The Dress I Almost Bought

November 2nd, 2010 @ 1:10 pm by Mrs. Hippo

After getting my hair did, I went to the bridal salon to try on my dress. Well, not my actual dress ’cause it wasn’t in yet (bummer!), but the sample of my dress. You know…just to see the whole dress, hair, veil look all together. But before we get to those pics, I have to show you the dress that almost was.

Shortly after getting engaged (way back when), I made a trip to Dallas to help throw a baby shower for one of the members of my bridal party. Since I was in town, I used the time to start looking at venues and to make a trip to my friend’s awesome bridal salon to look at dresses. Honestly, I love the whole wedding dress buying experience. Even when the dresses that don’t look right on me, I can imagine how someone would like them. I even like seeing other brides try on dresses and seeing them decide which dress is right for them for their wedding. I could just hang out at the shop all day long…seriously. I think it’s that much fun.

After trying on several different styles of gowns, I quickly learned that ball gowns were not for me.

Not only did those styles not really fit the feel of our modern ceremony venue, but it just wasn’t a flattering style for me. This Hippo has some hips (hahahaha!), and surprisingly, those poofy dresses weren’t as hip hiding as I would have thought. Much to my amazement, a more fitted style was actually much more flattering. Who knew??!?!

It didn’t take me long to find this gown and really love it. It seemed perfect. Classy, yet modern. Simple, yet ornate. It seemed like a perfect gown… wanna see?

The view from the back. I’m a huge fan of the shape of this gown.

And the close-up detail… I love the pleating along the bust and the details along the waist. Ummm… gloves? No, thank you.

Even though I loved the dress, it felt really early to purchase it. It was just two months into our 19 month engagement, after all. Plus, I wanted to wait and try it on for Mama Hippo before signing on the dotted line. Funny thing about waiting…it didn’t end up being “the” dress.

Did you think you found the dress, only to find out you didn’t?

I found a nice plain white beach dress that I liked. But then it turned out I fell in love with this dress in a shop near me because it was so perfect for the theme we decided on - Pirate. Only it was ridiculously expesive. And that dress has been in that shop a looooong time, and is damaged. And even reduced for the damage, it was still expensive. So I ended up deciding to make ‘the’ dress. So i still haven’t seen the dress properly. lol.

oh and there was also a beautiful hand printed silk gown I liked. :-) So that’s 3 dresses I thought might be it that weren’t. :-)

I was convinced I would have no idea when I found “the dress.” I’d tried on so many… some I liked, some I didn’t. A couple I thought, “Wow, I look amazing in this.” So I figured it would come down to one of those. Then I went into this one shop sort of on a whim, tried on a dress (the one I wanted they didn’t have) and burst into tears with joy! It was THE dress! I almost feel like it found me. <3

Dear Ms. Hippo, I might be stepping out on a limb here but I have found that some women of color especially those that are slim but have some hips, thighs and butts are very very beautiful in mermaid shapes and all sorts of modified A lines. I honestly haven’t bought my dress but when I went, those shapes looked the best and based on your previous pictures, I think those will fit you too. BTW, I love the picture you put up. The style was one of my contenders too :)

Ps. I’ve found the dress, then found out that I didn’t when I saw the price. Yowzah :(

That is a beautiful dress! I did like you, thought I found the dress but was only a couple months into our engagement so I didn’t buy it thankfully. I found “the” dress just a few months ago. :D

Right after I got engaged I saw a dress as a fashion show that I fell in love with! I loved everything about it and was so excited to try it on. I looked at it again and again for 7 months until I went to try on dresses and then bam! The moment I saw it up close in person, I hated it. I agreed to try it on but it was all wrong. The dress I ended up getting is COMPLETELY different! Funny how it all works out!

I personally did the wrong thing && fell in love with a dress that was in a magazine. Such a horrible thing to do because it broke my heart when I tried the dress on and hated how it looked for me. For months I knew I had THE dress but in the end. This wasn’t the case.

I found a dress I loved in pictures but never got to try it on..in my quest to find that dress I found the Maggie I ended up wearing on our wedding day. I am glad I ended up with it too because it was perfect and I really did feel like a princess on our wedding day.

I struggled for weeks going back and forth between 3 dresses. It seriously drove me crazy. I saw many I liked online and I went to try them and they were hideous and didn’t fit right. I hate big poofy gowns, and I hate crinoline ( I think that is what it’s called). I tried on this chiffon dress with crystal straps that draped in the back, even though it was 2 sizes to big I just loved it. Even though I am slim, it was hard to envision it because the dress was huge on me and it was hard to clip because of the straps. So I tried on some more, and honestly all the dresses were nice so it made it even harder!!! But, I could not stop thinking about the dress with the straps and ended up trying it on like 4 more times before I finally bit the bullet and bought it. I can’t wait until it comes in !

That dress is stunning and I’m sure you would be stunning in it! When I was dress shopping, it was a year until our wedding but I knew I found “the one” as they say. It really just hit me.

wow that’s a gorgeous dress! I am pear-shaped and was surprised that a mermaid-type silhouette actually looked best. I had always imagined A-line being a more logically flattering option but it didn’t turn out that way.

I got lucky, I found the dress that I am “planning” on buying in a magazine and it looks great on me I am a pear shape and the dress is a A-Line gown, but now that we have had to post pone our wedding 6 times I am having second thoughts on the dress, I have been looking on line at other stores that have similar dresses to the one I picked out. The problem with the one I picked out which was the very first dress I ever put on is that it comes in quite a few different accent colors around the trim and the train. I tried the first sample on in a cotton candy pink Yuck to pink but it looked great on me, I went to a different store and their sample came in a burgundy red, which is a color I have always liked and thought looked good on me, but this one did not look good at all, so thoughts start going through my head am I picking the right dress because our colors are black and purple and the trim on my dress is going to be purple but I can not seem to find a store that carries the dress in my color to try on to see if it is going to look good or not, plus after the last dress that I tried on I am having second thoughts on having a train on my dress, I did not like the way the sales clerk showed me how the bustle was going to look. I am at a loss guess I am going to have to go try on some other dresses to make up my mind.
