Hair Therapy for Thin, Limp Hair

November 4th, 2010 @ 10:09 am by Mrs. Meerkat

When Mr. Meerkat and I moved into our house and started to use city water, I noticed a change in my hair. My hair was always baby fine but it was usually soft and healthy looking. After we moved into our house my hair started to look dull and limp.

At first I thought it was a build up of chemicals from drug store-type shampoos and conditioners. So I went on the hunt for silicone and sulfate free products since they don’t weigh hair down. I started out trying organic products like Avalon clarifying. The shampoo worked well but the conditioner left a wax-like coating on my hair that really didn’t help the problem.

Next I tried Renpure products. They worked really well for the first few times but soon caused a buildup like the Avalon shampoo.

It took me a little while to figure out that the real problem was the minerals in our water. So I gave Neutrogena anti-reside shampoo a try.

And it worked like a champ!! The directions said you could substitute this instead of your usual shampoo and conditioner once a week but my hairstylist told me I could use it up to every other day if I used a good conditioner with it. I have been doing it once to twice a week with L’oreal Everpure conditioner and my hair is back to what it was before we moved. (The key to using the condition is to only put it on the part of your hair that would stick out the back of a pony tail, not near your scalp.)

Now that my hair was back to its normal, soft self I needed to give it a bit of volume. I tried some different mousses from Garnier and L’oreal but it once again was weighing my hair down so I spent an extra couple dollars and gave Thermal Volume by Nexxus a try. Totally worth the extra money. It gave me great volume yet left my hair soft and clean looking.

Thanks to Mrs. Hot Wings, I now know to hold my head upside down while drying and if I need a little extra oomph do a little hairspray on the underside.

Anyone else have thin, limp hair? What products are you using to combat it?

If you are having a water issue. You could change your shower head to one with a filter. When I moved to my new house, I noticed my skin changed, much drier. I added this & it made a huge difference.
“Sprite SL-WH-M Dechlorinating Shower Filter with Massage Head Slim” is the name of mine.

Just another thought.

My hair is baby fine too, but when I do the upside down thing, it sticks straight out. It’s the only time my hair actually works with hair spray and blow dryers. And no, I don’t use a lot of hair spray. I like to run my fingers through my hair. Oh well, at least I don’t have to brush my hair.

Oh, the grass is always greener. I’ve got so much thick, coarse hair. I’ll give you some of mine? :D

Thanks for this post! I too have noticed a change in my hair since moving into a new apartment complex. I might have to pick up some of this shampoo since I’ve been suffering through using dandruff shampoo for months - yuck. Wish I could purchase a filtering shower head per AMFELTS, but unfortunately our shower head can’t be detached. boo.

This is super creepy… I feel like I wrote this post myself! Although I didn’t go through the first few shampoos you tried, I too use Neutrogena 1-2 times/week, EverPure conditioner, with the Nexxus thermal volume mouse. Works like a charm for fine, limp hair… I get asked all the time if I got highlights the day that I use the Neutrogena shampoo too! Other days I just use Paul Mitchell Volumizing and it works pretty well.

My hair is so super fine, once it gets longer than an inch below my chin, it just hangs there all limp and sad. I’m going to try your suggestions out!

Thank you so much for this post! I have super fine hair and now that it is getting longer it gets a bit trickier to make it look good. I’ll definitely have to look into the Nexxus product you mentioned. I’ve also used Paul Mitchell’s Thicken Up and I like it quite a bit.

@AMFELTS: I think I am going to have to try this until I can convince Mr. M. that we need a water softener. His hair is like 1.5 inches long and says he has no problem with the water. *sigh*

@Mrs. Glasses: ROFL! Yes I am in. If we each give 1/2 to the other person we should have some rockin’ hair! :D

I’m definitely going to have to try this combo out. I have fine hair & not a lot of it, so anything I can try to give my hair some body is worth it. Thanks for the tip!

Try a root building or volumizing spray before you blow dry upside down. I have one from Tresemme that I love!

Ever since I was a little kid I have suffered with fine hair. I really hate it. It is hard for me to hold a curl and mousse does not really make a difference, but a good shampoo can make that difference. I found that with the Volume products from Shielo Haircare.

I initially liked Shielos Volume Shampoo because it smells absolutely wonderful! Then I saw the price and I was sold.

That is when I get the best results. I have tried other shampoos that are comparable to this one and they do not add up. I can honestly tell a difference with this shampoo. It is also great for little kids. Sometimes when I am out of my daughters shampoo I let her use this. Although it is not tear free it is four year old friendly. I will continue to purchase this in the future and would suggest it to others.

Asking questions are genuinely good thing if you are not understanding something totally, however this piece of writing presents good understanding yet.
