About Mrs. Meerkat

Boobs, Bustles and Crinoline

November 7th, 2010 @ 11:25 am by Mrs. Meerkat

This past weekend we had our very first dress fitting with Mama-In-Law Meerkat’s friend L. who is an amazing seamstress!

First thing Seamstress L. did was take a look at the pattern we got for the bridesmaids’ dresses and the material we brought. Truthfully, I was biting my nails with worry that I had got the wrong stuff, but she said what we picked was perfect and the pattern was very simple. (Yay…score one for the Meerkats!)

Ten minutes later both Sister-In-Law Meerkat and Bridesmaids K were finished being measured and it was time to work on my dress.

There were really only three things I needed to have added to it; some boobs, a bustle and crinoline. I got really lucky because I didn’t have to have anything let out or taken in. Plus, the petite cut we bought was just the right length for my short little body, so we don’t need to do any hemming. YAY!

First things first. I needed to have a set of boobs installed into the dress. My tiny little set just wasn’t filling out the dress very well. Don’t worry, I didn’t go all crazy or anything with the cups. We added in my normal size and gave it just a little extra to finish filling the dress out:

Seamstress L. even had me bend over to make sure there was nothing showing or falling out.

I also asked Seamstress L. to add a bustle to the dress. She is going to put one hook in and if the material is too heavy then she will add two more on the sides of the first to help hold it better:

The last thing I wanted was to make the bottom of the skirt fuller. I had tried on a mermaid slip at David’s Bridal but it didn’t fill it out enough. What I really wanted was more like this:

I love how the model’s dress looks full at the bottom but still sleek on the top and middle of the skirt. So Seamstress L. told us the secret the designers use. They add a triple thick layer of crinoline to the bottom eight inches of the slip. So, that is what she is going to do for me. We have a follow up appointment at the end of the month so hopefully all my alterations will be done and I can take my dress home!

Pretty! I love that you added boobs, I always have to do that with dresses :-)
Out of curiosity, how tall are you? I’m on the shorter side and hadn’t thought about ordering a petite gown before, but if that could save on alterations costs that might be a good idea.

Ooo, I love hearing designer secrets. And the dress is so pretty, I love the simple cut combined with the intricate beading.

That is so great that you have a seamstress friend. You know you will get top notch service and work because she cares about your wedding. I always have to add boobs to my dresses as well :)

Looks great. I would recommend adding the extra hooks for the bustle, just to be safe. At my wedding and my bf wedding this year both of our bustles did not hold up. Her dress was really heavy, but my dress was not heavy at all!

this may be a silly question…but how did you get your corset laced up back to stay like that? where is the end of the laces? i’ve always seen them tied ina bow at the end but i LOVE the way you’ve done yours.
you look gorgeous by the way and i love your dress!

Your dress is perfect–can’t wait to see you in it after the alterations! And I have to remember to bend over to make sure the ladies don’t fall out when I have my fittings!

@CantWaitToBeWed: When you lace the corset (top to bottom), you can either tie a bow, or just tuck the ends (tie them in a knot or a bow first) into the space at the bottom - you just kind of tuck it inside.

@SadieBee: I’m a little short of 5′4″. I think she said that with the Sottero & Midgley gowns it makes them 6″ inches shorter.

@CantWaitToBeWed: mak418 is right. Lace from the top down then after you have it pulled good and tight, stuff the ends back down through the dress and tie in a know from underneath. If the laces are too long you can cut them shorter and hem them. :D

@kate: Mine is a Sottero & Midgley RSM1036. I know Maggie makes one very similar without the long train called Libby. Is that the one you got?! :D

PLEASE have your seamstress add the extra side hooks for your bustle. I had one hook for mine and it broke five minutes after I bustled it…I spent the rest of the night dragging my train around behind me and it drove me crazy!

Yes, absolutely get more than one point for your bustle! Every wedding I have been to with a single point bustle similar to the one you are describing has broke during the night. I think because you often don’t go back to seamstresses who do wedding alterations for anything post-wedding that they may not know that the wear and tear of your dress will rip that single point bustle right out

I love that silhouette! I may have to try that crinoline trick for myself…
