out beautifully, and I know yours will too! There is something about a backyard wedding that is so personal and elegantly simple, and once you add all of your little heartfelt details to the mix, no one will notice some weeds here and there! (And maybe try covering up the areas that do bother you with some decorations?) Thinking of you this week, and can’t wait to see how everything turns out! :)

Aww…it’s okay. Everyone has their moments. We have all these expectations and thoughts in our heads that sometimes it becomes overwhelming. I love everything so far. It’s all coming together. The fauxtobooth looks so cute, I love the arch and how cheap it was (can’t wait to see it lit up with white and pink roses. So sweet!) and that photo of Mr. Glasses with Buddy is just awesome. I hope he shows up to the wedding too.
