My Latest Obsession: Cathedral Veils

November 3rd, 2010 @ 12:01 pm by Mrs. Brooch

I was never a huge fan of veils. Not at first, anyway.

I knew I’d be wearing one, though. Granny’s wishes. We’re really close and I’d do anything for the woman, including wearing a veil and a blusher on my wedding day.

It was one of those things I figured I’d warm up to and I definitely have. With each dress, I put on a veil knowing I’d have to eventually buy and wear one, all the while not giving the type of veil any thought at all.

I never even knew there were so many to choose from!

Then I tried on the cathedral veil and it stole my heart! <3

I love the cathedral length!

I’m totally surprised by my choice to go with a longer veil, because I never imagined I wanted anything as bold. I’d usually go for the most manageable piece, but I can’t resist the femininity and flowing statement of the cathedral.

It’s perfect, because I was never big into the idea of a long train, and a longer veil is the next best thing. I hadn’t quite decided if that was  what I wanted, but on Say Yes to the Dress, the cathedral veil really sold the whole look. It did the same when I tried on my dream dress (the Maggie Sottero Reese).

I’ll never forget my Maid of Honor’s reaction when I put the cathedral veil on! She said, “Oh! That gave me goose bumps…” and then she started crying. :)

They’re regal.

Feminine.

Elegant.

Soft.

Everything I want to be on my wedding day.

And what better way to feel like a blushing bride that with wavy tulle flowing in the wind behind you?

Not to mention, the pictures will be phenomenal…

I love  the picture below because the veil hangs just a few inches off of the gown.

It’s just what I have in mind for mine!

The whole wearing a veil thing is still pretty new for me though, and I have a lot of questions.

When do I wear it?

Do I wear it all night or just during the ceremony?

Should I wear it during pictures?

Should the blusher be the same length? That might be kind of tricky!

How much does it cost to attach a blusher?

How much do veils cost? Those that I’ve seen and liked have ranged from $300 to $500!

I made my own cathedral length veil… I bought the tulle, and the comb and it was just a razor cut edge… super duper easy, and it was only the cost of the tulle and comb.

Look at Occansey Designs! I ordered my cathedral veil from there and it was only about $65. I also fell in love with the look of the cathedral veil–so elegant and dreamy! I only ended up wearing mine for family pictures, the ceremony, and cocktail hour; I took it off for the reception.

You should ask your recently married friends (or bees) if they have a cathedral veil you could borrow. That’s what I did, so I paid $0 for the veil I wore. :-) Or you can always try ebay for a steal of a deal. Or the classifieds on here. $300 is too much for a veil you will really wear only once.

i got my veil from http://www.veilshop.com - they were phenomenal and the best prices i could find anywhere (and they had a drop veil, which i had a hard time finding anywhere else)

I feel the same way you do! I swore I would not wear one but my grandma asked and so did my mom so I agreed to one! Now i’m actually excited to go try them on, especially the cathedral ones!

I feel if I’m going to wear one, I’m going to go the whole way! I think I would just wear a cathedral veil during the ceremony & pictures…& probably the cocktail hour as well; As for the reception I would do a pretty head piece (probably Jewelled!) that would complement everything…So i’d also get what I originally wanted, Comfort & chic sexiness!!!

if you’re going cathedral, wear it just for the ceremony and some pictures (you’ll probably want some pictures with the veil and some without for variety). for the reception, you can either get a shorter veil or a fascinator. the blusher is short, usually to your shoulders. you can find a quality veil for around $100 online — try ebay and etsy. never buy at a bridal salon — they’re a total ripoff!

Yes, Occansey Designs helped me out a lot. I would have ordered it from there but I was a little worried about measuring myself. I don’t sew, my mom does, but I really did not want my mom’s opinion on it, especially bc she didn’t udnerstand my vision.

So I ended up making friends w/ this awesome seamstress who made it for me :). It was a cathedral length drop veil. It was 120 inches long and the blusher came down to my hips. It was PERFECT! I liked it bc it wasn’t poofy.

You can wear it whenever you’d like, however you’d like. I wore mind during the ceremony and had my brother (who gave me away) lift the blusher because it was long. (You can also keep the blusher down until you’re kissed by your hubby).

I left it on for all of my pictures…although I wish I had taken it off at some point. But I did take it off the second we got to reception. My mom said she had wanted me to dance with it…but being that long and my train then bustled, it would have gotten in the way. However, that is your choice as well.

Hope this helps.

Veils are such a ripoff! I got mine at Occansey Designs for like $70- that was as much as I was willing to spend on a piece of tulle. I did wear mine for the 1st look and the pictures we took before the ceremony, but I took it off for the group ones afterwards because it did get to be a bit cumbersome. Since I was also wearing a flower clip, I didn’t think I necessarily needed it. If you can’t decide, you might want to think about doing a 2-tier where you can remove the cathedral and just wear the shorter one for pictures. I know Occansey has that option.

*I would wear it during the ceremony and take it off so you have more freedom of movement during the reception.

*Wear it during formal pictures :-)

*Not really sure on how blushers work with cathedral veils. I would talk to a dress shop consultant on that one!

*Definitely stalk the classifieds for a veil! My veil was originally $200. The girl sold it to me for only $50. :-)

I love the pictures of women in veils, however, when I tried some on with my dress I just felt silly! I don’t know why. Everyone else looks beautiful in them, but I just feel awkward in them. I told the sales lady “I feel like a ghost”. LOL she said that was the first time she had heard that…I am surprised! I will be wearing a crystal headband. You are lucky you can pull one off, I cant wait to see your episode of SYTTD!!!

I bought my dress at Kleinfelds too, and fell in love with how it looked with a cathedral veil. Unfortunately, I was so dazzled by the kleinfeld’s one that I bought it on the spot. I wish I had shopped around a bit for a cheaper one. If you’re interested in a cathedral length veil with some sparkle, I’d be willing to loan mine out to you!

I just wore mine for the ceremony. I found it a bit heavy and awkward to walk around with it on, and it kept getting pulled during the receiving line when people hugged/kissed me. Made for great pictures though!

I love cathedral lengths veils too! I couldn’t imagine wearing anything else. I wore mine for the ceremony, photos and first dance, then took it off for the reception. I loved it so much I wanted as many photos with it as possible. I don’t know anything about blushers. You can definitely find one under $300. Mine was originally $250, but I had a discount that brought it down to $200.

I am completely stumped about veils as well! I know I want one for the ceremony, but which one would look good with the dress?!! Arghh

I wore mine through the first dance, but mine was slightly longer than fingertip and didn’t hang down past the dress… you may want to take it off after the ceremony, because you run a big risk of everyone stepping on it when they crowd around to hug you at the reception or whatever! Nothing says wedding like whiplash from someone stepping on something attached to your head as you’re moving!

Not that it mattered for me- someone stepped on my dress and ripped the bustle. Good times. I did the chicken dance with my sister holding the dress behind me! lol

i also had a moment of love at first sight when at the bridal salon I put the cathedral length veil on with MY dress… my mom started crying and said “You HAVE to get the veil”.

So I did. I’m now having the same “when do I wear it” dilemas as you.

but i’ve decided I’m def not wearing it all night.. and prob will take it off for some pics after formal pics, but may wear it when we are introduced, and potentially for our first dance… though that may be difficult.
oh and my veil was $250.
