The Accessories: Help!

November 5th, 2010 @ 9:41 am by Mrs. Brooch

When did you start shopping for accessories?

Since finding my dress, accessories are all I can think about. I’m a little gun shy, though. It’s hard not having my dress to try on with the accessories. Usually—I don’t know about you—I look at myself in the mirror in whatever I have on before I actually walk out the door. With the cost of hairpins and pearls being so high, I can’t afford to shop ’til I drop and later decide the set doesn’t go with my dress.

Now, I realize you STILL haven’t seen my gown. I suck. Sorry, I know. I’ve made you wait forever. But I still would like your help finding accessories.

See, I don’t know if I want something subtle and more traditional, like one of these sets:

Something more bold with  homemade charm, like these necklaces:

Or something more glam and sparkly, like this:

There are way too many options for such an indecisive bride! Sheesh!

There’s also the option of wearing something I already have, or wearing something passed down from my grandmother or mom. What did you do?

Did you wear a lot of jewelry on your wedding day and wish you would have worn less or vice versa?

Did you buy your accessories after your dress was ordered?

my accessories were actually very minimal and I was happy with that but I love statement necklaces like your second set!

You have picked out some beautiful accessories! I had my necklace & earrings and jewelry for my bridal party custom made by http://www.AFinishingTouch.etsy.com and I started working with them about 3 months before my wedding. They have a turn around time of 2 weeks for anything custom so 3 months ahead was more than enough lead time.

If I were you, I would wear something with sentimental value. I ended up borrowing the earrings that my BM Lauren made and wore to her wedding, and it was so special for me. I wore minimal jewelry - just the earrings and a faux pearl bracelet I purchased at Macy’s for $11. I would keep jewelry minimal, especially if your dress has bling on it!

We cant help with the jewelry until we’ve seen the dress! I think you’ve drawn this whole thing out long enough! For instance the whole “which dress is best?” post when you weren’t going to even pick one of those? The hive strives to be helpful, so i would like to be helpful with a purpose.

Missy, we need to see your dress first :D My dress had a small, diamond brooch on it so any jewelry I picked out needed to match that. In the end I went with classic, vintage pearls from my grandmother. I wanted to go all out with something statement-y but I thought my dress was a statement all on it’s own. I hope you find something perfect!

@linda: Unnecessary snark is unnecessary.

@linda: Linda, I actually posted “which dress is best” BEFORE I knew I was going to Kleinfeld, and adding dresses more the list, which I explained in the posts following. Sorry that you’ve felt gipped. I was actually 100 percent to prepared to buy ONE of those dresses (probably 5, 9, or 11), when I got the opportunity to go to Kleinfeld. The reason I still haven’t revealed the dress (believe me, I’m dying too) is because I’m waiting to hear from TLC whether I’m allowed to or not (before the show airs)! Anywho, I was just asking for suggestion on places to look for wedding day jewelry, and asking for personal experiences in whether the hive girls felt better in minimal or heavy pieces :)

@Mrs. Glasses: I know! Boo! I definitely agree with you and @Jellyfish that sentimental is a good avenue. Especially b/c that’s more cost effective, too! :) :) :)

I am not a huge fan of sets because I don’t like things to be super matchy. And regarding heirloom jewelry, you could always mix a few pieces in with something new for a look that is your own. My family does not have heirloom jewelry, so this was not an option for me. Personally, I bought my jewelry after I purchased my dress. Previously, I had bought a sparkly headband to wear with my dress, but it wasn’t until I actually found my dress that I knew I really wanted to wear a statement necklace. Needless to say, I never wore the headband (which I spent quite a bit of money on). My advice would be to wait until you have the dress, and then try jewelry on while wearing it. That way you don’t end up with pieces that you don’t use and can’t return because it has been too long (or they are custom). For me, I have just the right amount of jewelry on with my dress — La Sposa Fanal — I opted for diamond solitaires, a big bold necklace, and a cuff bracelet. Then again, I don’t wear jewelry (except my ring) on a regular basis, so that was a decent amount for me.

@linda: While your comment about needing to see the dress is valid, the rudeness was not. Relax! She’ll show us the dress when she can, and if she can’t show us the exact one, maybe she can give us a general idea.

I’m thinking of buying some fun, modern pieces from this seller http://www.shineyobject.etsy.com

I’ve been in contact with her and she’s super helpful and it’s nice to know I can customize my jewelry up until the last minute if I want. Plus I can get matching stuff for all my bridesmaids! Double SCORE!

@Miss Brooch, can’t wait to see the dress, either on TV or on the hive!!! How exciting!

OMG that layered necklace is to DIE for! I’m excited that it’s a DIY, but gosh I wish it were just in an Etsy store so I could buy it outright!

I ended up going more blingy with my accessories. My dress has a brooch (!!) on the front and I knew I’d be wearing a small diamond pendant that was a gift from my grandmother, so I just went with sparkly earrings as well. I’ll probably forgo a bracelet because I don’t want to overdo it.

I wore the pearl necklace and earring set that I had received as a bridesmaid in my brother’s wedding, along with a tiny diamond pendant necklace that was the first jewelry my dad ever bought for my mom. (The diamond necklace was my something borrowed.) My jewelry was understated and classic, but I loved that it had sentimental value! Good luck choosing!
