Zeb and I have a houseguest for the week. I haven’t introduced you to this particular nephew yet because frankly, he’s not my favorite. Hive, meet Moose.

You may have noticed our lack of furbaby. I’m often worried that Pengy is going to kick me out for not having a pet.
Technically, I have a cat…but she lives with my parents. The running joke in my family is when I’m going to take my cat to our house because no one believes that I am allergic.
My allergies (which of course flair up my asthma) are one of the reasons why we don’t have any pets. The other reason is my small love affair with our couch. Hive, meet our couch. She’s gorgeous and without a pet- looks the same each time we come home from work.

Oh yea, my point. Anyways we’ve got old Moosey Goosey here for 10 days while his parents and brothers frolic around California. I’ve always had and loved pets but Zeb and I have a spontaneous lifestyle and caring for a pet just isn’t a responsibility we want right now. My parents’ Weimaraner also kind of ruined me. He’s loving and cute and consumes about $50 worth of clothes a week. He’s a terror.
Seriously…I have a point. Okay. I’m lazy. I also use my asthma as an excuse to not run. The money for a gym membership isn’t enough motivation to keep this cheap girl dedicated to a schedule. Every day since writing for the ‘Bee, I have set my alarm for 5:45 only to continuously reset the alarm to 6:30 sometimes even 7:00 AM. I know what it takes to put my body in my happy place for it—a less than strict Weight Watchers regime and a 2 mile walk a few times a week. Don’t ask me when the last time was that I actually did any of that, though. I’m not totally happy with certain parts of my body, like many, but I’m just to lazy to put any effort into it. I’m comfortable—which may be an odd way of thinking 5 months before one’s wedding. I probably take about 2500 steps a day during both my days at the desk and my days in the car. I should exercise to keep myself healthy but I just don’t. It’s because of my asthma (see there I go again).

^ that’s a pub table
Moose has to be exercised in order for me to control him. He has pushed me to finally get out of my warm bed at 5:45 and give him a little walk around the block in 32 degree weather. (Enjoy San Diego, Spiffy! I indeed just said 32 degrees.) I feel invigorated and accomplished at work every day. I look forward to when I get home from work so we can take our mile walk and sometimes I even run—sans inhaler puff. Did you see the size of that dog? He’s a gazelle! He has to be run. You know the sad part, though? I’m sore. I’m sore from walking less than a mile at a time. Stupid Zebra.
I don’t need a fancy gym membership to get toned up. All I need is a dog. Wait, what? No. I can’t be. As he’s sitting under my feet gnawing on a bone—I can’t be enjoying this. The company, the protection, the…aww jeez he’s got to go out again—make that 5000 steps a day. I can get used to this motivation.
Maybe my least favorite nephew holds the key to my health after all.
Did you find that the wedding wasn’t enough to motivate you to exercise? Did you find inspiration in an unexpected source?
