Mrs. Hippo, New York City/Dallas, TX Age and Occupation: 34, Event Planner for a Non-Profit Fiance's Age and Occupation: 35, Finance IT Engagement Date: August 8, 2009 Wedding Date: March 2011 Venue: Samuel Lynne Galleries and Marc Events About Me: I’m a thirty-something bride living in New York City and planning a modern-ish wedding in Dallas, Texas. I love trashy reality television (Jersey Shore, anyone?), online shopping, Sunday brunch, Central Park, and random celebrity spottings on the streets of Manhattan. While I love NYC, I miss good Tex-Mex, my college friends, central A/C, and being in close proximity to a Target. I’m thrilled to finally be planning an event that’s not work-related and to be marrying my best friend in what I hope will be a unique and personal ceremony followed by a reception with plenty of good food, good drinks, and dancing (regardless if it’s good or not).

Mosquitoes Love Me

November 7th, 2010 @ 1:20 pm by Mrs. Hippo

They really do. If there is one mosquito in a room, it will find me. I can be in a room with 15 other people and one mosquito, and it will bypass everyone else and come after me. It’s really a problem. During our engagement shoot, those little critters were everywhere, and while it looks like I’m enjoying myself here, they are seriously biting the crap out of my legs. Not OK.

The wedding we went to recently (where I had major wedding envy) had an outdoor ceremony, and in addition to fan programs, guests were able to take these mosquito repellent wipes as they entered the ceremony space. Genius!

I grabbed one of the Off! towelettes before sitting for the ceremony, and decided to wait until the first bite to bathe myself with it. Luckily, I didn’t end up needing it, but I was relieved to have it on hand just in case. We’re not having an outdoor ceremony, but if we were, these would be an absolute must. And as a wedding guest, it was a much appreciated gesture.

What other things have you seen at outdoor weddings to make guests more comfortable?

Ughh! I feel your pain! i am a mosquito magnet. I love those wipes because they don’t have the heavy repellent scent like some sprays and are much easier to use. I plan on having these in the emergency kit in case guests start slapping themselves silly during the ceremony/reception

I’ve never been to an outdoor wedding but as someone who grew up in Africa, I’ve had more than my fair share of mosquito bites. And way more malaria fevers than I care to even remember. I’m glad you didn’t have any mosquito bites at the ceremony you went to.

Mosquitos love me too! We laid down in the grass for some of our e pics. I had mosquitos biting my face. In fact, in some of our pics, you can see a big welt on the back of my leg (although I’m sure we can photoshop those out).

Those wipes are a fantastic idea, especially if it’s not feasible to professionally spray a day in advance, run propane repellents or light citronella candles. Can you tell I’ve thought about this already? Mosquitoes are definitely a concern for our outdoor ceremony and reception. (They love me too. @#$* bugs!)

That is really helpful to know, as we are having an outdoor ceremony and reception. Thanks a ton!

I was a program attendant at a wedding in a park recently where the bugs were BAD - good thing we noticed during the rehearsal, because I sent my fiance to the drugstore to grab a can of Off, and oh boy did it come in handy! My fellow program attendant and I stood at the entrance of the aisle, and as guests arrived, we offered them a program, ecofetti, an Izzy soda, and bug spray - and let me tell you how happy there were to have it!! Most people laughed, and I don’t think a single person found it to be tacky or strange that we had the cans sitting there.

I went to a summer wedding in North Carolina and was being EATEN ALIVE by mosquitoes until one of the bridesmaids came back from an emergency run to a local drugstore with 2 bags full of OFF. The rest of the night was awesome.. but it could’ve been really bad had we not had any bug spray the whole night.

I’m a total magnet too! I’ve heard putting a dryer sheet in your pocket works wonders as well.

LOL I have the same problem! Except I hate spraying that stuff all over me…it smells and your skin feels sticky. Does anyone have any recommendations on a good spray or lotion that doesn’t make you feel gross?

What a thoughtful idea for an outdoor wedding! You could even put them in baskets or little customized velum envelopes or something.

Mr. Oyster says that when we are outside together, he doesn’t even need bug spray, because the bugs just bypass him and go straight to me. He likes to joke that I am his “personal bug repellent.” :\

Ugh! I had the same problem with our E-pictures. I was torn up. I’m allergic to mosquito bites, so the bites swell up to like size of a golf ball…and they love me..I feel your pain!

My mom always say they go after me because my blood is so sweet. I hate those bites! This is a good idea that we may need to add into our outdoor wedding plans, thanks!

As someone who ended up receiving the lovely gift of 15+ mosquito bites on her wedding day, I would totally recommend some sort of bug repellent for anyone who is having an outdoor wedding!

I did provide bottled water and fans though.

My planner talked me into having a “hydration station” at our ceremony for people that were milling around - intially I rolled my eyes, but it was the hit of the (v-e-r-y hot) ceremony! Also, some cheapie umbrellas and fans I got were used all the way through the ceremony to the dance floor at our semi-covered reception…who knew?
