Hand Painted Favors

October 28th, 2010 @ 3:48 pm by Mrs. Meerkat

Remember a couple weeks ago when I showed you the vintage airmail favor boxes and place cards I made?

Everyone kept asking me if there is something in them. Yes, there will be, and that something arrived in the mail this past weekend!!

The idea is to give each guest an ornament favor with a little of the sand from the beach we are getting married on. This way our guests have a great souvenir of our wedding and their trip that they get to hang on their Christmas trees year after year. Plus, with our wedding being just a few days before Christmas, it just seemed like the right favor to give everyone.

We had St Clair Creations on Etsy do the hard part and hand paint a beach scene on the back. And I “borrowed” the idea from our very own Mrs. Corn to fill them with a little sand from the beach we are getting married on. I filled the above photo with some sand from home but with the sand from the beach they will look more like Mrs. Corn’s ornaments:

The only thing I am not 100% sure about is if I should remove the text on the front. I was the bozo who told St Clair Creations to put the name on the front. I had no idea the picture would be so beautiful I wouldn’t want to cover it up! If I remove the text on the front I would order a custom printed ribbon with our names and date to use as the hanger.

So what do you think? Should I leave them as is or remove the text and order a custom printed ribbon?

I think the text looks fine, but I agree it is sad to cover up the pretty painted background. I think the ribbon idea, or maybe a cute tag would be good!

I would remove the text, and do the ribbon. Maybe you can put the text on the back of it, so its hidden from view but when someone flips it over they can tell exaclty where it came from?

So, I have a question for the brides that do Christmas themed weddings (with Christmas card-like invites, ornament favors, etc):

Do you not have guests of different faith coming? Or is it just expected that they would not mind?

(Genuinely curious, as this would not have occured to me prior to meeting my husband, who is Jewish. I grew up in a scarily conservative Christian part of the country.)

@crayfish: I know for certain that all of our guests celebrate Christmas. They are not all Christan though.

In all honesty the ornament has more to do with how much Mr. M. and I love Christmas. Its more to us about the spirit of the holiday. Not the commercialized version but that of family, loving, caring about your fellow man, etc. All our guests know this about us. :D

I agree about taking the text off the front (because I think it looks classier without it) and then ordering a ribbon or else putting your logo on a travel tag or something and tying it to the ornament. Either way, adorable idea!

I think the favors are more likely to be taken home and loved if they don’t have the text on the front of them. But that’s a generic statement that doesn’t account for the fact that you know the people attending your wedding and I don’t. ;)

So my real advice is to go with whatever your gut says.

I love this! It is so cute - and I like the ribbon &/or tag idea. Who doesn’t like a warm beach-y scene on a cold winter night? :)

@Encore: LOL My guts is saying what you just wrote which is why I was hoping posting it out to the hive would give me a better take on it. ;)

I agree with @Encore, if I were a guest (which obvs I’m not… but my opinion :) I would be much more likely to use and keep it if it did not have the text.

I love the ornament!

@crayfish: My wedding is definitely Christmas themed, but Mr. Knitting and I aren’t the slightest bit religious. Christmas for us is a holiday that is about spending time with our loved ones, and while I realize that for many people this holiday is about the birth of Christ, we (and our families) have a much more secular view of the holiday. I think this more secular view of Christmas is much more common in Toronto than in the more conservative parts of the states.

That being said, I would have no problem being a guest at a wedding that was centred on a another religion’s holiday. I don’t personally celebrate Diwali, but would be excited to attend a Diwali wedding! I thought about sending my sister’s Jewish parents in law invites that did not mention Christmas, but then realized I would not be the slightest bit bothered by receiving a Hanukkah themed wedding invite (although I’m not sure that anyone would do that!).

I think this is a nice favor idea only if you are 100% sure everyone you invited celebrates Christmas/has a Christmas tree (which you are). Otherwise, I would be worried that I would offend someone.

That is a great idea! I’ve never seen a Christmas ornament favor but its definitely something your guests will enjoy!

Even for those without Christmas trees I think this is a very pretty idea. I doesn’t even really shout “christmas” to me at all. In fact, you don’t need a tree to display these. I have seem some really cool tabletop holders that are made to show off anytime of ornament.
So personally, I think its a pretty momento of the wedding and trip! I love your idea ^_^ oh, and for the original question, I love the ribbon or tag idea.

I like the ribbon idea. I think it’s a bit more understated. I’d be way more likely to put it on my tree that way.
