Bridal Party

November 8th, 2010 @ 8:38 am by Mrs. Prairie Dog

Let’s just say it: choosing a bridal party is equal parts sucky and joyful.

I’m more of a “small group of close friends” than a “big group of acquaintances” gal. I was thrilled to ask my closest friends to stand next to me…but I am still—STILL—feeling the sting of not being able to include everyone. I’m lucky, though, and every single person has been a gem about it.

I mostly just asked them on the phone, but I did send out three different versions of a card, which said on the inside, “Will you be a bridesmaid?”

All it took is half an hour, Microsoft Publisher, and an unparalleled sense of sophistication—voila! A bridal party.

(Can you believe they let me blog on this site? Other bees bust out heavy machinery and beautiful paper goods, and I give you THOSE monstrosities? Hey, DIY is DIY.)

So you met my matron of honor. My other four attendants are equally beloved and beautiful—two childhood friends and two college roomies. I also have a best man, who I asked in person instead of with a card.

He is also a former roommate, and someone who I knew I’d want to have in our bridal party. At first I figured he’d be a groomsman. His skills will be vital to our dance party formal reception.

But he’s my friend, so it made more sense for him to be on my side, and I’m glad he agreed. He could have said no. I would have understood if he decided he’d feel out of place as the sole dude.

He lives in New York these days. Three of my ladies are in Central Ohio, one in Pittsburgh, and one in St. Louis—all too far away from me!! But now I get to have these five gals and one guy next to me in May, and I couldn’t love them more.

How did it go for you, putting together a bridal party? Was there any drama?

I love your idea! I’m also really excited to see a “bridesman” included in your party. :D

I didn’t have much trouble- I put together “Bridesmaid Survival Kits” for when I asked mine- they included plastic tiaras, chocolate, and mini nerf guns (to ward off wayward men trying to snatch the bride, ho ho!) They LOVED them!

Nice cards! I just called my bridal party and then sent them a card as a thank you/ here are the wedding colors. I totally would have sent out cards like yours if I thought about it :)

Drama would be an understatement. I am very very fortunate that I have an amazing group of girlfriends, but I had absolutely no idea that picking my bridal party would cause so many hurt feelings. People get very emotionally invested in weddings and take things so personally and it is hard. I had 2 girlfriends who were very upset they were not a bridesmaid, and then one bridesmaid who was very upset that she wasn’t the maid of honor… I was not prepared for the drama or how guilty I felt because I had hurt people’s feelings. You summed it up perfectly, “choosing a bridal party is equal parts sucky and joyful.” You couldn’t be more right.

Love the “bridesman”!
I’m afraid I’m going to be in the same boat with my small (but just not small enough!) number of very close friends. Including everyone would be rather ridiculous, but leaving anyone out makes me feel bad. I’m bracing myself for a bit of drama.

sapphire–I love the nerf gun idea!

I love your cards! I haven’t really picked my maids yet . . . I have no idea when that will happen. But I’m fairly certain my requests will look a lot like yours! :)
