Mrs. Meerkat, Kalamazoo, MI/Riviera Maya Age and Occupation: 30, Application Engineer Fiance's Age and Occupation: 23, IT Consultant Engagement Date: July 26, 2008 Wedding Date: December 2010 Venue: Al Cielo / La Laguna About Me: I’m a tech-savvy tomboy with an affinity for hot tea and good sushi. Us Meerkats are just a couple fun lovin’ geeks from Michigan. We love anything having to do with movies, books, video games or technology and we hold a special place in our hearts for our two very spoiled shih-tzus, Wicket and Bravo. We also LOVE to travel. We love it so much it only took us 12 hours after we got engaged to decide to have a destination wedding. We are working our little Meerkat tails off planning a rustic-chic, travel themed destination wedding in the Riviera Maya with a semi-formal, vintage-turned-modern, outdoor at home reception back here in Michigan.
About Mrs. Meerkat

Definition: Geek - One who is perceived to be overly obsessed with one or more things including those of intellectuality, electronics, etc.

I confess. I am totally a geek. When I get into something, I research the subject until I can tell you every little thing about it. Every aspect of our wedding has been researched with geek enthusiasm and picking a company for printing our photo guestbook was no exception.

When I started doing the research I was really surprised how little information there was out there comparing different companies to each other. Don’t get me wrong, there are tons of reviews for each company, but that wasn’t much good to me unless I had some kind of baseline to compare them to.

Then I found this amazing article:

Which Company for Printing Our Photo Guestbook? : wedding albums riviera maya 12705631 1270563

The Great Photo Book Round Up Review

Seriously, the guy who wrote this, Jason Dunn, out-geeks me any day. (Yes, that is a compliment, in case you were wondering. *grin*)

Jason actually went out and created/printed the same photo book with 12 different companies so he could compare the quality. He not only reviewed each one with a rating system but made complete videos showing each book’s quality.

After reading all 12 reviews and watching all the videos I had it pretty much narrowed down to two companies; Mpix and AdoramaPix. If you read my last post you already know I chose AdoramaPix, but let me break down my reasoning.

First, here is the Mpix video from Jason’s review:

The Great Photo Book Round Up Review

And here is the AdoramaPix video:

The Great Photo Book Round Up Review

AdoramaPix Wins:

  • Matte and slightly metallic looking photo cover (instead of Mpix glossy)
  • Thicker paper
  • Printing on spine
  • Lay flat pages/spine

We made the final decision to go with AdoramaPix after I was lucky enough to be able to see in person a book from each company that a friend had made. The one thing that really stood out that I couldn’t tell from the video was the thickness of the paper. It gave the book that professional feel that the Mpix paper was lacking.

As I wait impatiently for our photo guestbook to arrive from AdormaPix I have to ask:  have you ever made a photo book? Which company did you use? How was your experience?

Oh boy, thanks for sharing the link to that review article–so helpful! I’ve been working on creating my own photo guestbook and was thinking of using Blurb (I had seen the name tossed out in the Hive before). I’m glad I can now compare their quality to others’!

I used MyPublisher for our guestbook. I was very pleased with it. the pictures were clear and the program was easy to use. Not the quality that I want for my wedding album though, the pages were like a normal book.

I feel like this post could have been written by me. I am the exact same way! Research, research, research! I haven’t made mine yet, but I bought a groupon for photobook america to make our guestbook after we get our engagement pictures back. My friend ended up making her wedding album with AdoramaPix after I gave her the findings of my research. I haven’t seen the completed product yet but, she is very happy with it.

I’m leaning toward AdmormaPix now after talking a lot about it here on the hive, and seeing this article! Glad to hear it came out really nice in person too!

I totally just went through all of this making photobooks for our families! I used Blurb for my guestbook and I was happy with that, but I went with Adorama for our families!

A friend of mine runs a site, http://www.photobookgirl.com/ and it is ALL about… photobooks! She reviews tons of different companies and posts coupons daily :)

I’m definitely going to thoroughly watch all those videos when I have more time. Thanks for finding this research. I’ve been thinking about using shutterfly since I got a free book for posting a review. But maybe I’ll use that for something else if I like any of those better.

OH thank you for sharing this!! i have already chosen AdoramaPix for our wedding photobook and i have been trying to find something that shows the quality of their books better! their website severely lacks any good photos or videos to show their books. i still decided on them because from the descriptions they sound pretty good and i love the binding technique. we used Picaboo for our guest book tho and it turned out really nice. but for the photo album, we need something of much better quality and it looks like i chose correctly! :)

p.s. after watching the video now, i can update that they DO provide more than 50 pages (I am using the 76 pg option). also, i disagree that just because there’s no text box on the spine in the editing window doesn’t mean you should assume you can’t add text there. i feel like he should have known that.

We used adorama pix for our guestbook and I LOVE it and it was fast and easy. I got a Blurb book for boudoir, and I like it for the discreet little gift it made, but I’d want the thicker paper of Adorama for a display album.

@Kemi82JP: The review is six months old and at the time what he said was true. They have made some updates for more pages, etc. :D

I used AdoramaPix for my guestbook and boudoir pix. I loved them and the turnaround time was quick. Totally recommend them!
