Mrs. Giraffe, Chicago Age and Occupation: 23, Graphic Designer Fiance's Age and Occupation: 24, Music Student Teacher Engagement Date: October 23, 2008 Wedding Date: May 2011 Venue: Trinity Lutheran Church & Idlewild Country Club About Me: Coming from the suburbs of the Windy City, you'll often find me with my foot in my mouth while laughing for no reason or telling bad knock knock jokes. I've been crafty for as long as I can remember, and will DIY something twice over before I have someone do it for me. I'm a semi-awkward, typeface obsessed, design junkie and have been know to break out my dance moves for no reason as well as try my best to be ridiculous at all times. My love of pop culture, wordplay, and graph paper almost rivals my love of Mr. Giraffe (who is just the bee's knees). After a 2.5 year engagement, we're planning a modern-in-disguise traditional wedding, and cannot wait!
About Mrs. Giraffe

I know I may have alluded to it before, but I realized I haven’t talked about my ring yet!

When Mr. Giraffe and I first kind of started talking about rings, what I wanted was simple; I had no interest in getting a ring. This wasn’t metaphorical at all. I want(ed) to marry him, but I just didn’t want a ring.

You see, I own no jewelry—none at all. I wear a nine-dollar watch every day, but that’s it. Jewelry freaks me out—the idea of wearing weird shiny stuff and the feeling of it against your skin? Major heebie jeebies! I have no interest in it at all, and I’ve alway been this way. I’ve never had any interest in “bling,” and I’ve actually gone out of my way to avoid it.

My mom says that after Mr. Giraffe told her he was going to propose to me, her first thought was, “Oh no, I don’t know if Miss Giraffe will wear a ring!” She didn’t say this to Mr. G, of course.

I know that plenty of girls have no-ring engagements, so what changed for me? Well, back in college, one weekend my friends H and D came to visit. This had all been planned, but what hadn’t been planned was that they had just gotten engaged, and they surprised us with the news. It was super fun. Then H took out her ring to show us. (She wasn’t wearing it because she wanted to surprise everyone.)

I’m not sure why, but after that I wanted my own ring. (I also wanted to be engaged, which kick-started a whole crazy six months of waiting, but that’s a different story.)

The only thing, though? I may have wanted a ring, but I didn’t want a traditional ring. I wanted something different. As a quirky and offbeat person, I wanted something that suited me. When Mr. G asked, I told him what I wanted: nothing big, nothing obnoxious, nothing “sticky out-y” (my exact words), and no diamonds.

Yeah, I gave him a whole lot to work with. On top of all that, I didn’t own any rings, so we had no idea what my ring size was, and all those sneaky tips for guys planning to propose (like pressing a girl’s ring into a piece of bread) to figure out her size didn’t apply to us.

He ended up with going with a 6 3/4 size ring, which fits perfectly. He picked out a blue sapphire ring—which is his birthstone, so it keeps him with me. I also told BM Marie that I “hate yellow gold” shortly before he gave me the ring. But I love my ring more than anything else! I wouldn’t make any changes; it’s perfect.

I know, less talking, more photos. Like I said, I wouldn’t want my ring any other way. Mr G. found something that fits me perfectly (literally and symbolically); he’s the best. :)

Mine is pretty non-traditional. It hardly sticks out and everyone is always commenting how unique it is. It’s 3 hearts with stones (I think diamonds? but I’m not sure and I don’t really care) in the center of the hearts. It’s perfect for me and for our relationship.

That’s so pretty! Mine is an emerald. I also don’t like yellow gold (or jewelry) but I love it in my ring.

Love your ring! :)

I’m def. a non-traditional ring gal. Mine is made by Metalicious on Etsy. It LOOKS like a huge 1 karat diamond but it’s actually 100% metal. The band is gold and the rock is silver. Only costs about $75- but I love love love it. :)

I looooooove sapphires! My engagement ring was a solitaire diamond, but the band is a wrap that will surround the diamond with sapphires on each side. Yours is so pretty!! Love it, Miss G!

I wanted an amethyst, but FI went for more traditional, although my setting is quite unique and I always have people commenting on it. Have even had ppl walk ovr, total strangers, and admire it, so it mus be very shiny…lol…love your ring though!

Beautiful!

I have a very non-traditional engagement ring, it’s a 1920s dressing table! I’m not much of a fan of rings, so i didn’t want an engagement ring at all and i’ll be having a very plain band as a wedding ring.

^_^ mine is pretty non-traditional even by non-traditional standards. I have an Australian black opal, which I love love love. A lot of people think opals are too soft for daily wear, but honestly with just a little care they are fine ^_^
I love your ring miss g! That shade of blue is drop dead gorgeous.

I totally agree. I wanted an engagement horse, but that didn’t happen. I ended up with a titanium-white gold band with mystic topaz gem that I love and can actually wear! I’m MAJORLY allergic to ALL metals (ie: alluminium in deodorant) so it’s nice that I can wear it and even enjoy it since I wear no jewelry either.

Haha, I also used the words “stick out-y”…I ended up with a bezel-set antique sapphire ring with small diamonds on the sides. My wedding band is also a sapphire eternity band, channel set in white gold. I absolutely love both of my rings, and I get complimented on them all of the time! Hooray for sapphires!

Wow, I LOVE LOVE LOVE your ring. It’s basically exactly what I’m looking for. My SO and I are going ring shopping after Thanksgiving (eee!!!), and I really want a blue sapphire in yellow gold with side diamonds :-)

Your ring is gorgeous!!! I wanted a non-traditional ring (well honestly, I had requested NO RING…but my sweetie caved to the pressure of his mother and sister), but I got a white gold, three stone princess cut diamond ring. He picked out two rings, one with a peridot and the other a pearl and white gold ring, but his mom and sister VETOED both of them, saying they weren’t “engagement-y” enough! It’s too bad, but I would’ve loved a non traditional ring! :D
