About Ms. Sloth

The Minimoon

October 28th, 2010 @ 2:16 pm by Ms. Sloth

Mr. S and I have discussed honeymooning ad nauseum, and we’ve determined that it’s going to be pretty much impossible to take a big honeymoon right after the wedding. We just won’t have the money.

But we’re sure as hell going to need a vacation after the wedding. So we’re looking to take a long weekend somewhere close after the wedding, and then take the real honeymoon a few months later.

We haven’t done any planning yet, but we’ve narrowed down a few options. We wanted our mini-moon to be:

  1. Cheap. We will have just dropped an insane amount of money on the wedding itself. No need to break the bank even more.
  2. Driving Distance from Philly. See above re: cheap. If we don’t have to fly, we’ll save money. So we’d like to be able to drive there in about eight hours or less.
  3. Relaxing. Our wedding will be (I hope) awesome, but I’m sure it’ll also be stressful as hell. We want a vacation that will allow us to unwind.
  4. Delicious. When we travel, our favorite thing to do is eat well. We love good restaurants, so our mini-moon destination needs to have a good food scene. Wineries are a plus.

So, with that said, we’ve narrowed down our trip options to the following destinations:

Ogunquit, Maine. This is about six hours from Philly and about an hour and a half north of Boston. We stayed here for a few nights last summer and fell in love. It’s an adorable seaside town—the perfect combination of quaint and hip. The B&B we stayed in was like a resort, and we’d stay there again. The only thing is, do we want to go to someplace we’ve already been?

The Finger Lakes area, New York. I’ve never been to the Finger Lakes, but we drove through the area on the way to Montreal, and it was stunning. I’d love to tour the local wineries and just soak up some glorious scenery.

Cape May, New Jersey. Philly is so close to the Jersey Shore, but in the seven years that the boy and I have been together, we’ve only gone to the beach together once. I found out that day that Mr. S hates the beach. But Cape May isn’t just your average Jersey Shore town. It’s historic and quaint, with adorable shops and gorgeous B&Bs.

Assateague Island, Maryland/Virginia. A beach island with wild ponies. Need I say more? I’m just not sure how good the food scene is here.

Washington, D.C. No, this isn’t a quaint little vacation spot, but there’s a lot to do for free, and I’m sure we’ll eat some amazing food.

I’m sure we’ll come up with a lot more options before we’re ready to book. The hardest part will be deciding on just one.

Are you going to take a mini-moon, or are you just going to take one big honeymoon after your wedding?

maybe combine assateague and dc? that way you get the relaxation of the beach and all of the free things to do and good food in dc.

Well since Im biased I say either DC or Assateague!!!! Assateague is gorgeous but there really isnt too much to do! DC is great but definitely not relaxing! I think for the best vacation I would either choose Cape May or Maine.

I minimooned it too! We went to Asheville, NC which I think is too far for you, but they do have an awesome food and art scene there, plus the Biltmore is worth seeing!

Assateague is beautiful…but I have to say the last time I camped there it was buggy as all get out (BUT if you Bed & Breakfasting it and not at a campsite, you’ll be better off I’m sure.) I was traumatized by that camping experience though and will only be camping in the fall from now on. YEESH the bugs! Everywhere! zomg.

We are taking a minimoon as well, since we are getting married so close Christmas, we figured we take the long honeymoon after the new year. We are going to Vegas for 4 days. The flights and packages leaving from CT were cheap. Plus we are also foodies! We have made reservations at all of the restaurants we want to eat at when we are there, LOL!

I live in MD and just got back from Assateague Island. It’s close enough to the OC Boardwalk for fun there, and the food is amazing…. but there isn’t a lot of uniqueness to it. The food is probably the same or close to what you have in Philly, but then again it is a touristy area, so food choices may be different.

If food is your thing Asseteague is NOT the way to go. I actually went here for my honeymoon as we had very little money and my Uncle owns a beach house which he let us use for only the cleaning fee.
It is absolutely beautiful BUT the food selection leaves much to be desired. Luckily, we are not food buffs so we had a blast!!
Happy planning :)

Ok, so you seem like you love indie, up-and-coming things, so I have 2 words for you:

PORTLAND, MAINE

It’s also about an hour and a half north of Boston, and seriously - the food is to. die. for. PM me if you want recs. It is now known as a foodie draw, and it has really great history, and is beautiful! It has a great eclectic artsy vibe. And there are some cool, affordable, unique places to stay. It’s our “go to” for a quick weekend out of town when we just can’t take the city anymore!

You guys could go to St. Michaels, it’s on the Eastern Shore of MD close to Assateague Island and it’s such a beautiful quaint little town!

I think I would choose Maine, NY, or DC (more for the food for DC). I used to live near Cape May (about 20 mins) and you may run out of things to do if you are not beach people. Same thing with Assateague- I’m from MD and we always used to go to Assateague for the day during our vacations to Ocean City. But I bet you will have fun anywhere! What about Boston?

They all sound like good choices! I close to the finger lakes and it is such a gorgous place! There is so much to do and see. Plus if you go to Seneca lake there are a lot of winerys and bed and breakfast places to stay.

We’ve run into some surprisingly fun restaurants in that little area in the mountains where Maryland and West Virginia meet. Garrett County, Maryland is just gorgeous, and great for hiking. Deep Creek Winery is admittedly not one of Maryland’s best (IMHO), but they make their own vanilla, and that’s awesome.

Have you looked into Burlington, VT? We went there for a weekend trip and stayed at an adorable B&B. The town is great, there are some amazing restaurants, and it’s all so beautiful and quaint. Highly recommend.

We love the Finger Lakes! It is gorgeous and there are hundreds of wineries to choose from! Plus, there are always other activities going on like festivals and such.

Finger Lakes!!! Spent an amazing weekend at a gorgeous B&B called Halsey House a few years ago. There is a gorgeous state park nearby with really pretty waterfalls. It’s a super romantic place :)

I was just thinking of other potential spots (not that I don’t think yours aren’t wonderful - I would personally choose DC. Stay in hotel and veg or have about 1 million options of things to do.) Other options may be:
Cape Cod, MA
Stowe/Burlington, Vermont (I am biased - that is where I grew up and it is soooooo beautiful in the Spring!)
Niagara Falls, NY (Canada side is nicer)
Adirondack State Park, NY

SOOOOO many options!!! Let us know what you decide on! Any idea where the biggie-moon will be!? (is biggie-moon even a thing?? prob not.!)
