About Mrs. Starfish

Things Happen

October 26th, 2010 @ 5:32 pm by Mrs. Starfish

Sometimes things don’t go the way you plan on your wedding day….like Mr. Starfish may have dropped the sauce from his slider on my dress during cocktail hour, or one of our bridesmaids may have spilled a glass of wine on Mr. Starfish’s shirt during the first hour of the reception.

Things Happen : wedding newport reception Wed Cai

But things happen. You just get a Shout Wipe and clean it up, or you roll up your sleeves and keep on partying.

Things Happen : wedding newport reception Wine Unexpected things will happen on your wedding day. It’s all about how you react to it. The most valuable lesson I learned from Sister Starfish was to roll with the punches. Our mishaps were minor—hers, not so much. On the day of her wedding her videographer never showed up and he never called. She realized this on the day of, and instead of stressing about it and letting it ruin her day, she had the time of her life.

So this is just a reminder to all you future brides. If something minor or even major happens on your wedding day, don’t let it bring you down. You can’t control everything, but you can control how you handle the situation. So, relax and enjoy your wedding day. You only get to do it once (hopefully).

Married bees, did anything unexpected happen at your wedding? How did you handle it?

I can’t imagine that hush that went over after your mister spilled something on your dress. I’m very impressed with your keeping it coolness. And that is so crappy about your sisters videographer!

I had a wedding nightmare the other night that the videographer never showed up. I hope I would handle that situation in real life better than I did in my dream life. Good for Sister Starfish!

Some mishaps are easier to handle than others… but you’re absolutely right, your attitude in all cases in the only thing you can control!

It’s so great that you were able to keep your cool with something being spilled on your dress! It’s a really good reminder to other brides!

Great words of wisdom! We did have one mishap on our wedding day. We planned on taking my car from the wedding to the reception and from the reception to the honeymoon. After we finished taking pictures at the church, only my husband and I , my MOH and the photographer were left. My husband went to get the car and… it wouldn’t start!!! My mom had driven me to the wedding and she left the lights on (it was raining a bit). Instead of letting it phase us, we decided to just roll with the punches and the photographer got some great shots of my husband jump starting the car in his tux with my MOH and I laughing in the background. Things that seem stressful at the moment are often things you can laugh at in retrospect.

Wow, do you seriously have a picture of your husband spilling sauce on your wedding dress?? Priiiceless!! All kinds of weird stuff happened on our wedding day too! Great post, and great advice to brides-to-be!

This is such a great reminder. 2.5 weeks out, random memories of things that didn’t go quite right are creeping out of repression… like Who put the Manischevitz in the Kiddush cup!? I drove myself home… with my sister. Not my husband. That will be funny someday. But all said, nothing too terrible happened, and it was still the best day ever :)

I’m so happy to hear that you reacted so well! So many people can plan a million different scenarios, but I believe that it’s all in how you handle it!! Kudos to you Mrs. Starfish!! And of course congrats on the wedding!!

@PumpkinSpiceChai: That’s awesome that in the moment you could still laugh about it, and I’m sure the pictures are great! :)
@Mrs. Turtle: I know I started laughing when I saw our cousin got this on film. I love our videographers face in the back!
@Miss Thimble: I forgot half of the little things that went “wrong”, but they recently started creeping back for me too. I was just so happy the day of the wedding, nothing seemed to matter.
@Dainagonlori: Thank you! :)

I dropped turmeric chutney from the only appetiser I managed to eat onto the front of my dress, just above my breasts… just before we took pictures. I just laughed!

My stepmother in law was more panicked than I was, and thank goodness she was because she saved the dress with some washing up liquid and a sponge. You can’t really see the bright yellow turmeric stain in pictures (unless you look really closely!) Lesson learned: turmeric stains!

Haha - I had a very similar food experience. I was taking a picture with my new husband and one of our good friends, when I suddenly felt something very warm down my back.

Our friend had spilled 1/2 of his cup of coffee down the back of my wedding dress!!

I was honestly on too much of a wedding high to really care - but the picture is awesome! My friend is glancing down my back with a huge “WHOOPS” face on, while my face is crinkled up from the feeling of hot coffee, and my husband (of course oblivious) is grinning happily away.

Definitely best to keep calm and carry on!

Amen lady! I locked myself out of the house while we were supposed to be getting read (because I gave a BM ALL of my keys when she volunteered to wait at the salon with another BM whose hair was taking FOREVER while the rest of us went back to dress). Rather than freaking out and making my husband drive over his set of keys, I just used the time to relax until the other girls got there.

This has actually been my mantra throughout the planning process. My sister had the ultimate wedding day fiasco when her wedding was hurricaned out. She was supposed to have a nice, relaxing beach wedding but the venue was evacuated for the hurricane. She ended up getting married in her livingroom and the reception turned into a huge backyard BBQ. The only guests that could get there had been evacuated up from South Florida, but we had a great time and it was definitely memorable!
