My mother gave me some “advice” the other day. See, every once in a while, she comes up with something that I “have” to do or “shouldn’t” do. The other day’s something was telling the guests that they don’t have to wear a jacket.

See, our wedding is going to be very casual. The groomsmen aren’t going to be wearing jackets (although Mr. S will be), so Dear Mom thinks that we’ll have to let the guests know on the invitation that there will be no jacket required.
I’m against this for several reasons:
1. Our invitation design (which I’ll show you at some point) is very specific. There is no room for those words on the invite.
2. I’m dating myself with this one, but Phil Collins, you guys. Believe me, there is a (very, very small) place in my heart for his craptacular music, but there is no place for it at our wedding. And I can’t even think the words “no jacket required” without getting some bland ’80s soft rock stuck in my head.
3. I don’t think it’s necessary. Our wedding guests are, for the most part, a savvy group. I think that they’ll figure out that our daytime botanical-garden wedding is not black tie. But I say that if they show up in a jacket and decide they don’t want to wear it, well, take the damned thing off! They might be happy they brought it anyway; it might get chilly at night in mid-May.
Did any of your family members give you any etiquette tips that you didn’t want to follow?
