Go Big

November 4th, 2010 @ 11:41 am by Mrs. Prairie Dog

Once upon a time, I did a brief visual-design stint with my favorite store. And how perfect for a bibliophile like me that at the time I started, the medium for their art was books. Glorious arches of books.

Piles of books, leveled and layered:

(The book on the chair was too precious to use in the construction: a 1930 edition of an Abraham Lincoln biography, in which its owner had handwritten Whitman’s “Oh Captain! My Captain!” It tugged at my literary heart that some reader would carefully connect the poem with the man it was written for. Just lovely.)

But I digress.

Incroyable, non? What a few hundred books, gallons of hot glue, some wooden reinforcements, and a lot of (wo)man hours can do.

This is one of the most important things I learned from my time at Anthropologie: nearly anything you can dream up can be done. It might be expensive or difficult or time consuming…but it can be done. The wedding example that springs to mind is this:

Not only is this ingeniously creative, but it’s complicated and beautiful in execution. And, dare I say, Anthropologie-esque. I would love to ask Sasha Souza how she thought up the now-infamous photobooth wall—and how she knew it could be done.

Or this paper moon from an amazing art-deco wedding:

The thing is, if you can find The Vision…if you can see in your mind how it will be…it can be.

Two other important lessons from my Anthropologie days?

1. “Make it less perfect.” - Imagine if the above photobooth had all matching frames. It would really lose something from the overall effect. Matchy-matchy is a crutch, but you don’t have to lean on it.

2. “Measure twice, cut once.” - I doubt I have to explain this. Let’s just say several of these houses wound up being so small because of my own hurried measurements. It takes ten times longer to fix a mistake than it does to take your time beforehand.

I’ve got a few little projects cooking for the wedding that are a little outside the box. Do you have any crazy, borderline-art-installation ideas for your wedding?

I seriously have a photo gallery on my iPhone of Anthropologie store art displays. I can’t believe you got to work with them - i’d kill for that! So cool!

That is an amazing installation! I’m working on a couple projects that boarder on “installation”–giant paneling and the photo booth back drop to start.

Those poor books! Seriously, I would have such guilt about destroying them like that for a one day event. But that is just me, I’m a little mushy like that.

So jealous that you got to work for Anthro doing visual displays. Can’t wait to see what you’ve got up your sleeve.

I LOVE Anthropolgie’s stores. Every time I’m in there (looking at clothing I can’t afford), I’m in awe of the displays. I was in a few months ago, and there was an enormous rainbow hanging from the ceiling. It was made from lollipops…gorgeous!

@Rubies: actually the books were salvaged from what would have been a kiln or a dumpster. most of them were rejects of libraries and other places- things like outdated self-help books from the 70’s and whatnot. the display was nearly done when i came to the store, so i can’t speak to the decision behind it- but i thought of those books as having one last hurrah.

What a dream job! I always admire the Anthro displays and wonder how I can incorporate that into my home. I’m with Rubies though, I’d be sad to have to glue all those books together. I love that paper moon photo prop too. Almost makes me wish we had a 1920s wedding.

I interned for Anthro over the summer doing visual display- Isn’t it one of the most rewarding jobs?

Anyway, I have absolutely dreamed and imagined huge art installation-esque ideas for my wedding…. but then my venue had to go and be a poop and say that we can’t attach ANYTHING to the walls, ceiling, etc. We can tie things off in certain areas (the sconces, mainly) but beyond that they’ve really cut me off at the knees.

I love the suggestion to measure twice cut once.

@Miss Prairie Dog:

That makes me feel better about it. I guess as a writer I just imagine the author’s words are my words being glued shut forever and get all “Ahhhh! Nooo!” But I am glad they were rescued from a landfill to be a new and different kind of art! Very pretty :)

God, yes! I have several large scale installations that will never see the light of day… scrapped because I’m not assembling them on site the day of (or before) unless someone is willing to lend me some crafty wedding elves??

What a fantastic internship!

Very nice post! It’s nice to see a bride with *really* big ideas and the motivation to complete them to boot!

I always get crazy-big ideas in my head and I either need to mull things over for a bit or have my bf, family or close friends tell me I’m an idiot in order to realize what’s actually doable and what is not worth my time.

It’s awfully fun to be a little creative though : )

What an awesome job!!!! :) I love the moon backdrop- reminds me of an old photo used in the album liner for Siamese Dream by the Smashing Pumpkins. So cute.

btw, happy to see a Cinci bee!!! I LOVE Graeter’s ice cream. SO good!
