Back to the Bridesmaids…

November 6th, 2010 @ 5:50 pm by Mrs. Brooch

I said yes to the dress, and now it’s time for my five bridesmaids to say yes to their dresses!

They’re so easy: “Just tell us what you want us to wear!”

If only it were that simple! Let’s see, where should we start? My inspiration file? Yes, please!

Here are a few of my favorite bridesmaid pictures EVER:

Who am I kidding? The favorites list goes on for days. Sigh.

The inspiration isn’t helping anymore, though. In fact, such gorgeousness is making it even harder to visualize OUR wedding party.

Let me catch you up to speed: here, here, here, and here. I’m all over the map. As you can see, I like everything. Love long, short, flowy, tight, pink, green, shades of either, two-toned, ruffles, flowers, blah blah blah blah blah…please don’t tell me this going to be as tough as picking my dress was! God help me!

Alright, so it’s not as bad it looks. There’s a lot of inspiration, yes, but I have sorta started narrowing down the list. A bit. Here are some of MY favorites:

Jim Hjelm:

Love the shiny material and the flower appliques. LOVE the flower appliques.

Bari Jay:

Love the flowy and soft feel of these gowns. Perfect for a garden wedding, right?

Lela Rose:

What girl can resist those pretty rose necklines? Too cute!

And, that’s all I’ve got folks.

After all that searching, I’m still not satisfied. We ARE making progress though, right?

How did you pick your bridesmaids’ dresses?

Where did you search?

J Crew! Your 4th picture has the sophia, juliet and twist-tank styles… love the different shades of pink/rose, too! :)

We bought ours at the wedding shop at Nordstrom’s…it worked out great because my MOH was easily able to exchange her dress 5 months later from a size 4 to a size 10 (she was pregnant). They also do alterations, and you get a wedding stylist to assist you through the whole process. Very easy, and everyone loved the dresses. Oh and the dresses also went on sale from $168 to $109, and some of the girls actually brought them back and repurchased them for a refund of the difference.

I love the soft and flowy ones…and those deep color dresses like the purple and dark green are so rich, love them. And I love the first picture, the bridesmaid dresses are unique.

awesome choices!

i’d say let the ladies try them on and choose for themselves. i’m sure different dresses flatter different people!

Lovely pictures and potential dresses! In the inspiration pictures there is definitely a certain energy coming from them. The main consistency I see is that all of the brdesmaids and brides look genuinely happy with huge smiles on their faces regardless of what they are wearing:)

I took a couple of my bridesmaids shopping, and they tried on a whole bunch of dresses to see which styles fit the best. We narrowed it down from there.

I decided on a Wtoo (Watter’s brand) bridesmaid gown. Just an idea :)

check out amsale’s bridesmaid dress collection - i ended up choosing them and their charcoal grey. they run a bit more, but less than lela rose. PLUS they silk chiffon gowns are 100% silk, and any style you see in short that you like…also comes in long!

I vote that you let your bridesmaids decide… particularly since you have described yourself as as “indecisive” bride. They can pick either one or multiple styles that fit them best and then they’ll be guaranteed to like them. My girls picked their dresses in less than 30 minutes. In and out. Done. It was great!

I LOVED the Jim Hjelm dresses (like the two you posted) on their website, so I headed to P Lawrence (where I bought my wedding dress), since they have Jim Hjelm bridesmaid dresses. I found that while a lot of them look GREAT online and on the models, they just didn’t look that flattering on real people, aka my bridesmaids. I’m not sure what it was, maybe the Jim Hjelm dresses are just too fashion forward to look good on real bodies. It could have also been the ones we tried on. P Lawrence did not have some of my favorites from the website, so we were limited as to what we could see in person. We ended up going with a Bill Levkoff dress, which was cheaper (yay!), and looked PHENOMENAL on all of my girls!! I wasn’t a huge fan of Bill Levkoff dresses on his website, but they looked so great on, and also looked excellent in the pictures.

I think it is just a matter of going out and trying things on - since you don’t sound too particular about style, designer, etc., just go with what looks good!

I just told my girls to go find their own dresses. Maybe it was mean of me, but I didn’t want to be the one to dress them. :)

I went CRAZY looking at bridesmaid dresses.. It seriously took me forever. But I ended up picking Alfred Angelo style number 6471. I think its so pretty for a garden wedding in April (which we are having as well!!) There are no flower on the dress but it’s super cute and I think it’s the type of dress that can be wore again.. and I couldn’t beat the price!

@smw332: I completely agree on the Jim Hjelm dresses. They were amazing in pictures, but not so great at the store. I ended up going with a dress from Jasmine Bridals.

@theresa1078: I LOVE this idea! Nordstrom is a place my BMs and I LOVE to shop! Didn’t realize they had possible dresses. Yay! Thank you :) @Mrs. Glasses: @mrspaetz: @Miss Hippo: I totally agree with all of you! I think it’s a win-win to let them chose! I don’t have to make the decision and they get dresses they love!

@Susie Q: Actually I thought of that! They ARE the type of gowns that you can pull off in pictures (maybe) but not so much in person. Thanks for the insight :)

I’m usually not a DB fan but my bridesmaids were located ALL OVER the US and I just don’t trust having measurements taken, mailing them in someplace, and waiting to see if it fits. So David’s Bridal was truly the best fit for me. However, when choosing dresses, I chose dresses based on my bridesmaids body type. Quite frankly what they wore ended up being one of the details most complimented on the day of our wedding. It’s easier to picka dress (or a couple) that flatters each body type then to hope/expect/wish (whichever applies to you) that they will form their body to the dress.

This is one thing I’m seriously stressing about, what my girls will wear, its crazy! The picture from sugarloveweddings.com seriously made me change the colors in my wedding, no joke. Good luck, and I can’t wait to see what you come up with because I feel like I’m right there with ya!
