We’re Not Resort People

October 30th, 2010 @ 11:20 am by Ms. Sloth

I’ve already shared our mini-moon options, but we’re hoping to take a big honkin’ REAL honeymoon about four to six months after the wedding. And fantasizing about that is much more fun than planning a close weekend trip.

As I said before, Mr. S hates the beach. I don’t mind the beach, but I can think of many places I’d rather go. And while we’re big fans of the idea of all-inclusive, we’d much rather make our own lodging plans and then be able to explore wherever we go for food, drink, and recreation.

So tropical resorts are out. We are just not resort people. We might consider going on a tropical vacation if we can get a private rental (i.e., a villa in the islands or a jungle hut in Costa Rica), but that’s not even really at the top of our list.

Here is the list of places we’re considering for our honeymoon.

Spain. Mr. S went to Spain when he was younger on a school trip, but that was forever ago. And I’ve never been there, but I’ve been dying to go. I’m kind of obsessed with Barcelona, but I’d also like to see Madrid and other parts of southern Spain. An old friend of ours owns a bar on the beach in a tiny town in the southernmost part of the country. He said that on a clear day, you can almost see Morocco across the water! So I think that Spain is my top choice, but I think the boy is maybe hoping to go somewhere he’s never been.

Greece. I’ve always wanted to see the Greek Islands, especially Santorini and Mykonos. I can picture us sitting at a restaurant on the cliffs, drinking ouzo and eating something delicious. Maybe if we travel the islands, we can also go to Dubrovnik, Croatia, which is another place we’d like to see.

Buenos Aires, Argentina. Here’s a little fact: Mr. S and I were planning on going to Buenos Aires this past April. And then last fall we decided to get married instead, and we cancelled the trip to put the trip money toward the wedding. But I’m kind of dying to see the city, to go to tango parlors, to go wine tastings in Patagonia, to just wander around and explore the city.

Phuket, Thailand. This is one beach destination that Mr. S and I can both agree on. We’re both dying to see Asia at some point, and we’d love to lounge on a Thai beach and eat and drink until we can’t move. It’s expensive to get to Phuket from Philly, but once you’re there, everything is incredibly cheap. So this is a major option.

Those are really our top options, but there have been a lot of other places thrown around in conversation, too. Scotland, Germany, Prague, Japan, Switzerland, New Zealand, and Alaska are all contenders as well.

Are you going on a resort honeymoon, or did you choose another route for your trip?

OMG Barcelona!! GO!

Croatia - put it on the list, it’s unbelievable and relatively affordable since it’s not on the Euro!

My friends just went to Santorini and Mykonos and LOVED it. The food was amazing and people gather to watch the sunsets every night…the pictures were gorgeous!

LOVE Barcelona, loved Greece! We’re going to a resort in Brazil — at first I figured it’d be a chance for the boy to do some sightseeing in Salvador, Bahia, or another historic area of the country (he’s seen Rio already), but since we’re going on our honeymoon the day after the wedding, we chose relaxation instead. If we were going 6 months later, we’d definitely be going the touristy route!

We’re talking about going to the Algarve in Portugal. It’s supposed to be a beautiful beach town.

Oh Scotland is magic!!! Edinburgh is straight out of a fairytale. And the highlands are GORGEOUS! Fly into London, do London and then take a train to Edinburgh. Or make it a road trip (maybe 7 or 8 hours between the two cities).

Of all your top choices, it sounds like Thailand and Greece are your front runners.

Oh, Greece was so good. So so so good. Out of your other options, I’d love to do Thailand next!

As of right now we are planning on renting a house somewhere on Hawaii but the UK was definitely in consideration (FH is in the same clan as Sean Connery, we might have gone over during the clan meeting). Norway would have been a great option so he can meet my cousins who can’t come to the wedding but it’s so expensive there!

My cousin was going to go to NZ for her honeymoon before her dog’s ACL tore - but the pictures she took the first time she went are amazing.

Edinburgh is amazing. So is Switzerland. You should check out Zermatt if you haven’t already. It offers both relaxation and adventure. We are thinking of going to Greece for our honeymoon too. I have always wanted to do a little island hopping there :)

wow such great options! I will say this… I’ve been (in Europe) to england, scotland, france, italy, spain, monaco, and vatican city (if you consider those last two destinations)… and Barcelona is by far my FAVORITE place in the world. Unbelievable.

That being said, Greece is next on my list for European destinations. Tough choice!!

We did Southern Spain for our honeymoon and loved every second of it…the food, the history, the wine, the people… such a fun trip! All of your options sound great though…you can’t go wrong!

Spain is gorgeous. There are tons of romantic places on the southern coast, and seville is such a great city. But I also love Buenos Aires. The city is so much fun–and really affordable. And you could spend a few days somewhere in the countryside at an estancia for some romance as well.

My fi and I are planning on going to Thailand for our honeymoon. We are either going to fly out of Newark or Philly. Yes it is very expensive but we are lucky enough to have enough frequent flyer miles to cove the airfare. Can’t wait to hear what you choose!

This is a great list. We’re going to go to Greece since my fiance has never been there despite studying ancient Greek and classics. I went once before, but I was alone and stayed on the mainland, so I am dying to go again with company.

But, man… those all sound great.

Without a doubt, Buenos Aires is one of my favorite cities (and I’ve been to quite a few in Europe and South America). BA over Barcelona, for sure.

We are like honeymoon soul mates! Haha. My husband and I are NOT resorters either! Not sure why, I can def see the appeal of the all-inclusive tropical resort. However, since we are not tropical resorters, we made a list of our ideal locations- pretty much the exact list you mentioned except with the addition of Ireland! No matter where you pick, it’s going to be AMAZING!

My best friend grew up in Bangkok with her family and absolutely loved it. Everything is really, really, really cheap and the culture is so unique.

The only thing with Bangkok is that you’ll definitely need to take public transportation everywhere. Renting your own car is possible, but very, very risky. Thai people are not known for their safe driving and according to my friend, even her parents only drove when they HAD to and they lived there for 10 years. :)

We’re taking a meditterranen cruise - Italy, Corsica, France, Barcelona - all are on our list! It’s a bit pricey, but we don’t have to worry about international flights (comes with the cruise), being stuck in on area, or moving stuff around.
