Next on the list of things to do during Planapalooza 2010 was my hair trial.
Now, I don’t really have a hairstylist in Dallas. When I lived there I had a stylist, but her salon is about 40 minutes away in the ’burbs. While I’m sure she would certainly travel to fix me up, I figured it wasn’t worth the added price to have her away from her salon on a busy Saturday. And since I haven’t lived there in more than two years, it isn’t like I had to have her do my ’do on my wedding day. I just don’t feel that tied to her, to be honest. So, I started from scratch.
The hotel the BMs and I will be getting ready at has a salon next door to it, so I sent an email asking if there was someone there who had experience with African-American hair textures. Now, for all the brides of color out there, I know you know my pain. Working with a stylist who doesn’t understand your hair texture can be a total nightmare, and something I would just rather avoid. OK…on to the hair trial…
If you remember from this post, I was looking for an updo and was deciding if I would use my veil or ditch it altogether. I headed to the salon with veil in tow, a couple of rhinestone barrette thingies and my inspiration photos. The stylist thought my hair was a little too short to pull off the full looking updo I was looking for, so she whipped out a strip of a hair extension that just happened to match my hair and went to town. Here’s what she came up with:
I’m actually super pleased with how it turned out, and I especially love the bump-it like look to the top.
Next, we experimented with the rhinestone barrettes:
After that, we tried the veil with the rhinestone barrettes on top of it. I went from, “I don’t think I’m really into wearing a veil” to “Oh, I think I really like it!!” in about 10 seconds. It definitely did make me feel like I had more of a bridal ’do than prom ’do. Here are the pics (uhhhh…I guess I could have taken the tag off):
So…it is decided. I’m going to go with the veil after all, but just for the ceremony. The veil will go on top of the bun thingy with the rhinestone barrettes on top of it. Then, for the reception, the veil will come off and I’ll go with just the rhinestone pins.
I am super excited about how the hair trial turned out, and I ended up booking the stylist immediately afterward for my big day. The bun thingy was barely on the side, so I think when I go back I will have the stylist offset it a little more, so you can really tell that it’s a side bun. Now, in her defense, she asked me how “side” I wanted the back to be, and I was a little scared to commit, but now that I feel 100% confident in her skills, I think making it a little more side will be even better.
That’s one more thing checked off the list.
Did your hair trial change your mind about whether or not to wear a veil?
