Mrs. Knitting, Toronto Age and Occupation: 24, Student Recruitment Assistant Fiance's Age and Occupation: 24, Neuroscience PhD Candidate Engagement Date: October 2009 Wedding Date: December 2010 Venue: University of Toronto Faculty Club About Me: I'm a pearl wearing, etiquette book reading Toronto girl who loves cooking and baking, museums, charm bracelets, and collecting books on Jackie Kennedy (a lot). I've been known to spend Sunday mornings at the antique market, Wednesday evenings at sister sushi dinners, and any bit of spare time reading. After six and a half years of many late night walks, watching DVDs together in bed, travelling to places like New York, and Tobermory, doing Sudokus together on the couch, lots of Indian food, the occasional yoga class, moving in together and so much more, Mr. Knitting and I are planning a cozy Christmasy (it's a word!), vintage wedding in Toronto complete with many DIY projects (eek!) and lots of help from our amazing group of family and friends.

I Already Have One, But…

November 1st, 2010 @ 5:23 pm by Mrs. Knitting

I’m at a point now when whenever I’m in a store or out shopping somewhere I’m always subconsciously on the lookout for things for the wedding. This is not always a good thing, because a few times I’ve come across something that would be perfect for the wedding and I then have to remind myself I already own something else that will perform the exact same function at the wedding. For example, we bought our card box almost a year ago during a Boxing Week sale at Pier 1 Imports.

Here it is:

I Already Have One, But... : wedding decor toronto 010

I Already Have One, But... : wedding decor toronto 012

I spent about 6 months second guessing my choice because of the fact that it’s made of wire and not solid, but then realized that birdcages aren’t solid either and they make fantastic card boxes, so who cares?

Anyway, yesterday I was shopping at Winners and found this gorgeous Christmas box that would be perfect for cards (no pictures, sorry!). I liked that box more than I like the one I already own and I spent about 15 minutes staring at it. It was $8.99 so it was affordable, and I told myself it wouldn’t be the end of the world to have purchased two card boxes. They were both cheap, so I wouldn’t really be wasting to much money.

Then, I came to my senses. No one, other than maybe me, is going to care about the card box. Most people probably won’t notice what it looks like. Even if it is inexpensive, that’s money I could spend another way (like on sushi dinners!). What am I going to do with 2 card boxes after the wedding? For that matter, what am I going to do with 1 card box after the wedding?

Situations like this have happened a few times. Sometimes I manage to avoid buying the new item and sometimes I don’t. For example, I now have 2 ring bearer dishes.

First one that I wrote about here:

I Already Have One, But... : wedding decor toronto 001

New one:

I Already Have One, But... : wedding decor toronto Ringdi

See my problem? Yes, these came to a grand total of $13 altogether, but there’s no need to have 2 ring dishes. Clearly, I need to start avoiding stores until our wedding…

Are you having problems with buying too many things for your wedding?

I used that exact gold present box from Pier One for the card box at my wedding! We did champagne and gold as our wedding colors and so it worked perfect with the color scheme, and I thought that it looked greate with the rest of the presents on the gift table. While I don’t know what the other box looks like, I still like the idea of the gold present, plus it will fit in great with your Christmas theme.

I love your imperial Russia plate! I forget which fairytale that is though. Being Russian immigrants my mom has a while collection of those plates on her wall, an we all (mom Sis and I) have fabulous jewelry boxes w the same motifs :)

Basically since the moment I got engaged, I’ve been seeing things in stores that I could use for the wedding. :)

…as a follow up since I have the gold present box and you were wondering what to do with it after the wedding - I plan on using the box as part of my Christmas decorations. I don’t know whether I am going to fill it with ornaments, or use it as our Christmas card box, or something else I haven’t thought of yet. With either box you choose though you could incorporate it next year into your general holiday decorations.

OMG I so feel you on this. Every store I go in I’m on a constant hunt for anything that could be used. I have no idea what I’ll do with all of the vases/metal containers/candles/candle holders I’ve collected so far after the wedding. And will continue to collect, I’m sure. Oy.

I follow this blog often, and I saw your new ring plate today. I used to own the same plate and it held a lot of sentimental value for me. When moving into my new house with my husband he broke it, and I cried. I don’t think he knows how much the plate meant to me, but if I could buy this from you when you are finished with it, it would mean so much. Please e-mail me if you are interested. I would pay for shipping as well.

Thank you, and good luck with your planning!
