Mrs. Barrettes, Tumon, Guam/Napa, CA Age and Occupation: 29, Dancer Fiance's Age and Occupation: 31, Licensed Building Contractor Engagement Date: November 16, 2008 Wedding Date: October 2010 Venue: V. Sattui Winery About Me: I'm an East Coast girl, living on a tiny little island in the Pacific, twirling, leaping, and shimmy-ing my way through life, and now, wedding planning! I'm equal parts nerdy and cool... okay, mostly nerdy. I love satin bows, red lipstick, black & white graphic anything, the shine of sequins and the sound of a champagne "pop". My favorite books are The Portrait of a Lady, by Henry James, and Tender is the Night, by F. Scott Fitzgerald. I can also conjure a pretty good Patronus Charm. I started my appreciation for good red wine while traveling on the high seas, and it's only fitting that my passion for wine drinking led me to my Napa-bred honey. We bonded over bottles of Cabernet on my oceanfront porch and haven't looked back since. We're sealing the deal at a winery in the Napa Valley on a 'perfect ten' of a day!

Lessons on Lashes

October 27th, 2010 @ 4:43 pm by Mrs. Barrettes

I have worn eyelashes almost every day in the past 2 years. Every night, in my dressing room, I’d whip out the lash glue, and apply a full strip (usually my trusty ol’ Mac 5s).

When I needed a smaller lash, or just a pop, I’d apply Ardells or other drug store brands. Lashes are awesome and they do wonders for your face.

So as I sit back and look at pictures from our wedding, I can’t help but think to myself, “Why aren’t you wearing lashes?”

Lessons on Lashes : wedding makeup napa tutorial Picture01 Picture01

It never occurred to me so plainly that I just didn’t think they were up for it. Have you ever gotten sweat in your eye when you had eye makeup on? Know what happens when you wipe your eye? Mascara and liner failure. I think I must have subconsciously remembered previous experiences. When the glue from your falsies gets wet, the eyelash comes off. Sometimes just a corner pops up. You have to take 5 minutes to either jimmy it back into place, or do the darn thing all over again.

“Use more glue,” you say. Use too much glue to apply and you have a sloppy mess.

Lash gluing is an art. Either you’ve got it, or you don’t. I’ve usually got it, but on my wedding day I didn’t feel like testing the system.

Can you imagine my emotional-craziness and propensity to tears, mixed with false eyelashes? Sounds like a recipe for a small bridal meltdown. I remember talking with John about perhaps applying singlets on the outer corners, but then dismissing the idea for fear of teary eye. Imagine how pretty those photos would have turned out with our happy faces and me with a melting lash. Cue the horror!

So when I go to scold myself in the future over not wearing lashes on our wedding day, I’ll try to remember that I was averting a small makeup predicament. Cover Girl Lash Blast Volume, in waterproof, did the trick.

But for you controlled criers out there, a few tips:

  1. Practice, practice, practice. Don’t use your wedding day as the first day you try lashes. If you do decide to do this, be warned.
  2. Don’t use as much glue as you would think. A thin coat does the job. If you need more hold, let that thin coat dry a little and apply a 2nd coat on top of it.
  3. Let the glue dry on the lash a little before you apply. I blow on mine. You want the glue tacky, not wet. Also, I’ve found the black glue to work better than the white stuff.
  4. Don’t be afraid to cut the ends of the lash. If you have smaller eyes, cut the lash to your lash line. Nothing looks faker than lashes that don’t fit your eye line.
  5. Apply your lashes after your shadow and liner. The lash should be the finishing touch. Don’t apply eyeshadow after, or the shadow will fall in the curve of the lash.

(Here is a shot of the same makeup, with and without lashes. Makes a difference!)

Good luck with your lashes! And someone please tell me that it’s okay that I didn’t do more of a show makeup look for my wedding. I’m having a hard time wrestling with the fact that I went “less is more”!

I think your make up looks absolutely beautiful on your wedding day. I can only hope mine looks just as great. And if you were worried about the lashes coming off or getting gross because of happy tears, I think you totally made the right decision. You’re naturally beautiful and I think your make up compliments your dress really well in the pictures.

You look absolutely beautiful in your weeding picture because you look natural. In my opinion, you made the right decision. Falsies may be right for other times, but your wedding wasn’t the time for a malfunction :)

Your post couldn’t have come at a better time! Tell me why - for the first time in my life - I bought fake lashes Monday with the intention of wearing them on SYTTD!

After chopping the lashes down to a more natural length and fullness, I practically laid my face on the mirror to try to glue them on, and they would NOT stick! It about drove me insane! I was getting glue all over my eyes, but I couldn’t wash them because I had all my other makeup on!

So embaressing, but true, I ended up abandoning the idea and going lashless. I was totally annoyed with myself b/c I had glue still on parts of my right eye!

Ahh!

I got eyelash extensions because I couldn’t get my head around the idea of wearing false lashes and it was the best beauty decision I made!!

I LOVE fake lashes! I’m just OK at putting them on…would love to wear them more often, if they weren’t so expensive! Come to think of it, I bet I could buy them in bulk online, right? Off to hunt…

I was just thinking before I read the last part that I was glad you did more of a natural makeup look instead of your show makeup…I think it makes you look more you. And you looked amazing on your wedding day. But you are so gorgeous the makeup amount probably didn’t even matter.

As for the lashes, they scare me. But sometimes I have thought about giving a go…but I am glad I didn’t experiment with them on my wedding day. They would have fell right off with all the tears.

I’m wearing fake lashes for Halloween (the one day a year I always wear them for some reason) and this came in VERY handy.

P.S. I liked your “less is more” look on the big day. You looked fresh, and bridal, and awesome.

I love fakies. I don’t get to wear them in my day-to-day life so I love to get a chance to wear them. You looked so stunning on your wedding day that I hope you don’t regret it for too long.

has anyone done lash extensions? I have a few friends who splurged on them for their weddings and I am DYING to do them for mine! falsies look without the worry of smudge…sounds perfect to me (although they are not cheap, I know!)

if anyone has experience with the extensions (particularly in NYC and can recommend a salon for them!) I’d love to hear your feedback =)

I think you looked perfect for your wedding day! You look gorgeous either way, my friend.

I wear falsies every blessed day of my life (very short lashes+blonde coloring+constant performing), but I don’t need them to be so dramatic, so I use the individual lashes instead of the strips. I never have a problem with them coming off during the day. Maybe those would work for future emotional events where you feel naked without extra lash oomph? :)

Me too! Well, I wore eyelash extensions almost every single day for the past 2.5 years but realized last month that my poor lashes were weak and falling out from the glue and excessive fake eyelash use (did you come across this problem?) so I opted for eyelash extensions. I don’t love the extensions but I don’t have to worry about glue and falsies for at least one more month. :)

1. your makeup was flawless in your wedding photos. and you look stunning!

2. i wore lashes on my wedding day and was a hot mess of tears. but the lashes stayed right in place and other than my red puffy eyes, you wouldn’t have even known i shed a single tear.

i guess it all comes down to finding the perfect makeup artist that really knows their stuff!

I love wearing false lashes for specials occasions, on our wedding day I wore two layers of them!

But I think you look just beautiful without them too!

Just tried false lashes for this first time today (make-up trial). I love the drama of your “show lashes” but not for a wedding. Good call on skipping the extra lashes; it’s a stress-free option that showcases your natural beauty.

@Miss Texas: Good for you!!! I’ve never been able to keep them on when my eyes get wet! Your makeup artist has a good secret! =)

Thank you all for your kind words about my decision to go natural. Hopefully I’ll like it too when I finally see the pro shots!
