Soon after we got engaged, my mother and Mr. S’s mother asked me what I would like them to wear. I honestly didn’t have much input because both of our mothers are pretty stylish. I told them that they could wear whatever they thought would be appropriate for a late-afternoon-into-evening garden wedding, and that if they wanted to match our wedding colors, that would be awesome.
I have total faith that they’ll both look awesome. And I know that neither one of them would want to wear something super traditional like this:

They will both want to look more laid back and trendy.
Now, I’m not too sure what Mr. S’s mother is planning yet, but my mom has been keeping me in the loop with her quest for a dress. As a matter of fact, about two months into the engagement, she e-mailed me about a dress she fell in love with on the Neiman Marcus website.
Too sexy for a mom, maybe? Not when your mom is a smokin’ hottie. Case in point:
Bonus: it goes very nicely with the color palette.
But—the dress was expensive.
Now, something about my mom that I’ve mentioned before is that she is a thrift-store-shopping genius. My mom has three walk-in closets (her own, and the closets in my and my sister’s old bedrooms) that are FULL of hip, trendy clothes that she spent pennies on. My mother wouldn’t even pay full price for a $25 Target dress, let alone drop almost $500 on a designer dress at Neiman’s. So, she said that she’d just wait for it to go on sale.
And it did. It went down to about $300, but by the time that happened, they only had one size left, and it was too big for my mom. But she kept checking the site to see if someone would return one.
And this went on and on for months. She’d e-mail me saying, “Now it’s sold out completely,” and then a few days later, “Someone returned an eight, but it’s too big!” And so on. And so on. She checked the website every day! I got such a kick out of her enthusiasm for this one perfect dress.
And, finally, they had one dress in stock that was my mother’s size. She bought it, and it was delivered a few days later.
Well. The dress runs small. Back it went. And Mom went back to stalking the Neiman Marcus website for the next larger size. And finally, finally, there was a dress in the size that she needed. And—it was on sale for even less! Mom ordered it and it arrived. It doesn’t fit perfectly, but it only needs a few cheap alterations to be ideal.
And that’s how, with a lot of persistence and savvy, my mom found her perfect MOB dress for more than 50% off the original price! I can’t wait to see her in it; I know she’ll look amazing!
Did you give your mother any guidelines for her dress, or did you tell her to wear whatever she wanted?
