About Mrs. Cinnamon Bun

Miss Cinnamon Bun!

November 8th, 2010 @ 12:53 pm by Mrs. Cinnamon Bun

Yesterday was a tiring, come-home-with-your-brain-fried day at work. Because winter is coming, I walked to work in the semi-dark, and walked home in the nearly dark. I spent the evening like most evenings since getting engaged: sitting at my computer desk, poking about on Etsy, writing a blog post, wandering some of my favourite wedding blogs. It got late, and I decided to check my e-mail one more time before going to bed. That’s when I found it! The e-mail saying I’d been accepted as a Weddingbee blogger! I was still pretty wiped from work, so I didn’t manage screams or fun dances like some of the bees before me, but I was dancing on the inside!

I feel like I need to buy these felt buns from MainStreetBowtique to sit on my desk!

I ended up staying up for another couple hours because of the excitement until Mr. Cinnamon Bun (or just “Cinnamon Buns,” as he prefers) came home from work just after midnight. We curled up in bed, looked at the characters available on my iPhone, and picked out Cinnamon Bun together. I have to say that it was a very hard choice for me, as breakfast is my favourite of all meals. If I’m eating breakfast or brunch in a restaurant, 99% of the time I order French toast. I love oatmeal at home. I love scones and tea! I heart making jam! I love baking! I also love cinnamon buns. :) My favourite recipe is the classic one in The Joy of Cooking—I like mine without icing and with raisins. Cinnamon Buns agrees with me about the icing, but could take or leave the raisins.

We are two people working professionally in live theatre: he’s a technician, and I’m a stage manager. I’m going to rely on my experience as a stage manager to help me plan my wedding! Basically, what a stage manager does is schedule rehearsals, keep everyone on track and on target, make and upkeep all the calendars and lists (props lists, costume lists, etc), and distribute all the information to the appropriate departments. When the show is out of rehearsal, stage managers make sure that actors are in the right place at the right time with the right props. Luckily, I love my job, so I’m loving wedding planning!

Cinnamon Buns and I are planning a wedding that has a theme. The theme is “stuff we love.” We love books, we love theatre, we love geeky nerdy things, we love fun, and we love colours. We are expecting about 65 people at our secular wedding—our friends will probably outnumber our family members, as most of both of our families are in the UK (we’re both first-generation Canadians!). The wedding is in the city where we live (in Canada, if you haven’t noticed all those “extra” u’s in my words), and a lot of our important things (venue, hotel, dress shop) are within walking distance of our house! I’m all about supporting the little guy, so I do a lot of shopping on Etsy, and I’m also an avid crafter myself. I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t making something—I learned it at my mum’s knee, as she ran a craft business out of our house when I was growing up.

Self-portrait taken in San Francisco. My arms are just long enough!

Cinnamon Buns proposed almost exactly five years after we started dating, and our wedding day will be six years and one week after we started dating. As long as we get each other anniversary gifts sometime in that week, we’re golden!

We met at a post-secondary theatre-training program in the Rocky Mountains one summer. I still had four months to go for my theatre degree back on the West Coast after the program ended—so I went back, did what needed to be done, and moved right back out to Alberta to be near him. It makes me slightly sad when people on the coast are out mowing their lawns, and I’m bundled up in a down coat walking to work in -35C (-31F) weather, but I have Cinnamon Buns to keep me warm at home.

I’m looking forward to sharing the whole wedding “thing,” from planning to execution to honeymoon, with the hive—I promise to take photos of all my craft projects, even the prototypes that come out all mangled and not at all like the ones Martha made. I’ve been stalking wedding blogs since long before I was engaged, just for the craft projects! I love that I have people I can talk non-stop wedding to and they’ll never get bored! (I hope!) I’ll be seeking your advice as well; the last time I was in a bridal party I was two, and I’ve been to a grand total of two other weddings since then, the most recent four years ago!

How do you like your cinnamon buns?

Hooray! Welcome, Miss Cinnamon Bun! For the record, I’m not much of a raisin fan, but I’m good with any amount of icing! . . . And now I’m drooling.

Also, with “Lord of the Rings, opera, musicals, baking,” your bio reads quite a bit like mine would. :)

Welcome!! Looking forward to following your planning…we call them “sweet rolls” where I’m from and growing up they were served with chili or beans & wieners for school lunches - don’t knock it till you’ve tried it!

Brrr. Sounds chilly. Good thing you have Mr. Cinnamon Buns to warm you up. Or, ha! “Cinnamon Buns”, eh? Too funny.

I also absolutely adore weddings sprinkled with “geeky, nerdy” things (I just so happen to be a geeky nerd myself!) and cannot wait to see your wedding come together!

Welcome!! And Hooray for theatre people! I’m a former stage manager and my husband is a technical director. I agree that stage management experience comes in handy when planning a wedding!
