Ms. Cheetah, Los Angeles/Palm Springs Age and Occupation: 31, Artist, Educator Fiance's Age and Occupation: 32, TV Finance Engagement Date: April 2010 Wedding Date: March 2011 Venue: The Viceroy About Me: I’m a silly, sassy lady with a compulsion to create. I love to sing and dance, despite the fact that I lack any talent doing either. I somehow manage to be messy and organized at the same time. I like to spend my days road tripping, watching '80s movies, reading true crime books, buying things on sale, sending postcards, playing board games, dining at food trucks, snuggling, and drinking ginger ale. I have a weak spot for all things sweet, especially Mr. Cheetah! I’m a Chicago girl and he’s a Nor Cal boy but we love living in the City of Angels. After 10 years as a couple we are planning a fun-filled semi-destination wedding in Palm Springs. Hope you enjoy the ride!

Choosing a Wedding

November 5th, 2010 @ 3:09 pm by Ms Cheetah

Deciding to get married does not necessarily mean having a big party with guests, food, dancing, fancy dresses, a wedding party, etc. The Cheetahs endorse weddings of all kinds from big traditional ballroom weddings to private island elopements to backyard barbecues.

Traditional I Dos or Underwater Vows

Mr. Cheetah and I discussed having many different types of weddings; going to the courthouse (perhaps the Santa Barbara courthouse), a destination wedding (renting a large house in some dreamy locale for immediate family and very close friends), to an all inclusive big wedding (250ish guests in a modern loft), to what we ultimately chose:

A semi-intimate, semi-destination wedding for about 130 guests with many of the standard trimmings (dinner, dancing, wedding party, toasts…). It’s perfect for us, but it was important to us to go over all the options, especially since weddings ain’t free and we wanted to consider other people’s hopes and expectations (like our parents’).

So, why did we choose to have a big ol’ wedding?

  • We are blessed with family & friends who want to be there and watch us be wed-and party afterwards.
  • Tying the knot is a big deal to us and we want to celebrate it in a big way.
  • I can’t imagine not having our families there with us—and my family is kind of big.
  • This is likely the only chance we’ll have to have a big party with all (most) of our nearest and dearest from all over the world.
  • I love weddings. I love the dresses, the flowers, all the little details, the photos (ah, the photos!). I even love wedding/party planning.
  • It’s going to be crazy fun.

What kind of wedding did you choose? Was it a hard decision?

I’m doing a big ol’ wedding. Left to me, I’d do 50 people, in a nice small intimate gathering but that is so not the style of my whole family nor his. We’d end up disappointing sooooo many people just to make two of us happy so bigger it was. But I put my foot down at 175-200. I heard of this lady from my part of the world who had 800 guests at her wedding in MD. Yikes :(

We made the same decision for the same reasons, except a few hundred miles north. :)

We took the same option as you! Semi-destination and semi-intimate, but neither of our families are very large so we’re hoping to keep it to about 90 people.

Small semi-destination wedding (40 ppl) + civil ceremony with just us. Perfect for us.

I totally get you. We had a courthouse wedding but it was not as meaningful as our big wedding, for all the reasons you listed.

I get you too. We have thought about eloping SO many times, and were even encouraged to by some people to save money….but in the end we chose to have a biggish wedding instead, and I think I will be really glad we did, for similar reasons to you.

We would have done a destination wedding, but with both sides having older grandparents we decided to just have the nice traditional wedding. We wanted all the family to be there, thus, no destination wedding for us!

It was only a hard decision when we started seeing dollar signs. Just kidding. . . kind of. But, in the end, this big huge traditional party we’re having? I can’t picture it any other way!

That sounds like a good wedding compromise! I wanted 50 people max but my Fiance (having only talked about it once or twice) said it would be ridiculous to have such a small wedding considering our families are not small =/ which also cancelled out destination wedding…We might end up doing what you are doing!

We considered several options, and ended up pretty much where you did, for pretty much the same reasons!

We’re having a semi-destination wedding, slightly more intimate than yours (80-90 people). The only difference: I didn’t KNOW I loved weddings, and planning weddings, until I started to do it. But I do love a good party, and it IS going to be crazy fun. :)

I was thinking small (like 60). My hubby said, 100 is small, right? Until I showed him catering estimates of upwards of $100 pp for dinner. Wound up inviting 80, figuring we’d get 60-65, and came in at 48 adults and 7 kids, which was just about perfect.
