I love trashy reality television (Jersey Shore, anyone?), online shopping, Sunday brunch, Central Park, and random celebrity spottings on the streets of Manhattan. While I love NYC, I miss good Tex-Mex, my college friends, central A/C, and being in close proximity to a Target. Bring On the Cake!

October 25th, 2010 @ 1:43 pm by Mrs. Hippo

Next on the list of things to do during the Dallas planning extravaganza was deciding on our cake vendor. Oh hell yeah. Bring it!!

King Hippo and I had two tastings scheduled during the week. We headed to the first bakery, which was recommended by our reception venue, and fell in love. Ummm… The. Most. Amazing. Cake. EVER! For real. The cake was dense. The frosting was sweet and creamy (ugh, I hate that word). And the bakery owner was so nice. We were sold.

King Hippo clearly has a mouthful of cake deliciousness.

Ummm… yes. It was that good.

After falling in love with the taste, we looked through books and books of cake photos and made some decisions on the design with the help of the bakery owner. Honestly, it was a lot harder than I thought it would be ’cause there were so many options…too many options. We will be using our rhinestone cake topper, so the design didn’t have to be over the top, but I really liked the look of the different shaped tiers. Here’s what we decided as far as the design goes:

Panini Bakery

For 120 guests, we would only need a three layer cake, so we decided to add a false bottom layer to make it look taller. We decided on a traditional white cake with vanilla buttercream frosting and a white chocolate mousse filling with fresh strawberries. Seriously yummy. For the hexagon tier, we’re using an ivory colored ribbon and then attaching a brooch with a little bling to coordinate with the cake topper and to pull in an element from my dress. (Don’t worry…that’s coming up soon!) The cake will be iced in white with a light ivory icing for the detailing, so it will have a tone on tone kind of look. If the awesome tasting cake and great design ideas weren’t enough, the shop owner then let us know that we would get a complimentary top tier on our 1 year anniversary. Uh…sign me up!

King Hippo and I were so pleased with the bakery all around that we finalized the cake order on the spot and then canceled our second tasting. I mean, yeah, tasting more cake would have been great, but we loved our cake experience and wanted to end on a high note. Plus, with appointments scheduled back to back to back, it was nice to have a little bit of a break during the day.

Once the cake order was done, I did some online searching for an appropriate (and inexpensive) brooch, and after just a couple of clicks I found this one for a mere $11 plus shipping:

Done and done.

Was your first cake tasting your last? Or did it take several tastings to find the perfect baker?

Ohhh wow, your cake is going to be AMAZING! I also want to use a brooch on my cake…so, tell me how this works. You attach the brooch to actual fabric ribbon and then that goes onto the cake? Or is the ribbon made of icing? I know, might be a dumb question but I really don’t know! :-/

I also love the false bottom tier idea! I wanted the look of a taller cake too but had not thought of that! I can’t wait to see how yours turns out.

Yum! Cake testing has to be one of the best parts of planning. I’m hoping to “test” every possible bakery I can!

@FMB: Not a dumb question at all! The brooch will attach to a fabric ribbon, and then the fabric ribbon wraps around the cake. I had the option to have the ribbon made out of fondant icing, but it was more expensive and I didn’t actually like the look of it as much, so I went with the fabric ribbon instead.

Yum! I love that you hate the word “creamy”. I hate the word “moist”…also often used for cake description. Looks great!

We used a tried-and-true baker from the next town over, it was just a matter of seeing if she could pull off the design we wanted—we’d only ever seen her birthday cakes. So we walked in, flipped through her photos, and wrote a deposit check. Took about twenty minutes.

Flaw: no actual cake tasting! :(

Yes our first tasting was our last. What a relief it was to nail down that vendor without much searching and weeding out. We used a fabric ribbon as well.

Your cake sounds so yummy! I also hate the word “creamy.” one of my friends calls ice cream “creamy goodness” just to bug me ;)

@MissCatherine: I actually hadn’t ever heard of (or thought of) having a brooch on a cake, but the bakery owner suggested it. I Googled “wedding cake with brooch” and found several examples.
