Do I Have to Wear it All Day?

November 2nd, 2010 @ 6:58 pm by Mrs. Knitting

I love my wedding dress. LOVE it (yes, I’m mean and haven’t shown it to you). However, I’m a bit concerned about wearing it for a whole day. I like comfortable clothes. I almost never wear heels, I don’t like things that are restrictive or corset like, and pretty much the second I come home I change into something pajama-like. I may have even once hosted a brunch in my PJs. Okay, they were cute cupcake PJs that I’d never slept in and the brunch was for 3 of my closest friends, but still, they were PJs.

The PJs in question:

Do I Have to Wear it All Day? : wedding toronto wedding dress Stamp

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a slob and do have the ability to dress myself appropriately, but I am concerned about my ability to stay in formal clothing for a whole day. While our wedding isn’t until 5PM, we’re starting to take pictures at 1:30 so I’m in for about 12 hours of dress time. Blarg. My dress is pretty simple and comfy, but it’s not sweatpants-comfy. Would it be totally weird to schedule time where I don’t have to wear my dress? Okay, yeah, that’s pretty weird. Maybe I’ll just have to suck it up. I’m hoping in the excitement of the day that I won’t even notice.

So, am I a complete weirdo? Has anyone else had this problem? How did you deal with it?

Why not consider a more comfortable outfit to change into for the last few hours of your reception? Maybe pajamas aren’t feasible, but you might be able to come up with something more comfortable than a wedding gown.

Not a wierdo! I have been thinking the same thing.. ‘how am I going to make it the whole day in this dress!’. I’m figuring that we’ll be having so much fun, that we’ll hardly notice how many hours have gone by.. I’ll let you know after this weekend!

I share this thought with you and I had this fear before my wedding! but..honestly I did not want to take my dress off at the end of the night! I was in it from 130-11pm. It was sad taking it off. And I was in a bridal bra. BUT i wore spanx under my dress for pics and the ceremony but those suckers came off right after that!
Honestly, I dont think you will want to take your dress off. ;) It is completely different than any other dress/event of your life :)

I hope this helps!

By the time I got to the part of the evening when wearing my dress might have gotten old, I was too drunk to care.

(I mean, not that I got drunk at my wedding. That would be unladylike.)

You are definitely NOT a weirdo! I had the exact same worries before my wedding. Every time I tried on my dress, I felt like I could barely breath and sit down. I especially thought I was going to be miserable with all the heat that I felt under the dress.

As it turns out, it didn’t even cross my mind the whole day! I wore it from 12:30 pm - 11 pm. So don’t stress over it! You will be fine!

You can buy a simpler white every-day type dress and just wear it after some hours into the night (right when the party’s getting good!). It’ll still be wedding-like, you would have shown your beloved gown for a considerable amount of time, and you’ll be comfy enough to get into a more relaxed mood. I think it can even help set the mood for the entire party. I mean, if you get more comfortable, won’t everybody else too?

I, myself, have even considered wearing my very simple wedding dress as the second dress if I find any other that i love even more. It’s a good way to keep my options open! Mine was just $150 and it is gorgeous, so I bet you could find a second dress easily.

@daniellealys: That’s really good to hear.
@LittlestBirds: Haha, yes, terribly uncouth!

We started our pictures at 2pm (a little later), and I just wore my dress all day. I honestly didn’t get sick of wearing it until the very end of the evening, and by then it was time to go home and take it off anyway.

I’m just like you. I hate dressing up- well, I don’t hate dressing up, I just don’t like not dressing comfortable for long. I’d rather be in jeans and a comfy sweater. I was a little concerned about my wedding dress b/c it was HUGE. I’m not sure how I ended up with it really- totally not everyday me. And, i get really crabby when I’m dressed up too long and too hot. But, I didn’t want to take that dress off. (well, not exactly ;) )I think that the day was so fun and I felt so pretty in it that I just really enjoyed wearing it. I think it was just that it fit me really well so even though it was a huge dress, I didn’t mind. I think I also loved that all these little girls at the wedding kept coming up to me and hugging me and my huge skirt all day since I was the closest to a real0life princess they had and the association of those feelings, and the feelings of the whole day, made it so I just really enjoyed wearing it. That, and it was way too much work to get it on right so there was no way it was coming off and going back on again.

I’m like you, I hate restrictive clothing and don’t wear dresses…but I loved my dress. It was super comfy and I was having so much fun I wouldn’t have noticed otherwise.

i think the solution is clear. purchase white silk pajamas, embellish with lace, add veil.

I so want you tp opt for bridal PJs later in your reception. But it might just be because I don’t have the guts to be that cool. ;)

oh, that is TOTALLY ME! I’m having anxiety about being uncomfortable, sweaty, etc in my dress! I love looking at it, I’m just not crazy about spending all day in it. I acutally posted about this a while ago on the boards and a lot of brides said they didn’t even think about it on the big day. I’m hoping we feel the same way. I’m still going to bring along a special “bride” comfy outfit, (cute sweats outfit) just in case!

Change into a reception dress, or if you have a chunk of downtime, step out of it?

I had 2 hours of downtime (out of a 20hour wedding day!) so I changed out of my dress and just wore a robe in the hotel.

This is exactly why my #1 dress requirement is that it is comfortable!
I am totally through with a fancy dress/heels outfit after an evening out. All day in a dress anything less than entirely comfortable would get on my nerves!

By the time we were making the rounds at our reception, my dress was feeling so tight, heavy, and hot that I KNEW I was not going to make it until the end of the reception wearing it. One of my aunts ran over to the hotel and grabbed my short little after-party dress out of our room for me, and I changed into it with about 30-45 minutes left to go in the reception. It was MAGICAL. I still remember the amazing cool-breeze feeling of relief when I changed into that short, light, fluffy little dress. HIGHLY recommended!!!

I’m the same way and I didn’t want to take my dress off at the end of the night, I loved wearing it so much. Don’t worry about it and just enjoy it!

My dress was so tight and uncomfortable and I kept tripping over it. First heels came off. Then I unhooked it. Then the corset came off. Then the petticoat. By the end of the night I was so happy to get the damn thing off! I wish I would have had a comfy dress to change into like Mrs. Octopus!
