Second Thoughts

October 25th, 2010 @ 12:32 pm by Ms. Sloth

No, not about the wedding.

I’m starting to have second thoughts about a decision that Mr. S and I came to a long, long time ago—that we wouldn’t have a first dance. It was Mr. S’s preference, and I was OK with it because I can’t dance, and because I don’t like being the center of attention.

When I told my friends that Mr. S didn’t want to have a first dance, they ganged up on him and told him to consider it. They suggested to us that I let him choose the song. And he softened up a bit—he’ll consider it. Yay!

So, if we have a first dance, it’ll be Mr. S’s choice. But there are so many songs I love that would be amazing for a first dance…

Like “Lover’s Waltz” by A.A. Bondy:

Or “First Day of My Life” by Bright Eyes:

“I and Love and You” by the Avett Brothers:

“No One’s Gonna Love You” by Band of Horses:

“To Be Alone with You” by Sufjan Stevens:

“Wild Horses” by The Flying Burrito Brothers

“All My Days” by Alexi Murdoch:

Are you having a first dance? What did you choose for your song?

I love First Day of My Life! That was one of our contenders.
We also talked about No One’s Gonna Love You but couldnt decide if it was a break up or stay together type song. We decided not to use it.
We recently saw Band of Horses and when they sang that song, the singer said “this is dedicated to anyone who has ever had an ex-boyfriend or ex-girlfriend” and after he sang the first “no one’s gonna love you like I do” line, he interjected “except that other guy”. Husband and I looked at each other and we were both thinking “good thing we didnt pick that song!”

‘First Day of My Life”! We are having our band learn the Iron & Wine version of “Such Great Heights” because that’s a special song for us.

Those are all great songs! I think it’s gonna be hard to choose a first dance song. but my FH loves “First Day of My Life, ” I would skip it if it wasn’t for him.

We had everyone come up to do the first dance with us and I don’t regret that decision at all (a year later). Neither of us would have been comfortable dancing in front of everyone and I have some great pictures of us dancing surrounded by people we love.

Our wedding was very indie-centric, except for our first dance. We did a Texas two-step to “Somebody like you” by Keith Urban. It’s my secret shame (to people in Boston) that I went to Texas A&M and went two-stepping every Friday night in college. So, I taught my husband (who was eager to learn), and we tore it up. It was a nice nod to my upbringing, since we got married in CA, where all my other family lives. It was fast paced, and fun to watch and do!

We chose “Forever” by Ben Harper. Not too cheesy and it’s a modern song that I just love.

We almost went with The Avett Brothers “I and Love and You” (we’re huge fans :), but decided on their song “Offering”. It’s a bit fast-paced at the end, but it worked out great because all of our guests starting clapping along for the last 20 seconds as we sort-of danced a little faster to go along with the music. It was one of my favorite parts of our wedding!

Oh I love Alexi Murdoch! That’s my calm down zen out song. I loved our first dance moment- I recommend it. But my fave moment was what I call our 2nd first dance when they played Luckiest during dinner and Mr. T and I got up to dance.. alone… in front of everyone. We couldn’t help it, it’s a special song.

I love all of these! they are so great. I hope that he does choose one that you guys can love together. The first dance is so nice. I think it would be so sad to miss it. It is really a great time to take a few moments to share just to two of your together, even if everyone else is watching.

Our first dance is to Till My Dying Day by Brooks and Dunn. We met at a Brooks and Dunn concert so we always knew it would be a song by them. We also love country and this song talks about forever and really embodies us.

Yup! :D We’re having a first dance, and our song is the Beauty and the Beast title song.

It’s quite sweet, the Mister is very excited about it!

The Avett Brothers song is beautiful but I’d be a little wary of the ending lyrics: “Three words that became hard to say/I and love and you.” I always thought it was about falling out of love. Though you could just fade the song before that part!

We are having a first dance, and choosing the song is the FI’s job. I was a dancer and have a bajillion songs I could dance to, and I mostly wanted him to be comfortable.

We danced to Ray LaMontagne, “You are the Best Thing”…we waved our friends on to join us on the dance floor about half way through because we don’t love being the centers of attention either!

Good luck!

We chose “First Day of My Life” and let me tell you…it was one of the most special moments to hear him singing this song under his breath to me.
We also considered “No One’s Gonna Love You” but Bright Eyes took the cake.

All My Day is one of the songs My fi and I were thinking of since the characters in the movie were so much like us.

It went like this for us:
-I picked a song. We agreed on it. Done.
-time passes
-whenever I hear the song, I get a little weepy
-we decide maybe weepy isn’t right mood, and pick another song, moving the original first-dance song to the last song of the evening.
-whenever I hear the song, I get SUPER weepy, because that means the wedding will be over!!!
-we axe the song altogether.

Now whenever I hear it, I kind of chuckle at that whole process. But what we ultimately had as both the first and last dances were much better. More fun, less weepy. :)

Love No one’s gonna love you — one of my fav. songs, so I would choose that if you did a first dance :)

My processional is going to be to an Avett Brother’s song. Also, I love “I and love and you.”

Husband likes Brad Paisley, so we did our first dance to one of his songs. However, since we aren’t good dancers or anything, we decided to cut the song after the first chorus. So our first dance was only 1 minute and 20 seconds long. I was worried we would bore people with our swaying back and forth for the full 4 1/2 minutes, so we went that route. Happy with that decision.

It’s funny though, when I think back at our wedding, what really reminds me of the wedding is the song I walked down the aisle to, not our first dance.
