To Garter or Not to Garter

October 27th, 2010 @ 4:26 pm by Ms Cheetah

We are not a very traditional couple, and we want to get as much time on the dance floor as possible, so we are choosing to forgo a few traditions, including the bouquet and garter tosses. So I won’t need a toss bouquet…does that also mean I won’t need a garter? Part of me is fine with that—hey it’s one less thing to worry about (and make/purchase). But another part of me is like this:

(Except with a cheetah and a garter. But I do kind of also want a donut now…must not blog on an empty stomach.)

There is something so romantic, bridal, and sexy about a garter, and it would be really fun knowing it was there under my wedding gown. Yet if we aren’t doing the whole garter-toss thing, I’m not sure it makes sense for me to wear one. Plus I have this irrational fear of having the garter fall down while I’m dancing, getting caught on my foot, causing me to trip head first into the dessert table while simultaneously ripping my dress in half, and flashing everyone. Am I the only one who has outlandish wedding fears like that? Because I have a bunchand about half of them involve me accidentally flashing our wedding guests…

I am still considering a garter, but maybe I should just save it for the wedding night. There’s a chance I might try to whip something up on my sewing machine, but I’m also eyeing these beauties on Etsy:

Or perhaps a little cheetah print. (Zebra and Jaguar—there are lots of garters in your prints, too…)

Are you wearing a garter? Will you be tossing it?

No garter or bouquet toss for us, but I love your cheetah garter idea. And you can always wear it and just show it off to your husband that night. :)

All of these are SO lovely! We are NOT doing a garter toss. My garter is for his eyes only!

We’re doing an Anniversary dance instead of a bouquet and garter toss, but I still want a garter!

I will wear one for fun but definitely not going to do a garter toss… I think they are so awkward.

I did the garter toss. I had 1st purchased a cheapy one from Michaels. It was super cute and it was the one I was going to wear. I had a garter set as well. So, The cheapy one slid down my leg just from walking across the room before my dress was on. Put the garter set on and it was a gift from Nordy’s. It was really pretty, comfy, and both of them stayed up until the toss and the second one stayed on until after the reception was through! So, just make sure if you do wear one that you try it on first and walk around with it because if it slips or is scratchy it will just bother you.

I’m not doing a garter toss… but I think I want a garter just for the sake of having a bridal garter!

Totally did the garter toss and loved it! Bought 2 of the same so that I could keep one and the man who caught it (one of my gay guy friends, naturally) could keep the other. Yes, it was blue!

I didn’t do a garter toss, but bought a $30 custom one from Etsy. I put it on, and had my MOH take it off at the church because it was bugging me. Not to mention we were so…. tired… at the end of the night, my new husband didn’t even notice my fancy Victoria’s Secret “Bride” underwear, so he probably wouldn’t have noticed the garter either!

Those are so cute it’s making me reconsider opting out of doing a garter toss!

For some reason I just don’t like garters… or at least they are so completely not-me that I can’t imagine wearing one. I also think it would drive me nuts to have a garter on my leg. And I hate the garter toss and the whole rummaging around under the dress. So, um, no, there won’t be a garter. :)

I’ve got my garter, but I’m not sure if we’re doing the toss yet!

Ah, the garter. I had a garter and a toss garter made by an awesome Etsy seller. What I didn’t even think about until the actual day of the wedding was that my dress was so fitted that you could see the outline of the garters underneath. whoops!
So I would definitely keep that in mind if you actually plan on wearing it that day. Maybe that will help you to decide which one to go with.
We ended up not even doing a garter toss, but we did do a bouquet toss with a twist… I invited all the ladies up on the floor and attached a gift card to Bath and Body Works. Who doesn’t love going there?

@Miss Kermie: I think I might have that same problem too! If I get a garter, I think I’ll just save it for after the wedding!

One of my friends got married in June and she didn’t do a garter toss, but wore a garter anyway for the sake of how bridal it is. She didn’t have any problems with it falling down or anything.

I have had a friend offer to lend me her garter for either my something old or something borrowed, but it is under the explicit instructions that it is not to be tossed! We aren’t doing a bouquet or a garter toss either. We only have a couple single guests so it doesn’t make a lot of sense. I am touched that my friend offered to lend me hers!

I can’t help but laugh at your flashing fear…too funny, and a great description of the fear! Don’t think we will do a garter toss either, but I still want one. What other time will we be able to wear such a garment?! Go for it!!

Love the Twigs and Honey garter! I skipped it because we weren’t doing a toss and I didn’t think I needed one more thing to make me hot or itch under my dress.
