In the past when I’d hear people say their wedding day was the best day of their lives, I thought it was kind of bullshit. I mean, how could one day, with so much stress, work and different variables associated with it, be the best day of your life? There’s so much pressure, and things are bound to go wrong…right?
Things are especially bound to go wrong if you are the type of person who sweats the small stuff. And believe me, I am master of sweating the small stuff. But in the week leading up to the wedding day, something happened. I made a conscious decision that I was going to do everything in my power to have the best day of my life. I knew I wouldn’t be able to control the uncontrollable—but I would be able to control myself and how I reacted to things. So I made some goals for my wedding day:
1. Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff – Have Fun!
This was my biggest goal and I’m happy to say it was a success!
Do you have a celebrity wedding that you just feel connected to, whether you love the wedding styling, a particular aspect (locale or dress, perhaps), or maybe just the celebrities themselves? There were a slew of celebrity weddings this summer (Carrie Underwood, Hilary Duff, Alicia Keys, Emily Deschanel, Emily Blunt & John Krasinski, just to name a few), but the celebrity wedding I was most excited for was Chelsea Clinton & Marc Mezvinsky’s.
I’ve always somehow oddly related to Chelsea Clinton. Maybe it’s because we’re about the same age and we were going through our awkward junior-high-school years at the same time. Whatever it is, I was so excited for her recent wedding. So as soon as the pictures were released, I was Googling the heck out of them. Check them out:
I don’t understand how they made all those awesome fabric swirls on the dress, but I loves them!

I got another wedding project done! Yay!
As you know, my heart was pretty much broken when I found out Oxon Hill prohibited the use of sparklers, and thought I would have to use bubbles for our send off. I’ve never really loved the bubble idea, but I thought it was a cute alternative.
Then I came across this picture:
*Gasp*
I love… love, love, love the green wands! I was inspired (needless to say) and immediately started Googling “wedding wands.” I found a lot of great tutorials: here, here, and here, but you know me: I didn’t print the instructions and go to the store, I just went to store. I came home with these supplies:
(Side note: I never really joined the “oh snap” trend when it was popular and, feeling like I missed out, I’m now throwing back to the early ’00s.)
So I had a nice, moderately interesting post about Mr. G and me transitioning from a long-distance relationship to a short-distance relationship for last night, but I fell asleep on the couch with a computer on my lap. My bad, but oh well.
I still want to get into that, but today I have something that’s way more exciting than hearing me talk about myself (even though it might be my favorite topic).
It all started with me seeing a photo of wedding cake with a Goomba on top (pictured below), a la Nintendo’s Super Mario Bros. After that, I couldn’t help but wonder about Mario-themed wedding cakes. I showed it to the future Mister, and Mr. G instantly wanted our cake to look like a Goomba so I had to start looking into Mario cakes.
Yeeeaaaaaah, well apparently, that wasn’t the only one! Yup, apparently the rest of the Internet feels the same kinship to Mario and Peach’s relationship as Mr.G does. Ready for this? There’s no way not to smile after these!

Hello hive! Long time no talk?
I’ve been quite the little video editor this week, editing videos for two weddings Mr. Dolphin and I have been to in the past few months. When Mr. Dolphin and I first saw our highlights video it instantly took us back to that day, that special moment in our lives. We knew video was incredibly important to us and we were so happy the lovely Erika Rydell was able to be there to capture our day so beautifully.
Recently, Mr. Dolphin and I went to two weddings, one for my cousin up in Erie, PA (we drove, we are crazy) and one for his cousin in St. Augustine, FL. Both weddings were sans videographer. We wanted our cousins to have fun little videos from their weddings because a video shows emotion and the mood of a wedding so much better then any photo could ever show (we believe). Luckily, Mr. Dolphin and I are always equipped with a ridiculous amount of video/photo equipment everywhere we go (remember our honeymoon video?).

We love Romona Keveza! She’s always so accessible as a person, making sure to greet us every year personally as we attend her shows.
Romona Keveza (say Kah-vay-sha) was my dream wedding dress designer, long before I knew anything about the crazy world of wedding dress designers. I’d bookmark many of her dresses in bridal magazines and dreamed of wearing her designs! It’s so crazy that I’ve been able to check out her collections in person for the past few years, and they always bring me back to my days as a bride-to-be, dreaming of what my wedding gown would look like.
This year Romona Keveza’s Fall 2011 Collection was inspired by Holly Golightly, kicking off with perfect little black dresses, and moving on to what Romona envisions Holly would be married in. Swoon!

One of the big checks off the to do list last week was taking our engagement pictures. I was definitely looking forward to having professional photographs taken since the only pics King Hippo and I have together are ones we’ve taken of ourselves with a point and shoot camera. You know the ones, where you can only get your heads in the picture ’cause your arm is only so long? Yes. Real photos were definitely in order.
Now, I definitely don’t want to overload you with photos of the Hippos, but I am thrilled with how they came out… so, let’s agree to three engagement photo posts shall we? Just three…. only three. Three tiny, short and to the point posts. O.k.?
So, if you’ve been following along, you’ll remember that I fretted about what to wear for our engagement pics here and here and here (oh, and here), but we finally decided on two different looks. For the first look, I donned a purple Victoria’s Secret dress and King Hippo wore a white and purple button down with jeans. We headed to a Dallas area park to strike a pose and got the following pics back from our amazing photographers.
The following post is NSFW.
I talked about our combination bachelor & bachelorette weekend before and told you that the destination was a surprise. Weeeeeeeeell….
So we headed down to San Diego on a dreary So Cal Saturday. Mr. G, me and BFF slash our videographer made a quick stop in Dana Point to have lunch with a friend that couldn’t make it that night, then continued on to our hotel in San Diego. We were hooked up in a suite with 2 Queen beds and a pull-out sofa and a handy kitchen.

Announcing an engagement almost certainly results in a mixed bag of emotions.
Having the whole experience happen while we were living abroad was awesome. It’s a story I won’t ever forget, and it means the world to me because it’s something that Mr. Jaguar and I experienced together. The first few weeks following our engagement were lovely, and we had a lot of support and well wishes—cards were sent to us across the waters, and we received lots of phone messages, texts, sweet comments, and e-mails that made our day.
The part that was the most difficult about being here was being so far away from family and friends when it came to celebrating the engagement and sharing the excitement. We were sort of stumped at the beginning: who do we celebrate with? We had both made friends through living and working in London, and while they were legitimately pleased for us, it wasn’t quite the same. My work friends didn’t really know Mr. Jaguar; Mr. Jaguar’s work friends didn’t really know me. Holding a celebratory engagement dinner or drinks night seemed a little redundant, so we just kept it to ourselves.

Mr. Octo’s wedding day outfit was very nearly a disaster. We asked the men in our wedding party to wear black suits of their own choosing, with no other specifications. Easy, right? Well, not necessarily. We bought Mr. Octo’s black suit months and months and months ago, in late January or early February. He actually needed a black suit for a different occasion, and we bought it off the rack at Macy’s, on a big sale, at the very last minute (like, the day beforehand). At the time, I thought, “Great. Black suit, purchased. His wedding day outfit is taken care of!” Then, I proceeded not to think about it again until about four days before the wedding.
At the very last minute, I had a thought. We had bought that black suit in a huge hurry, he wore it once for a few hours, and then it hung in the closet for months. “Babe?” I said. “Why don’t you try your wedding suit on? Just to make sure it looks good?”
He obliged, and as he stepped into the living room to show me, I felt incredibly dismayed.

Yes, I’m alive. Call off the search party and tell the neighbors to stop looking in our windows.
Wouldn’t it be so impressive if I had this incredible excuse for my absence? Like, I was cast in a big budget movie and haven’t had a moment away from the cameras…or…I won the lottery and have been very busy deciding what to do with my new-found fortune? Yeah, it would be great if that were the case.
What I can tell you is that I have gotten lost in domestic bliss - sorting through the mountains of crap we need to give away, sell at a garage sale or just plain throw out, trying out new recipes with all of the fun registry gifts we received from our loved ones, starting to write thank you cards and not finishing even one because we are lazy (incredibly grateful…but lazy), discussing how to split our time with family during the holidays…oh…and…

Thankfully (for me), the walk down the aisle was very, very short.
Pam gave my dress one last fluff to make sure the train was lying perfectly.
Funny story. Pam had given me a Tic-Tac about ten minutes before I got to this point. I was trying to calm myself down, so I took a really deep breath. The photo below shows me almost choking on the tic-tac.
…since our wedding!
It’s gone by super fast and all I have to say is, being married is awesome!
So as we celebrate our one month anniversary on this deliciously grey and rainy day here in Los Angeles, I just wanted to share a bright and shiny sneak peek from our amazing photographer, Kirsten Ellis:

Hold on to your hats people, these two kids have joined the grown-ups’ table because we have just signed our first tenancy agreement together! Now, this post isn’t strictly wedding-related…but I’m pretending it is because marriage = making a home together, and home usually involves some sort of house to live in.
The title of this post is what my mother used to always say to console us kids whenever we had to pack up and move house/town/country when we were growing up (which was a LOT). “Home is where your heart is” didn’t really do it for us because we always said our hearts were back where we just came from, so our suitcases had to be the alternative.
My family (minus Mum) and I in the Denpasar airport 2007. Doing our typical “make jokes” routine so we don’t think about what we are leaving behind
One of the things Mr E and I have talked about over and over is our wish to have a proper “home” together and leave the itinerant lifestyle of our childhoods behind.
