Weddings on Film

October 26th, 2010 @ 2:00 pm by Ms. Sloth

Let’s do a little logic problem, shall we?

Most wedding movies are chick flicks. I personally loathe most chick flicks. Therefore, I loathe most wedding movies.

To be fair, I haven’t seen that many because I tend to stay away from them. But I’ve seen a handful, and I’m not impressed.

I found My Best Friend’s Wedding to be an ugly movie, where we were supposed to root for a woman who selfishly attempted to break up her friend’s wedding. Father of the Bride was harmless but way too sugary sweet for me. Runaway Bride makes a joke of commitment. American Wedding was just another excuse to make fart jokes.*

Most other wedding movies, well, I have no desire to see. I found the premise of Bride Wars so offensive that I vowed never to watch it. And I just have zero interest in some other wedding movies, e.g., The Wedding Planner, 27 Dresses, The Wedding Date, Betsy’s Wedding.

But there are a few wedding movies (or movies that prominently feature a wedding) that I am a fan of:

1. Rachel Getting Married - I loved this movie because, while the wedding was the central event around which everything occurred, it’s not really a “wedding movie.” It’s more of a family melodrama with fantastic acting. The wedding itself is my all-time favorite movie wedding. It’s unique and has countless different cultural factors. I wish I’d been invited to Rachel’s wedding.

2. The Wedding Singer - This movie makes my list because, well, it’s funny and cute and cheestastically ’80s. That’s really it.

3. Steel Magnolias - Yes, this movie is the queen of all chick flicks, but I love it. The whole wedding sequence in the beginning of the film just makes me smile. I love the chaotic preparations, the way the entire town attends, the silly dancing, just everything. The whole sequence is emotional and joyful and funny and loud—just the way a wedding is.

What’s your opinion on wedding movies? Do you have any favorites?

*Don’t get me wrong—I like a good fart joke. That is, a good fart joke.

AMEN!
I’m the exact same way with wedding movies, and I’m also not a fan of *most* chick flicks. I was just thinking of The Wedding Singer and how I’d love to watch it right now. Netflix ahoy!

“My Coluh’s are Blush and Bashful”

I’m obsessed with Steel Magnolias. Break-up? Watch it. Big fight with mom? Watch it. On TBS Saturday Night? Watch it. With Haagen Daz.

… Does The Godfather count..? haha One of my personal faves.

I love all three of those movies! My all time favourite wedding movie though is Love Actually even though I know it is about so much more than the wedding.

Ahhh! I love wedding movies. One of my favorite weddings in a movie (which happens to be more of a Christmas movie) is Love Actually.

The only funny part of Bride Wars was when the planner at the Plaza told them that until women get married, it’s like they’re dead, and they actually come alive after they get married. Then she points to her “frumpy” assistant and says, “For instance, Angela will die dead.” Other than that the movie is terrible and awful and you should probably never, ever watch it.

And because I am from the South, whenever an acquaintance asks me about my wedding, they have to throw in, “Are your colors blush and bashful?” Har har.

I’m with you 100%, which makes me think you’d like Four Weddings and a Funeral. Do you?

“Rachel Getting Married” was the first thought that popped into my head when I read the first couple paragraphs of your post. What a fantastic film.

@MsBunting: @ohheavenlyday:
I am possibly the only female on the planet who doesn’t like “Love Actually.”

@Wehaf: You know, I haven’t seen that movie in so long that I can’t remember it at ALL. Maybe I should try it again.

@plantains! I am with you on Love Actually! I love that move sooo much that I wished for that same recessional in my wedding! It would have been amazing, if only we had musically inclined friends to surprise us. For some reason though I always clump that one into Christmas movies. I am a huge fan of Father of the Bride, but that is because I grew up on that and watched it soooooo many times! I do love “I Love You Man” because it cracks me up to see wedding planning from the dudes perspective.

Bride Wars is an embarrassing excuse of a movie (they filmed it in Boston, which I love, but really, it’s a horrible script). I LOVVVVEEE The Wedding Singer, though!

Heeehee, I’m a total sucker for cheesy wedding movies, the worse it is, the more I like it! I am loving some of these suggestions tho, Monsoon Wedding was amazing! And all three of yours were excellent choices!

I love the wedding in 16 Candles, where the bride is completely wasted on muscle relaxers thanks to menstrual cramps…

Love Steel Magnolias.. There is one line in Steel Magnolia’s about the mayor’s wife dancing: “Like two pigs fighting under a blanket….”

I re-watched My Best Friend’s Wedding over this past summer, for the first time in years and years and years and years. I remembered thinking it was kind of a cutesy, fun movie and put it on for some mindless entertainment while I worked on invitations. UM, WTF?! That movie is completely insane! There is so much wrong about it, including not only the fact that Julia Roberts’ character is AWFUL, but the guy she’s chasing is also highly questionable. There is a scene where she tries on his fiancee’s wedding band, and it gets stuck, and so he SLIPS HER FINGER IN HIS MOUTH and sensually slides the band off with his teeth. OH HELL NO!
