Mrs. Panther, Atlanta GA/Westport CT Age and Occupation: 24, Web Writer Fiance's Age and Occupation: 25, Music Recording Engineer Engagement Date: March 13, 2010 Wedding Date: July 2011 Venue: The Inn at Longshore About Me: I'm a total goofball who goes through life at a breakneck pace, trying not to knock anything over. I tend to fall in love with everything I encounter, but more than anything, I love my two little kitties, Bela and Josie, and my big kitty, Mr. Panther! As a wannabe crafter, I'm still waiting for my artistic talents to emerge. (Any day now, really.) In the meantime, I spend my days eating anything put in front of me, buying every pair of shoes I see and absorbing wedding inspiration from every inch of my surroundings. Mr. Panther and I are hardcore New Englanders planning Connecticut nuptials from our new home in the Dirty South, and can't wait to mix our newfound love of classic Southern charm with some modern city touches.

Keep It Simple – Do I Have to?!

October 31st, 2010 @ 5:50 pm by Mrs. Panther

I think my “bridal styling” will be among the last few things I choose, simply because when it comes to my looks, I change my mind a lot. I’ve been thinking for the past few weeks that I’d want to get temporary extensions—my stylist says he can dye them to match my hair exactly—and have them styled into relaxed curls/waves, like these:

I already look SO much like Gisele; this is perfect. *snort*

I figured maybe I’d just pull the top back, like this:

…And/or maybe wear a headband, like one of these:

I figured long, loose hair would keep things simple, since my dress has a lot going on. Plus, I like how I look with long hair, and it would cover up what I consider my very manly trapezius muscles.

But then again, keeping it simple has its drawbacks. A jeweled headband and long waves would probably not allow me to wear a necklace like this:

The $900 price tags might also keep me from wearing those particular pieces—the first is by Kristin Morris and the second is Ranjana Khan—but man, I sure do love a statement necklace.

But then again (again), there are so many gorgeous hair pieces that also would really only work with an updo and would probably need to be paired with a very simple necklace. Check out these, both by La Boheme:

Sigh. Everyone keeps telling me that since my dress is so detailed, I need to go simple with the accessories. Simple, simple, simple. But you know what? First of all, this is my wedding—if I’m going to go overboard, isn’t this the perfect opportunity? Second, my dress has NO bling. I’ve just started watching Say Yes to the Dress, and those dresses be CRAZY. Most girls pick out gowns with beading, crystals, pearls, applique…my dress just has some hand pleating and a ribbon belt. Come on now. I can have some bling in the accessories, no? NO?!

Did anyone else have trouble reining it in? I mean, there are just so many gorgeous options out there! It’s frigging impossible!

I actually think that your dress calls for a swept up do. Fussy (though beautiful) waves and curls will just compete with the open space of your neckline, which you really need with such a detailed dress. I would do a really cool headpiece, hair up, bare neck (if it were me - and I am a girl who loves her some statement necklaces. I think I own no less than 12 of them)

I love those Kristin Morris necklaces, but they were too darn expensive. I wore a statement necklace from J.Crew for my wedding, with hair like Gisele’s and it worked perfectly for me. If you want a bold necklace, I’d definitely look into J.Crew because they are much cheaper and you can always find a coupon code.

I say go for it! At least get what you want and on the day decide what works best. Or wear your hair down and then pull it up for the reception. Don’t wear a necklace during the ceremony but throw a statement on when you party. You’re right - it’s YOUR day. HAVE FUN!!!!

My dress has a lot going on, but I’m still wearing a sparkly feathery headband!!!! I’m just going minimal on the jewelry…

I got my wedding jewelry done by a vendor on Etsy. If you show her what you like she can try to create something for you and she is reasonable and does great work. Her store on Etsy is called LuluSplendor.

Style it up, girl! Don’t forget you could always wear a fab necklace for preceremony photos, something simple for the ceremony, and a headband/hairpiece for the reception! I hope to mix up my accessories throughout the day :)

I’m married and I’m still thinking of different ways I could style my look with my dress! There are so many option and I don’t think any way is wrong. Hair up would look decidedly classic, hair down would be more free spirit and edgy. Love your dress!

@jordynrose: Oh trust me, I live for J Crew jewelry! I think some of it will make an appearance. ;-)
@HoneyBear: Ha — are we talking about the “white trash” vow renewal with the cornrows?! I was thinking it’d be awesome to rock some cornrows with my gown, come on!
@JBCranberry: I’ll bookmark that, thanks!
@feministbride: That’s an awesome idea. I think I’ll definitely be doing some quick switches!

You can totally make your own necklaces, so they match your dress perfectly. There’s lots of places to get the fixin’s:

artbeads.com
firemountaingems.com
ringsandthings.com

and other places.
