…using spray paint! Until a few days ago, I had never touched a can of spray paint, and quite frankly, I was scared to try it out. I don’t know why, but spray painting seemed very intimidating, and I was really nervous to try it out.
But, I had a project that needed spray paint, so I had to suck it up and get over the nerves! And guess what? That project has easily become my absolute favorite DIY project for the wedding so far. I don’t know why I’m so obsessed with it, but I am SO excited to share!
You see, I’ve been thinking a lot lately about props for our photo booth. I’ve loved the look of chalkboards in photo booths for a while now, and became mildly obsessed with photos like this:

(Source) Side note: I totally need to find some cute empty frames. LOVE those photos!
The only problem was that the only chalkboards I could find were either really ugly and boring or out of my (very low) price range. I didn’t want to spend a lot of money on this little detail, so anything more than about $20 or so was just not going to happen.
So then, I had the brilliant idea of just making my own. Now, this hasn’t really worked out too well for me in the past (don’t even get me started on the napkins I’m making, aka the worst decision EVER) but this time it was a stroke of pure genius.
I found a frame for $1.99 at Goodwill and snatched it up one day last week. Then, I headed out to Michaels and got a piece of thin wood (I think it’s used for paintings?) for about $5. Add on some sandpaper, a small can of yellow spray paint, and a can of chalkboard spray paint and the whole project ended up being right around $20. Exactly what I wanted to spend!

My supplies!
The wood piece we got was a bit too big for the frame, so Mr. Cardigan just used our X-Acto knife to help me score it on both sides and we broke off the excess pieces. Worked like a charm!
Then, I took it all outside and got to spraying! I was nervous, but I’ve watched enough HGTV to know the basics behind how to spray paint. I found out that it was MUCH easier than I expected, and actually a ton of fun. Soon, I had a cute yellow frame and a little wooden chalkboard.

I’m obsessed with that yellow spray paint! Such an awesome color!
I threw the chalkboard in the frame, and voila! A super cute, super cheap chalkboard for our photo booth:

The whole project took less than two hours from start to finish (and at least an hour and a half of that was just waiting for paint to dry in-between coats!) and I’m so proud of it! It turned out SO cute, and I can’t wait to see how it looks in our photos! And, of course, I’ve warned Mr. Cardy that now that I’m comfortable with spray painting, nothing in our house is safe from my leftover chalkboard and yellow paint! I’m dying for another painting project already!
