No Jacket Required?

October 27th, 2010 @ 9:32 am by Ms. Sloth

My mother gave me some “advice” the other day. See, every once in a while, she comes up with something that I “have” to do or “shouldn’t” do. The other day’s something was telling the guests that they don’t have to wear a jacket.

See, our wedding is going to be very casual. The groomsmen aren’t going to be wearing jackets (although Mr. S will be), so Dear Mom thinks that we’ll have to let the guests know on the invitation that there will be no jacket required.

I’m against this for several reasons:

1. Our invitation design (which I’ll show you at some point) is very specific. There is no room for those words on the invite.

2. I’m dating myself with this one, but Phil Collins, you guys. Believe me, there is a (very, very small) place in my heart for his craptacular music, but there is no place for it at our wedding. And I can’t even think the words “no jacket required” without getting some bland ’80s soft rock stuck in my head.

3. I don’t think it’s necessary. Our wedding guests are, for the most part, a savvy group. I think that they’ll figure out that our daytime botanical-garden wedding is not black tie. But I say that if they show up in a jacket and decide they don’t want to wear it, well, take the damned thing off! They might be happy they brought it anyway; it might get chilly at night in mid-May.

Did any of your family members give you any etiquette tips that you didn’t want to follow?

I’m dating myself too girl, and I LOVE it! I think you should just scan that image of Phil Collins and throw it in the invite. OK, kidding, but that would be rad.

There are etiquette tips being thrown left and right these days, I say go with your gut. PS–I’m now singing “Against All Odds” to myself…

Now I have a picture of Mike Tyson singing “In the Air Tonight” in my head. :)

Thank you, hive, for making me feel like I’m not the only old lady out here!

Emily Post says that one should not put any indication of formality of dress on the invitation… you can always tell your Mom that!

Hahahah! You just reminded me to add Phil Collins to my do-not-play list.

I kind of love Phil Collins in all his cheesy glory (a song or two makes it into the fold when my iPhone is on shuffle). Just put dress code on the website!

Okay, I am going to be listening to ‘best of Phil Collins’ today! And I agree with you, if they come and they feel uncomfortable, they will take off their jacket. On your invites, it states where it will be held. It’s a garden, they will dress appropriately.

Do you have a wedding website? You could offer to put a line or two about “casual dress” on the guest information page to placate your mum.

I’m happy to hear that you’re thinking of GMs without jackets, and groom with - we were trying to figure out if that would work!

My mom won’t shut up about her advice. It’s actually pretty ridiculous!

Glad to hear it isn’t just my mom that pops in her ‘very important’ advice. I think it is the generation gap - different things are important to the 50+ crowd than to my FH and I.

We are planning a jacketed groom and jacketless GM, too. My mom doesn’t give advice, she just gives “the look.” :-)

1. If by craptastic you mean amazing, right?
2. They can take the jacket off. As mentioned previously, it would be great if you had a wedding website you could post more info on about the dress.

Nopers! Since we were the first wedding (of the siblings) and mom isn’t big on wedding rules she wouldn’t have know the difference.

I completely agree. And like you said, it might get chilly and they might need to use their jacket.

One, I love you.
Two, I love “…but Phil Collins, you guys.”
Three, I love your mom.
Four, I don’t think you need to listen to her. Do like these other ladies say and let the dress code spread by word of mouth or on your site.

This is one I’ve never heard before. If she is really worried about it, maybe she can just spread the word by mouth. :)
