It was the day before our wedding and the scene was set. Me, crying and screaming on the bed in front of my laptop and Mr. G trying to hold me and thumping my back to control my breathing. My mom appears and (literally) thwacks me over the head (oh, Asian mothers) and scolds, “STOP CRYING!”
Not the best way to go into our wedding weekend. I was looking at our Saturday wedding forecast,
and feeling very, very sorry for myself. Just the day before we had been with Team England at Disneyland enjoying a lovely Southern California fall day—sunny, blue skies and 80+ degrees. The weather had been gorgeous all week. What did I do to deserve this? I believe my famous last words were, “The backup plan for rain is that there is no back up plan. It just won’t rain.”
I whined to my fellow bees and the love, support, and well wishes you sent my way were amazing.
I began to cheer up and pray for the best. The forecast called for heavy rain over Friday night, showers all morning on Saturday that (hopefully) would clear by the afternoon, just in time for the wedding.
We rehearsed and had dinner with our readers, my parents, and our OOT guests. Souplantation, just in case you were wondering. I stayed up until 11 PM and there was not a drop on the ground yet. Wearily, Mr. G and I went to bed. I got terrible sleep because sometime during the night it started to rain hard and my dreams were all about rain on our wedding day.
I woke up the next morning bright and early and looked out the window: BLUE skies, BRIGHT, and SUNNY! I turned on the news; the storm system had passed over Los Angeles quicker than expected and there was to be no more rain that day!
Our wedding day looked like this:
I truly, truly, believe the hive did that for us. The love and good mojo they sent towards us surely did work. I love you, girls! Thank you for all the support!
Not only did the girls from the hive come through for me, but my girls here at home really did the damn thing, too. I had girls helping set up, girls pouring me drinks, putting on my makeup, getting my dress on, running back and forth between Mr. G and I to help communicate what needed to happen—it was just amazing love and effort. I’ll never forget the few minutes right before the wedding when it took 3 girls and immeasurable strength to hook and zip my wedding dress.
The wedding was so much fun. Dare I say, it was perfect. Everyone loved the food, the ceremony, and my dress. We had some snafus: the music was a hot mess, I didn’t know when to walk down the aisle, none of the guests knew when they could get drinks or start eating, but everyone had a great time.
Sure, celebrating the love between Mr. G and me was an important part of our wedding day but I am truly in awe of the love and strong spirit I saw from others for us that day. It really does take a village to put on a wedding. I appreciate everyone’s good will and effort. Our wedding day was special because of all the people that made it happen.
Were you amazed by the generosity of those around you for your wedding?
