Mrs. Lioness's Picture
Mrs. Lioness, Atlanta Age and Occupation: 25, Physical Therapist Fiance's Age and Occupation: 25, Attorney Engagement Date: August 29, 2009 Wedding Date: April 2011 Venue: Anthony’s Fine Dining About Me: I’m a Southern girl with New England roots. I say "wicked" and "y’all" in the same sentence and I like to drink sweet tea with my lobster. Mr. Lion and I are both former Floridians now living in Atlanta, which fortunately is still SEC country...Go Gators! We both love baseball, coffee, traveling, cooking, and playing Words with Friends with each other on our iPhones all day long. I’m very passionate about the things and the people I love, and I tend to plan things with all of my heart...our wedding, of course, is no different! Oh, and also Mr. Lion is a first generation American of Cuban descent. I may look more like Lucy than Ricky, but I’m doing my best to incorporate some Latin elements into our vintage-garden-Southern wedding!
About Mrs. Lioness

Sweet Customer Service

November 5th, 2010 @ 10:09 am by Mrs. Lioness

One thing I’ve noticed about choosing vendors is that I’m very consistent with my priorities. Obviously, quality is important. I’m also really big on value for our dollar, since these newly-employed Lions have lots of student loans to pay off. But customer service trumps all. I would give up the highest quality if it meant I could deal with a competent and empathic human being. I would even sacrifice other parts of the budget to pay a little more for good service.

I can’t help it…it’s just the way I grew up. You see, Papa Lioness works for a large hotel chain and “teaches customer service for a living.” Just imagine the horror on a 14-year-old Lioness’ face as Papa Lioness scolded the Abercrombie employee, “When you say ’have a nice day,’ you should at least TRY to sound like you mean it!” It has been ingrained in my mind to avoid poor customer service as much as possible, no matter how enticing the quality or value may be. In the long run, what’s a little sacrifice for a little less stress? So far, we’ve chosen all of our vendors based on this motto. Everyone has been easy to communicate with and easy to get along with. Our cake tasting was no different.

In true Southern tradition, we decided on a groom’s cake.

Mr. Lion knew early on that he wanted some kind of chocolatey raspberry goodness in the shape of Knightro, UCF’s mascot. But what to do about the actual wedding cake? As you may recall from our engagement party, I love cupcakes. The more I thought about it, the more appropriate they seemed for our wedding. The portions were perfect for daytime, and the cuteness factor helped them to fit in perfectly with our whimsical theme.

Before I could even start researching local bakers, Mr. Lion came home from work one day with half a dozen cupcakes. Oh it’s just this little bakery right next to his law firm and he just happened to walk by and it looked like the kind of thing I would like. (Seriously, be more awesome.) They were beautiful, and absolutely delicious. I then sent Mr. Lion on his next mission: to make an appointment for a tasting.

We walked into the cupcakery on a Thursday afternoon. We were greeted by Jack Johnson on the baker’s iPod speakers, as well as a Cinderella snow globe on the front counter. Sure, it’s nothing but coincidence, but I had a good feeling about this place. Long tables stood to my left, each with a different tablecloth and vintage milk glass vases. Colorful bunting lined the walls. It looked like something out of…well…a wedding inspiration board!

One table was set with mismatched china and silverware, as well as a fresh French press of coffee.

That same table had a beautiful cake stand topped with several flawless-looking cupcakes. Hmmm…perhaps this table was set for us?

Mr. Lion could hardly contain his excitement.

We sat down with a lovely consultant who shared a cup of coffee with us and told us about their baking process and what goes into all of these delicious flavors. She told us about each type of cupcake, from the margarita cupcake filled with lime zest to the Coca Cola cupcake (be still, my Atlantan heart). It was very laid back; it just felt like having a snack with a friend. I really appreciated the fact that there was no pressure to sign anything or to pay anything. And you know what? Because of that, I couldn’t reach for the contract fast enough!

A week or so later, Mr. Lion came home with (you guessed it) more cupcakes. Apparently, they had some other flavors that day and they wanted us to be able to try a few more. So they just dropped them off at his firm! The whole thing just seemed so kind and neighborly. Those little extras make all the difference.

We haven’t decided on exact flavors yet, but we’re thinking of including three different light and fruity flavors, since Mr. Lion’s cake will be so rich. If I may offer some advice to brides out there with upcoming tastings: watch your sugar intake that day! We seriously ate all of them. I was immediately five years old, bouncing off of the walls for a few hours, and then I crashed. Sugar hangovers are no fun! And if I may offer some advice to anyone out there in the wedding biz, your brides notice details! Remember that the little things can make all the difference.

How has customer service shaped your wedding vendor decisions?

Wow! Those cupcakes look delish!

And ITA that good customer service is key. Our photographer is the same person who did the pictures for my parents wedding anniversary party. We’re going back to him because of the wonderful job he did last time, from working with us on what types & styles of pictures we wanted through delivery of the final CD.

Plus we hired him originally because of good experiences with a colleague of his, who wasn’t available on the date we wanted. Rather than blowing us off with the standard “sorry, can’t do it” we had a wonderful response where the unavailable photographer suggested a couple of folks who he thought might be available together with comments on their style of work & how to best contact them so we got a rapid response due to our tight time line. Just a wonderful experience, particularly since he knew we weren’t going to be hiring him and someone I’d have no hesitation in contacting again.

Okay, that sounds amazing! The whole time reading through, I was afraid your story was going to end with “But then they made a major customer service faux pas, and we will not be using their services.” I’m so glad it had a happy ending instead!

OMG that sounds amazing. I so wish we didn’t got the DIY route on this so we could have tasting after tasting…

I’ve absolutely chosen vendors based on their customer service. I emailed a lot of photographers and got a ton of cookie-cutter responses back, and then one email stood out shining above the rest: He talked about how he and his wife love photographing our venue and about how, when they were driving by it the other day, they were commenting that they hadn’t done a wedding there in a while. He was “excited” to discuss my wedding in further detail; he didn’t just send me a list of prices. After I talked with him on the phone (long-distance bride) and found him to be sociable and enthusiastic as well as talented, I booked him.

I’m glad someone else out there takes customer service as seriously as I do!

I base so many wedding vendor choices on good vendor service- if they dont give me good service then I take them off my list off options!

I wholeheartedly agree with the customer service aspect. Though, having worked in customer service, I also have a perspective from the other side of the counter. People: if you go in rude, demanding and ugly, guess what you’ll get back? I could be having a total craptacular day and one super awesome customer was enough to turn it around. And then I was nicer to all the other customers. See how that works?

Also, vendors, it’s important to remember that the best referrals come from word of mouth. I have worked with a photographer on three shoots now, and referred several friends who booked her, because she is totally awesome on top of being talented. Advertising is expensive so just think that everything you do is “buying” free advertising in the form of good referrals.

Wow, those cupcakes look awesome! At least two vendors I was interested in for different things completely lost out on my business due to their customer service. A hair stylist that charges $200 for wedding day hair and doesn’t bother to answer my email for a week, no thank you.

WOW! That place sounds great! I might need to look into them!
I’m not engaged yet, but I use customer service for all my buying power. :) I had RTG workers be rude to me by ignoring me 2 months before I closed on my house. So when I closed, I went to Ashley’s and bought all the house furniture. :) I don’t like to give my money to people who can’t even be cordial to me.
