Something Old

November 1st, 2010 @ 6:33 pm by Mrs. Elephant

We all know how the saying goes: Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue. While there are some obvious items for my something new (dress, hairpin) and I love my somethings blue (shoes, earrings), I haven’t nailed down my something old or borrowed yet.

Sadly, I will not be able to share this momentous occasion with any of my grandparents, as they have all passed on. There will be a memory page in the programs, but I knew I wanted to incorporate their memory with something more.

Picture of me and my two grandmothers at my first tap recital. Mom-Mom is the one I am looking up at.

Thankfully, my mom still has several pieces of jewelry from her mom (my grandmother was more affectionately known as Mom-Mom to all of her grandkids).

When I mentioned to her that I would love to use a piece of Mom-Mom’s jewelry for my wedding bouquet, Mama Elephant came to the rescue with this brooch. (Doesn’t it look very similar to icon of our very own Miss Brooch, minus the green?)

Is that Gypsy looking on?

I love it! My plan is to have it pinned to the front of my bouquet similar to this, below:

Did you incorporate any family jewelry pieces into your wedding?

Lovely!
My necklace will be one that my grandmother gave to me for my HS graduation. She had the diamonds from her engagement ring and her mother’s wedding band re-set into a pendant. (Sounds glamorous but it’s actually pretty small, but it holds LOADS of sentimental value.) I’ll carry my grandmother with me through that pendant, as well as the long marriages that those diamonds were a part of.

I’m wearing an aquamarine bracelet that has been in my family for a long time…and I’m pinning my grandmother’s guardian angel pin to my bouquet, or putting it somewhere in my dress.

Yes indeed. My wedding band was my late grandmother’s on my mom’s side, and I will also be wearing an art deco diamond cocktail ring that was my late grandmother’s on my dad’s side. I love that both my grandmothers will be represented through my rings.
I also have a blue butterfly pin that was Nana #1’s, which I might use to pin my bouquet.

This tradition wasn’t one I’d really heard of or thought about before wedding blogs, the same goes for my mum. We were talking about it the other day, and she doesn’t have any jewelry from her mum apart from a watch, and some 60s plastic jewelry. Plus, she liked yellow gold, and like white gold (ok, and rose gold) so if there was something, it’d really stand out a lot.
I’m fine with all this. :)

@missbiscuit: That sounds like an amazing piece of history and jewelry! How special to have something that represents marriages in your family!

@mightywombat: That is so great to have pieces from both grandmothers! I want to try and find something from my dad’s mom but I don’t know how much he actually got before her passing.

@jordynrose: Haha, thanks! I think I was 3 and we were tap dancing to Michael Jackson’s beat it.

I am planning to wear a pair of silver cuff bracelets of my grandmother’s that she wore every day. Since she passed away, the bracelets rotate between my aunts, and my aunt who will have them during my wedding offered them to me to wear.

That’s so beautiful! I had my Moose necklace around my bouquet and it was so comforting to know that, although not physically there, I had Moose with me.

Perfect! The brooch is beautiful. I plan on doing something kind of similar. I inherited my great grandmothers spectacular wedding ring, and while I used to not go a day without it, since I have my own ering now I don’t wear hers as often. But I plan on incorporating it into my wedding somehow.
